* JOHN CUNNINGHAM RGI D Litt (SCOTTISH 1926 - 1998), SEASCAPE, ARDNAMURCHAN oil on linen, signed, further signed and titled verso 40cm x 80cm Framed and under glass. Label verso: The Macaulay Gallery, Stenton, East Lothian. Provenance: Private Scottish collection. Note: The artist's long obituary in The Glasgow Herald in 1998 began "Dr John Cunningham's death at the age of 72 robs Glasgow of one of its most endearing, well-known and colourful art-world stalwarts". Born in Lanarkshire in 1926, Cunningham attended Glasgow School of Art (GSA) in 1953. From 1967 to 1985, he was a Senior Lecturer at GSA, thus having close contact with several generations of young painters for two decades. John lived in a magnificent and spacious studio flat in the centre of Glasgow which was designed by Sir John Burnett expressly for the use of an artist, and which had previously been owned by other artists including John McGhie and David Gauld. The vision of his paintings was an expression of the man. John Cunningham was a large, charismatic character who loved life abundantly and whose paintings reflected his joy and passion for colour, displaying bold, confident brush-strokes along with subtle sensitivity. His landscapes and seascapes were all painted outdoors with only a few minor touches to be added in the studio. This gives his work a wonderful freshness and vitality with the immediacy of the moment captured. By going to the places, soaking up the vision and perspectives of the people who lived in those places, and painting the vision with a professional attention to its subtleties and variations, he produced a unique body of work. His landscapes are typified by a sense of connection to the earth itself, an honesty about the places depicted – nothing is sentimentalized or diminished – and a lavish generosity of engagement with colour, tone, shade and light. In 1980 he was elected to the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts (RGI) and in 1990 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Strathclyde. He received numerous prestigious awards during his long career. He exhibited throughout the UK also in New York and Hong Kong, and his work is in many public, corporate and private collections.

* LILIAN NEILSON (BRITISH 1938 - 1998), FISHING NETS oil on board, signed 45cm x 55cm Framed. Note: Lil Neilson was a member of the quartet who became known as 'The Catterline School' along with Joan Eardley, Annette Stephen and Angus Neil. Lil Neilson studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art from 1956-60, including a summer school at Hospitalfield House, Arbroath. She completed a post-diploma year tutored by Hugh Crawford and Alberto Morroco in 1960-61 and was awarded a travelling scholarship to France and Italy in 1961-62. On her return she joined Joan Eardley in Catterline: they had become friends in 1960 at Hospitalfield House and Eardley invited Lil to paint in the studio she and Annette Stephen shared in Catterline. Like many other painters and visitors, Lil became enthralled with the place. At this time Lil also worked backstage with Reet Guenigault in theatres including the Traverse in Edinburgh and also in England, returning to Catterline to nurse Eardley when her illness was diagnosed in the new year of 1963. Reet joined them three months later to take over and give Lil a rest, and after Eardley's death in August of that year Lil bought No 2 South Side, Catterline, to make her home in one half and studio at the other end. Some pictures of this period show Catterline views which Eardley famously painted, especially with the great round moons low in the summer sky. Neilson's foregrounds are less detailed and the viewer's eyes are led upwards towards the sky. Lil continued to work in theatres until 1969, when she returned to Catterline to try to work through the Eardley influences which had been made more than a bitter cup. She felt that she must paint that problem out in Catterline. She spent some time in Norfolk with Gaydon Phillips, but not many paintings of Norfolk exist and she returned to paint in Catterline regularly over the next nine years. She moved permanently to Catterline in 1986 and, once there, Joyce Laing's Pittenweem gallery exhibited some of Lil's work which showed new directions. In 1989, at the influential 369 Gallery, Edinburgh, an exhibition shared with Annette Stephen showed a two-room retrospective of Lil's work. Her last show was 'Certain Days and Other Seasons' (1997) at both Seagate and Aberdeen Art Galleries. Lil pronounced this to be ''the end of my life's work'', prophetically as it turned out, for by August 1997 it became apparent that this private and reticent woman had been working under duress for the past two years as the extent of her disease was discovered. Lil's good friends and neighbours loved and nursed her, enabling her to be in her beloved Catterline until she needed the services of Roxburgh House.
* AVRIL PATON (SCOTTISH b 1941), TOPPING OUT DAY (c1995) watercolour on paper 80cm x 100cm Framed and under glass. Label verso: Gatehouse Gallery, Rouken Glen Road, Giffnock, where acquired by the vendor. Note: a remarkably rare work by Avril Paton, the artist who painted "Windows in the West", one of Scotland's best known and most popular contemporary paintings which was acquired for the nation by the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and is currently on display at Kelvingrove Gallery, Glasgow. There has been much written about Paton's work from the 1990's explaining the meticulous detail and the many months it took to complete a single picture. Paton eventually moved on to a more spontaneous abstract style of work and consequently her paintings from the 1990's are a distinct isolated body of work and the examples from this time are few and rarely, if ever, appear at auction. Avril Paton's work from this period has been studied as part of the curriculum for many of the nation's youth and there are talks and discussions on YouTube which include "Topping Out Day". Private collection, England.

* WALTER LANGHAMMER (AUSTRIAN 1905 - 1977), STILL LIFE WITH INDIAN VASE oil on canvas, signed 40cm x 61cm Framed Note: Born in Austria. Left Austria during Nazi occupation of World War II. He was a contemporary of the famous painter Oskar Kokoschka, and was professor of the Academy in Vienna in the 1930s. After fleeing Austria Langhammer spent some time in London where he painted many images of city scapes and travel (carriage) posters for British rail. After moving to India, Langhammer was appointed as the first art director of the Times of India, and later the Chairman of Bombay Art Society. He played a matchless part in bringing art patrons and artists together, and a seminal role in the founding of the Progressive Arts Group. Langhammer would often say, he saw a future in the modern art movement – he felt it was all over Europe. So people like Ara, Raza, Husain, Souza and Raiba, the great names of the Indian Progressive Art Movement, became his students. Every Sunday, it was open house at his studio on Napean Sea Road. Langhammer inspired a generation of artists who then went on to propel Indian Art onto the international forum. Artists like Almelkar, Husain and Razza have candidly admitted to having drawn inspiration from him. His work is widely collected over several continents today.
