Six Chinese blue and white 'acupuncture' saucers, KangxiDia.: 11 cm Erotic art is an eminent part of the cultural heritage of ancient China, and was already flourishing in pre-Imperial times. With its peak during the late-Ming period, this art remained a fixed feature in Chinese literature and visual arts until well into the 20th century. Chinese erotic art is a search for beauty in all its mani festations, for not only does it offer stimulation, it provides source of great aesthetic pleasure. It never presents sex in a crude or pornographical way, but within a framework of beauty and harmony, enhanced with details of a profound or symbolic nature.

A rare set of ten Chinese famille rose 'erotic' nesting bowls, Daoguang mark and of the period Dia.: 11 cm (the largest) Dia.: 4,5 cm (the smallest) Erotic art is an eminent part of the cultural heritage of ancient China, and was already flourishing in pre-Imperial times. With its peak during the late-Ming period, this art remained a fixed feature in Chinese literature and visual arts until well into the 20th century. Chinese erotic art is a search for beauty in all its manifestations, for not only does it offer stimulation, it provides a source of great aesthetic pleasure. It never presents sex in a crude or pornographical way, but within a framework of beauty and harmony, enhanced with details of a profound or symbolic nature.

A rare Chinese rose-grisaille cup and saucer after 'Actors of the Comedie-Francaise' by Watteau, Yongzheng/Qianlong Dia.: 7,3 cm - H.: 3,9 cm (the cup) Dia.: 11,7 cm (the saucer) Provenance: - A Belgian private collection. - Acquired from an American private collection in the region of Portland, Oregon.Ref.: - The State Hermitage Museum, inventory number ГÐ-1131, for the original painting 'Les Acteurs de la Come;die-Française' also known as 'Coquettes qui pour voir' or 'La Mascarade' by the French painter Jean Antoine Watteau (1684-1721), painted in 1711-1712. By the mid-18th C., the work belonged to Louis Antoine Crozat (1699-1770), Baron de Thiers, the younger brother of the Parisian merchant and art collector Pierre Crozat. It was acquired in 1772 for Empress Catherine II of Russia and has since been among the Russian imperial collections in the Hermitage and the Gatchina Palace. Now part of the museum's permanent exhibition, it remains on display in the Winter Palace. (link) (see reference image 7) - The National Library of Spain, inventory number bdh0000144141, for the engraving by Henri Simon Thomassin (1688-1741), which probably served as the example for a smaller version as explained below. (link) (see reference image 8) - The National Academy of Lincei, Italy, inventory number S-FC53606, for a small version by an unknown publisher, which was likely sent to China where it served as the source for the design of this tea service. It was a common practice for European merchants to send small versions of large engravings (mostly after important paintings) to the Chinese workshops, to have them reproduced on porcelain. (link) (see reference image 9) - A single cup of this service is in the Lurie collection. Given the rarity of this design we can assume that only one service was ordered and/or made it back to Europe. It was likely a French command, possibly from the entourage of the brothers Pierre and Louis Antoine Crozat. Pierre was one of the principal advisors to Philippe II, Duke of Orle;ans, and it was only after his death in 1740 that his collection passed to his younger brother, Louis Antoine, Baron de Thiers. After his death in 1770, the work found its permanent home in Russia through a sale brokered by the famous philosopher Denis Diderot, a prominent figure during the Age of Enlightenment. A pair of fine Chinese famille rose trembleuse stands or 'mancerina' for the Spanish or Mexican market, Qianlong L.: 22 cm - H.: 4 cmRef.: - Christie's, The Tibor Collection, New York, April 10, 2019, for a nearly identical pair. (sold USD 5.000) (link) The accompanying text states: The mancerina is closely associated with the Hispanic market and with the Spanish custom of chocolate drinking. Both chocolate and silver of course came from the Spanish New World, so it is fitting that this form was often made in silver as well as in Spanish maiolica. It is said that the 2nd Marque;s de Mancera, Viceroy of New Spain 1664-1673, had a palsied hand and thus needed the all-in-one cupstand, which took his name, though none survive from this early period. Interestingly, a very similar form exists in Chinese ceramics of the Song period, which may have influenced the development of the export examples. For a Mexican silver mancerina see H.R. Borrell et al, The Grandeur of Viceregal Mexico, p. 380. An almost identical single export mancerina is in the Museo Nacional de Historia, Mexico City, and illustrated by M. (link) The accompanying text by Jorge Rivas Perez states: This large Chinese famille rose mancerina decorated with flowers is a specialized item found in chocolate services. The mancerina is a deep, wide saucer, often in the shape of a seashell, with a cup holder in the centre to hold the jícara (chocolate cup) in place and prevent it from tipping over. It was invented in Mexico in the mid-1600s and named after Don Antonio Sebastian alvarez de Toledo Molina y Salazar, 2nd Marquis of Mancera, and Grandee of Spain (c. 1608 - 1715), a Spanish nobleman who was Viceroy of New Spain (Mexico) from 1664 to 1673. Mancerinas became very fashionable across the Spanish empire during the colonial period and were manufactured in both silver and ceramic. In the 18th C., thanks to the trade with Asia via the Manila Galleon, porcelain mancerinas were also produced in China for the Mexican market. This example, a Qianlong period (1736-1795) famille rose mancerina decorated with flowers from circa 1760-70, is representative type of the Asian export wares for the Spanish market.

The pug dog is usually seated on the base. Only two other examples are recorded with the pug on the table: in the Maurice de Rothschild collection, sold at Christie's London, 28 March 1977, lot 127; and another, sold at Sotheby's Geneva, 10 May 1988, lot 42, and again at Sotheby's London, 25 October 2016, lot 597. Other recorded examples of this rare group are in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Irwin Untermyer Collection, acc. no. 64.101.62; in the Kunstgewerbemuseum, Berlin (formerly in the collections of Walter von Pannwitz and Hermine Feist), published by S. Catholics were forbidden from joining by a papal bull issued by Pope Clement XII in 1738. In response, the pseudo-Masonic Order of the Pug Dog (Mopsorden) was established, which copied masonic rituals, but – unlike the Freemasons – allowed women to join. The pug dog, the fashionable lapdog of the time, was adopted as a symbol of the order, which resulted in the production of numerous courtly figures and groups with pugs, as well as models of the dogs themselves, at the Meissen manufactory. The 'Gelber Löwe' pattern was first produced at Meissen after a Japanese porcelain original as part of the large order placed by the Paris merchant, Rudolph Lemaire, for copies of Asian porcelain. A large quantity of plates and dishes painted in this style were among the porcelain confiscated in April 1731 in the house of Lemaire's accomplice at the Dresden court, Count von Hoym, and subsequently sent to the Japanese Palace and entered in the inventory under no. 8.
