Alice E*** Arthur (c.1885-after 1940) FLOWERS IN A VASE signed watercolour 36 x 26cms; 14 1/4 x 10 1/4in. NB: Landscape and flower painter in watercolour, Arthur was born in Newcastle, the daughter of a pharmacist. Details of her early artistic education are not known, but by the age of about twenty, she began exhibiting her work at the Artists of the Northern Counties Exhibitions at the Laing Art Gallery. She remained a regular exhibitor at the exhibitions for some thirty years and died sometime after 1940 at Newcastle.
Ralph Hedley, RBA (1848-1913) "ARS LONGA VITA BREVIS"-AN ELDERLY ARTIST WORKING AT HIS EASEL signed and dated 1901 pen and ink 14.5 x 13.5cms; 5 3/4 x 5 1/4in. Richard Demarco, HRSA (1930-) "LOBSTER POTS AND HARBOUR, CôTES DU NORD" signed and dated 1965; with inscriptions on gallery labels verso watercolour, gouache and graphite 38 x 50.5cms; 15 x 19 3/4in. PROVENANCE: Aitken Dott & Son, Edinburgh. EXHIBITED: Traverse Theatre Club Art Gallery Edinburgh, Festival Exhibition 1965: City of Bradford Art Gallery, Cartwright Memorial Hall 1965. NB: Edinburgh-born Richard Demarco`s reputation is principally based on his career as an exhibition and theatre director, begun when he helped found the Traverse Theatre in the city in 1963. Since then he has been one of Scotland`s most influential advocates for contemporary art through his work at the Richard Demarco Gallery and the Demarco European Art Foundation, as well as his professorship at Kingston University in London. Mr. Demarco`s contribution to contemporary art internationally has been recognised on numerous occasions, receiving the Polish Gold Order of Merit, the Cavaliere della Republica d`Italia, the Chevalier des Arts et Lettres de France, and the C.B.E. The National Library of Scotland, the National Galleries of Scotland and Creative Scotland are currently working with Mr. Demarco, Edinburgh College of Art and the Scottish Government, to advise on a secure future for the Demarco Collection and Archive-an extensive of works of art, documents, photographs-currently housed at Craigcrook Castle in Edinburgh. The Artist celebrates his 80th birthday this year.
T. Dan (Thomas Daniel) Smith (1915-1993) A RIVER SCENE WITH THREE CABIN CRUISERS signed with initials and dated `76 oil on board 30 x 45.5cms; 11 3/4 x 16in. NB: T. Dan Smith was leader of Newcastle upon Tyne City Council from 1960-1965. While leading the redevelopment of the City, Smith formed business links with architect John Poulson which led to his trial in April 1974 for accepting bribes. He was sentenced to six years imprisonment during which period he became interested in art and amateur dramatics. This painting was executed during his imprisonment and later gifted to the present vendor. Smith was released from Leyhill Open Prison in 1977.

A late nineteenth century bracelet, composed of eight flower heads surmounted on a quatrefoil ground and spaced by two oblong links. "Marked "AHK 830 S"; a late 19th Century amethyst and silver pendant, the oval mixed-cut amethyst collet set within a pierced scroll work surmount suspending a pear-cut amethyst drop; three Art Nouveau silver buttons, depicting a female head; a silver and enamel brooch, the raised and pierced central boss set with pale blue enamel decorations with pierced scroll work terminals, suspending an oval link chain with three blue and white enamel flowerheads and tapering blue enamel drop. Stamped "830S"; a late 19th Century enamel and silver pendant, the stylised mount set with light and mid blue enamel suspending an enamelled drop on silver chain with two enamelled spacers. (AF); and a silver and enamel bracelet, composed of ten marquise shaped blue guilloche enamel plaques spaced by pierced flowerheads. (AF). (8)
