The late Roger Moss was a renowned art collector who, throughout the years, thanks to his determination and enthusiasm, was able to create an outstanding collection of artworks, most prominently from China and the Orient, but also from other cultures.

Modelled in the round; the horse in advancing pose with one foreleg raised, copious mane; the female rider with upright posture, wearing an ankle-length coral-coloured robe with long bell sleeves, scooped shoulder panels and raised collar, hair piled in an elaborate bun; remains of pigment to the hair and footwear, face and other details. Cf. Tang Dynasty female rider in less elaborate costume in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, under accession no. 51.93a, b.3.4 kg, 49.5 cm (19 1/2 in.). Framed and glazed with polychrome embellishment; from a Diwan by Hafez, comprising two vertical columns of handwritten script, panels of floral ornament and concentric borders; explanatory label to reverse. 293 grams, 22.3 x 17.4 cm (8 3/4 x 6 3/4 in.). Acquired by the vendor's father on the UK art market, before 1990. Hafez was the most famous of the Islamic Sufi poets. This manuscript was evidently owned by a distinguished and affluent individual.
