Ronald Gray NEAC (1868–1951) 'Tea in the Studio' signed and titled on artist's original label to the reverse with address of '15 Avenue Studios, 76 Fulham Road' oil on canvas 70 x 90cm Provenance: The Fine Art Society Exhibited: British Empire Exhibition, 1925 New English Art Club, 1947 It is likely that this work depicts a scene within an artist's studio at 76 Fulham Road, perhaps Ronald Gray's own, and probable that the figure holding the palette is Gray himself. The Avenue Studios consisted of a number artists' and sculptors' studios in use from the late 19th century which continued to be used for their original purpose until the 1980s. The two paintings hanging within the present picture can be identified as 'My Mother', 1908, by Ronald Gray and 'Oreads' by Annie Louisa Swynnerton. 'Oreads' was purchased by John Singer Sargent, who himself had a Fulham Road studio, as did Swynnerton. Both works are now in Tate Britain (N04098 and N03619). The painting is executed in oil on a canvas support. The painting is unlined and the canvas tension is slightly slack with a few minor undulations, but generally in plane. The paint layers are in a very good condition overall. In localised areas drying cracks have formed revealing the lighter ground layer below. The varnish is yellowed and a little patchy and uneven but generally acceptable.90 x 111cm framed

Samuel Hieronymus Grimm (1733-1794) A street in Dieppe, Francesigned and dated lower centre 'S. H. Grimm fecit 1771'pen, ink and watercolour27 x 36cmBorn in Switzerland, Grimm, settled in Paris in 1765 to study in the studio of Jean-Georges Wille. He remained there for three years before moving to London. During his time with Wille, Grimm undertook several sketching tours including possibly to Dieppe, as well as travelling to England from Dieppe. The present watercolour which appears to show a street in the area of Dieppe known as Le Pollet, with the Château de Dieppe in the distance, was probably based on on-the-spot sketches made by the artist. Grimm often worked in small sketchbooks and these studies were then used as an aid-memoire whilst working up his finished studio watercolours. As with the present work, he would sometimes return to these sketchbooks years later. There is another watercolour of a street in Dieppe in the Laing Art Gallery, dated 1770.

The company had the best optical and camera equipment and were technically the best print makers in the world. Germany had been the cradle of the art of engraving and Berlin photogravures were highly prized in Britain. This book was originally owned by Annie Pearson, Viscountess Cowdray, GBE (née Cass, 1860-1932), who was an English society hostess, suffragist and philanthropist. She was nicknamed the "Fairy Godmother of Nursing" for her patronage of the Royal College of Nursing and her work to promote district nursing throughout England and Scotland. She served as the President of the Women's Liberal Federation from 1921 until 1923 and was also the Honorary Treasurer of the Liberal Women's Suffrage Union. She was painted by both Sargent and Orpen. She and her husband, Viscount Cowdray, an engineer and oil magnate, donated Cowdray Hall to the city of Aberdeen.

After Anthony Augustus Frederick Sandys A Nightmarezincotype published by Smith, Elder & Co., May 4th 185748.5 x 51cmProvenance:The Maas Gallery Ltd, LondonSandys' famous satire of the Pre-Raphaelites is based upon Millais' 1857 Royal Academy painting, A Dream of the Past: Sir Isumbras at the Ford. According to Elizabeth Pennell, who interviewed Sandys nearly forty years later, this print was produced 'five days after the Academy opened ... three hundred were sold in the first week and then the man disappeared with the plate and has never been heard of since'. Six months after it had been published, to general amusement and acclaim in the art world, Sandys admitted having drawn it to Rossetti, who promptly invited him to dinner after which they became firm friends. Millais is the Knight, with Rossetti on the pillion and Hunt behind, seated on a braying ass bearing the initials 'JR' for John Ruskin.

Lot 148

George Romney (1734-1802) Four studies of a seated and reclining woman the reverse with two further studiespen and brown ink, unframed11 x 18.5cmThe present sheet bears some similarities to Romney’s exploration of Serena, the heroine of a popular poem The Triumph of Temper, by the artist’s friend and biographer, William Hayley, published in 1781. The sentimental nature of the poem with the heroine’s unfailing good humour and kindness, overcoming tribulations and finding happiness in marriage, found enormous appeal, especially among female readers. There are several paintings exploring this theme, including one in the Harris Museum and Art Gallery, as well as versions in private collections, which show Serena quietly reading. A further painting, sold at Christie’s in 1966 and titled Serena in the Boat of Apathy, depicts a reclining Serena in classical costume (see Alex Kidson, George Romney 1734-1802, 2002, fig. 49).
