A Manuscript Notebook Diary. 1920 - 1929. a single notebook, stiff card wrappers, folio., ( 302 x 205mm), 119pp. full-page closely written pencil manuscript in Sacheverell's hand, mostly daily entries of one or two lines, the first entry for September 10th, 1920, 'Osbert leaves Renishaw for London. (1920)', the final entry for February, 1929 notes, ' Mother comes again about 10 February for a week . . . Zita was married to Arthur James on 29 January', the diary begins at the back of the notebook, leaving the first half of the notebook with blank pages; one of the two entries in ink to the last page reads, 'I close this diary on 18 February, 1929. I finished 'The Gothick North' last week, I got my cheque for it on Saturday, 16 February. I have to see Tom Balston about it, next Wednesday - I began the diary on September 10th 1920, (August 7th 1948!) (December26th 1959), 9 August 1964!)'. Thomas Balston was a partner in Gerald Duckworth & Co., the Sitwell's publisher; A detailed insight into Sacheverell Sitwell's social life, friends, travels, and the early literary achievements of the Sitwell siblings. 'Sachie', as he was known, the youngest of the Sitwell trio, records many overseas trips, sometimes accompanied by his older brother Osbert, and later with his new wife Georgia Sitwell (nee Doble). His travels included visits to his parents at Montegufoni, and sightseeing in Florence, Venice, Rome, Naples, Paris, Berlin, and Dresden. He records the numerous cathedrals, concerts, museums, exhibitions, and galleries visited, and details the architecture he greatly admired. The entries to every page mention 'the Bright Young Things' of the roaring twenties. Sacheverell's friends, to name a few, included Zita Jungman, Olivia Wyndham, Jean Cocteau, Cecil Beaton, Harold Acton, David Tennant, Somerset Maugham, Evelyn Waugh, Gertrude Stein, Rex Whistler, Nancy Mitford, W.B. Yeats, Aldous and Julian Huxley; Life was a whirl for the young up and coming writer, enjoying daily lunches, teas, and suppers at Claridges, the Ritz, the Savoy, Cafe Royal, and the Blue Cockatoo. Sacheverell met Sergei Diaghilev for regular lunches at Kettners, and rarely missed any of his ballet performances, he attended poetry recitals with his sister Edith and Helen Rootham, sat through long rehearsals of Facade, and hosted guests for weekends at home. Sacheverell records family birthdays such as 'Edith's 40th birthday (1887-1927)', and references early literary achievements, 'November 4th, 1926, Edith's book Elegy on Dead Fashion published', and 'Proof of All Summer in a Day arrive, talk of USA.'; a second entry written in ink, (above the entry for February 21st, 1921), notes 'My illness was then (26 xii 1959)'. Sachie's quieter days were spent at Renishaw Hall enjoying local walks, shopping trips to Banbury, or relaxing with Edith and Osbert - until the next party.Provenance: The Sitwell Family Library, Weston Hall. Condition Report: the binding worn, scuffed and split to the front cover and lower spine, the pages of diary entries are bright, clean, and reasonably easy to read, a few pages with fainter pencil. Lot 243

A PAIR OF PAINTED FEATHER COLLAGES 18TH CENTURYEach depicting a basket of flowers, in a mahogany frame52cm x 40cmProvenance:Created by Susanna Jennens (1688-1760)Literature:F. Bamford, 'Weston Hall, Northamptonshire - I: The Home of Sir Sacheverell and Lady Sitwell', Country Life, 22 January 1976, p. 177, fig. 8.Catalogue Note:This pair of painted feather collages is characteristic of the superb craftsmanship of the French-born Nicholas Le Normand (d. 1736), described in 1732 as 'the ingenious Mr Le Normond' [sic], who sold his featherwork pictures through the likes of Mr. Bertrand's Toyshop at Terrace Walk in Bath (V. Brett, 'Nicholas Le Normand's Featherwork', Furniture History Society Newsletter, February 2014, p. 1). Le Normand was celebrated for having sold feather bed hangings to Augustus the Strong, King of Poland, subsequently displayed at the Japanisches Palais in Dresden. An account of this extraordinary bed was given in Le Nouveau Mercure in March 1720, and describes Le Normand's workshop as being in Putney in South West London, and that his London agents were Bosquet & Clerembault (ibid., p. 4). The 'retailer' Mr. Bertrand's Toyshop, selling a wide-ranging stock of trinkets such as gold boxes, watches, seals and more, was part of an intricate familial network of 'toyshop' owners including the Charing Cross shop of Paul Daniel Chenevix, the most fashionable of all, 'patronised and written about by the cream of the aristocracy' (ibid., p. 6). Le Normand was not alone in producing featherwork, in April 1735, the Mercure de France published an article in which a 'Master Levet', a pupil of Le Normand, is discussed. The article goes on to describe the technique, albeit in a very general manner: [The artworks] 'are made in a type of feather material and are neither sown nor stuck but woven on the loom which creates a sort of Tapestry [Cloth], which is not thicker and is as soft as Damask and as strong in order to last; with the advantage that the dust never settles on it, that it always keeps its lustre and its strong bright colours; as only real feathers are used with no additional colouring and the best and most appropriate are only chosen (ibid., p. 8). Mention was made of Mr. Levet having produced a featherwork fire screen of a vase of flowers for the 4th Duke of Leeds. This craft appears to have been taken up by educated women and their female attendants; in 1791, Elizabeth Montagu assisted by a Mrs Pendarves and a Betty Tull completed the feather room at Montagu House, London, an undertaking, which Mrs Montagu first discussed in correspondence in 1737 (ibid., p. 9). The fashion for featherwork continued into the 19th century; in volume II of Cassell's Household Guide (1875), an article deals with the craft of making feather flowers as a winter pastime for ladies.

ALEXANDER IGNATIUS ROCHE RSA NEAC RP (SCOTTISH 1863 - 1921), THE WALK TO THE RIVER oil on canvas, signed image size 63cm x 75cm, overall size 87cm x 99cm Framed. Note: Born at Gallowgate in Glasgow on 17th August 1861, the son of a milliner, Alexander Roche was schooled at St Mungo’s Academy and then attended classes at the Glasgow School of Art while working in an architect's office. His real art training came in Paris, where he studied for several years from 1881, under Boulanger and Lefebvre at Julien’s and later under Gérome at l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts. While in Paris he met and befriended several other Scottish students including William Kennedy, (Sir) John Lavery and Thomas Millie Dow, along with Dow’s mentor, William Stott of Oldham. Together they painted at Grez-Sur-Loing, just south of Fontainebleau, all influenced by Bastien-Lepage (1848-84) and the plein-airistes. In 1885 Roche returned to Glasgow where he painted a number of romantic idylls of girls in gardens, interiors or in landscape, such as The Dominie’s (schoolmaster) Favourites exhibited at the Glasgow Institute in 1885, No. 591, which was priced at the great sum of £250 and The Shepherdess (exhibited to acclaim at the RA 1890). He moved to a cottage on the banks of the Luggie in Dunbartonshire and there some of his best landscapes were painted. Most of 1888 was spent in Capri, where he was associated with a cosmopolitan group of artists including Fabio Fabbi and Harold Speed. Two further trips to Italy followed, to Florence and Venice, in the early 1890s when he painted peasants in the Sabine Hills. In Florence, he met and married an Italian girl, but the marriage was not to last. In 1896 Roche moved to Edinburgh and began to paint portraits and figure studies. His sense of colour and confident brushwork were well suited to portraiture and in his later years this became his main output and source of income. He spent some time in the USA, fulfilling portrait commissions and seeking others. Among his lucrative commissions was a group portrait for Andrew Carnegie, then the world’s richest man, of his wife Louise (nee Whitfield) and their daughter, Margaret. He won a gold medal at Munich 1891, an Hon. Mention at the Paris Salon 1892 and a gold medal at Dresden 1897. Elected ARSA 1894 and RSA 1900, he exhibited at the RSA from 1887 - 1976 and at the RA from 1890 - 1919. Roche was considered a member of the Glasgow School, but after the late 1880s he drifted to the fringes of the movement. In 1906, he remarried, to Jean, daughter of the animal painter Robert Alexander and sister of Edwin, the flower and animal painter. All four shared a friendship with Joseph Crawhall, together with a love of Tangier. They lived from 1907 until the outbreak of the Great War at 8 Royal Terrace in Edinburgh, a very prestigious Edinburgh address reflecting his considerable commercial success. Around this time he was struck with a cerebral haemorrhage which paralysed his right hand. He taught himself to paint with his left and was later to produce some exceptional landscapes. The Roches later bought a house, Hailes Cottage in the village of Slateford, by the Water of Leith, to the southwest of Edinburgh, where he died, on 10th March 1921, aged 59. UK public collections hold forty examples of his work including at Glasgow Museums & Galleries, The National Galleries of Scotland, The Fleming Collection, The Kelvingrove, The Hunterian, Edinburgh, Kirkcaldy, Stirling The Royal Scottish Academy and The Walker Art Gallery.
