A RARE AND EXTREMELY LARGE PAIR OF MOULDED FAMILLE ROSE 'WU SHUANG PU' VASESLate Qing DynastyEach vase of baluster form and decorated in mirror image, the body of each finely moulded and painted with the four historical figures Liu Chen, An Min, Dong Fangshou and Yue Fei, the shoulders moulded with the Hehe twins on one side, and the Star Gods Cai and Zi, all against a yellow sgraffito ground set with flowering stems, the shoulders set with elephant head handles suspending a fixed ring, stylised lappets around the foot, the rim with a key-scroll band above a pendent ruyi head border.124cm (48 3/4in) high (2).Footnotes:清晚期 粉彩模印無雙譜人物圖瓶 一對Vases of this massive scale were first produced in the late 17th and 18th Centuries for export to the West where they graced the doorways of European palaces and stately homes. At the time they were typically referred to as 'soldier' or 'dragoon' vases, a name thought to derive from a historical incident in 1717 when Augustus the Strong of Saxony is said to have traded 600 cavalrymen, known as dragoons, for a collection of 150 Chinese porcelain vases in negotiations with Frederick the Great of Prussia. It is therefore fitting that the famous general Yue Fei (1103-1142) has been selected for inclusion on the body of these 'soldier' vases, along with Liu Chen (220-265), prince of Beidi also depicted in military garb. The other two figures are the official and courier of Emperor Wu Dong Fangshuo (154-93 BC) and stone mason An Min (1050-1125).The figures are taken from the Wu shuang pu compiled by Jin Guliang during the mid-17th century. The manual describes forty peerless heroes from the Han to Song dynasties. The descriptive texts reproduced over the body of the vase are also taken from the woodblock printed manual. The text became a popular source of inspiration for famille rose porcelain of the late Qing period. Vases of the subject on this scale are known, for example, a pair of vases 131cm high depicting scenes from Wu Shuang pu was sold Bonhams Knightsbridge, Asian Art, 9 May 2022, lot 152. However, the moulded detail and craftsmanship of the present vase ranks high above other known examples of the subject. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

AN IRON RED AND GILT DECORATED POWDER BLUE GROUND BOTTLE VASE19th centuryDecorated with a descending serpentine dragon facing a carp leaping from foaming waves, hardwood stand. 45cm (17 3/4in) high. (2).Footnotes:十九世紀 礬紅彩描金灑藍地長頸瓶The following sixty lots celebrate the creative invention employed by Chinese artists and artisans in the depiction of the animal kingdom. From the solemn majesty of an Imperial dragon to the quiet grace of a domestic cat, animals are everywhere in Chinese art. They are embroidered into robes, painted onto porcelain vases and carved into wooden brush pots. Although they are often considered as decorative elements, they also have meanings in their own rights. The twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac are each considered to embody certain human characteristics with a different animal for each year following a twelve month cycle. The pronunciation of other animals form rebuses with traditional sayings which confer auspicious associations with events or themes, such as quails' association with the new year and elephants' association with peaceful times. The five-clawed dragon and phoenix are symbols of the Chinese Emperor and Empress and ubiquitous in Imperial Chinese art. For officials of lower ranks, rectangular badges sewn into their garments depict specific animals, each denoting their status. The works provide a journey through a range of media across several thousand years of Chinese history at times personifying human feeling and at others helping connect collectors and connoisseurs to the natural world. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

(2).Footnotes:清乾隆 鎏金花盆 一對This brilliantly gilded and elaborately decorated pair of jardinières is a testament to the artistic and cultural exchange between China and Europe in the eighteenth century. The paste-inset floral heads and Rococo-inspired scroll show the extent to which Chinese craftsmen in both the Imperial palace and Guangzhou quickly embraced and emulated Western techniques on Chinese art for the Imperial court.Such works received the direct patronage of the Qianlong Emperor who commissioned Chinese and Western artisans to work together to create highly decorative pieces to display Imperial supremacy and grandeur. During the mid-18th century European Jesuit artists were employed at the court to design the palaces in the northern part of the Yuanming Yuan. Meher Afroz (Pakistani b. 1948), Untitled, crowns from the Pindaar series, mixed media on board, circa 2003, 40 x 40cm.Provenance: bought by the vendor from the Pindaar show held at the Chawkandi Art Gallery in January 2005, in Karachi, Pakistan. Afroz Mehar was born in 1948 in Lucknow, India, and has studied at the Government College of Arts and Crafts where she graduated with honours in 1971, before moving to Karachi, Pakistan. Pindaar means 'arrogance' in the her native Urdu language. Contextualized in a post 9/11 world enveloped in unrelenting violence, this work is a reflection on a historical moment.Afroz is widely regarded as a master of both media and persists in bringing them together through her interest in ageing her surfaces to connote the passage of time and the resultant accumulation of experience. Similarly, the work on offer is built in successive layers of marks, which serve as a camouflage to the plasticity of acrylics. The iconography is typical for Afroz - bearded men, stars, celestial bodies, light bulbs, floating buildings, are only part of the mystical symbols dominating her works. In an article by The Herald from February 2005, Afroz explained herself as pontificating the vices of ego and her own yearning for sufistic self-annihilation on the other.Today, Afroz lives in Karachi where she is a senior faculty member at the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture, along with being a founder member of ASNA, a non-commercial organization dedicated to the Exhibition and documentation of Arts and Crafts Pakistan.
