18th century AD. A hand-painted miniature scene depicting a winged female holding up the sun, riding on a lion formed as a combination of beasts and divine (?) figures; mounted in a card frame with waxed paper cover. 64 grams, 35.5 x 28cm in mount, image: 22.5 x 14cm (14 x 11 in mount"). Acquired on the London art market before 1995. This miniature actually represents Sol in Leo, the conjunction of the sun with the constellation Leo. What is unusual, however, is that the lion is a composite drawing, or symplegma, made up of many intertwined animals, human beings, and monsters.
