Thomas Koether (New York, Florida, Europe, Australia, b. 1940) Abstract Painting. Titled: "Virtual Interior / Mirror Matrix" Dated: '93 Oil on Board. Signed and dated verso. Overall Size: 15.25 x 23.25 in. (149 - 4323) In 1960, Koether was accepted to the school of the Art Institute of Chicago at age 20. In 1963 Koether Moved to New York City and started going to the Art Students League. In June of 1966 he graduated with honors from N.Y.U. and was accepted to the N.Y.U. graduate school of Communications Arts in Cinematography under Haig Manoogian. In 1970, he moved to Paris to take a studio space at the American Center on Boulevard Raspail. In July of ’71 Koether went to Italy and did a lot of drawing and watercolors. In Florence he met Italian art restorers and learned a lot about restoration from them. That same year, he participated in a group show at the American Center and sold several pieces – one to director Henry Pillsbury. The work from Ibiza and Paris dealt with attempts to delineate abstraction as a form with his own experience of his own abstractness – landscapes and still-lives of his own psychic and emotional space. This work has a post-psychedelic aspect. In 1974 Koether moved back to New York and worked in N.Y.C. as an art restorer with Roger Ricco Associates. That year, he had a one man show at Ajanta Gallery on East 9th Street. In 1976, Koether moved to Australia and established an art conservation business and worked on the 5 major collections of Oceanic art in Australia. Jesus Rafael Soto (Venezuelan, 1923 - 2005) Titled: "Cuadrado y Curvas Virtuales", 1979 from Sintesis series. Signed "Soto" on a label affixed to the reverse. Numbered: (14/110) Medium: Silkscreen on Plexiglas with metal rods. Jesus Rafael Soto was born in Ciudad Bolivar and studied at the School of Visual and Applied Arts in Caracas. During this period he became acquainted with Los Disidentes, a group of artists that included Alejandro Otero and Carlos Cruz-Diez. In addition to his fellow compatriots, Soto's work was influenced by Kazimir Malevich and Piet Mondrian. The main artistic tenets evinced in Soto's works are pure abstraction, vibrations, progressions and geometric rigor. They can be seen through the use of lines and superimposed squares in his sculptures, made with paint and a series of industrial and synthetic materials. He spent much time in Europe, becoming a key member of the Group Zero movement, which included such artists as Lucio Fontana, Gunther Uecker and Yves Klein. As a result, Soto's work also incorporates modernist concepts such as light, time, movement, color manipulation and space. All of these facets place him as an important figure within the Kinetic and Op Art movements. Dimensions: 19.25 x 19.25 x 4 7/8 in. (48.9 x 48.9 x 12.4 cm)
Howard Koslow (American, 1924 - 2016) "The Art of Picasso" Signed lower right. Original Acrylic painting on Canvasboard. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood Mint Stamps of the World Collectors Panel for the Spain Art of Picasso stamps issued December 1, 1987. Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) was the most famous painter of the 1900's. In many ways, he was the artist most characteristic of this century, because he responded to changing conditions, moods and challenges so intensely and rapidly. He created about twenty thousand works in more than eighty years of his life, and these works were executed in a multiplicity of styles. Any effort to explain his work earned the contempt of Picasso. "Why does one love the night ... without trying to understand it? If only people would realize that an artist himself is only a trifling bit of the world ... and that no more importance should be attached to him than to plenty of other things which please us in the world, though we can't explain them. Everyone wants to understand art ... Why not try to understand the songs of a bird?" Image Size: 20.75 x 16.75 in. Overall Size: 26.25 x 22 in. Unframed. (B11168)
Ivan Kozlov (Russian, B. 1937) "Red-Crested Pochard" Signed and dated ('90) lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on a First Day Cover for a Russia Duck stamp issued July 1, 1990. The Red-crested Pochard is a good-looking European duck, about the same size as the Mallard. Like all diving ducks, the Red-crested Pochard prefers to be out in the middle of its home waters and therefore is very easy to observe, though sometimes only through field glasses at great distances. In fact, this duck is now found solely on large, open expanses of water and will approach the banks only at nesting time, when it searches for the camouflaging thickets of reeds where it hides its nest. The handsome drake can be recognized by its vivid orangish-red bill and big red head, black chest and brown wings with orange and white markings. The plump brown hen sports crisp white cheek patches. This waterfowl breeds extensively in Eurasia and its playful courtship antics delight duck enthusiasts in the USSR, making this bird the perfect choice to grace a Soviet postage stamp. Ivan Koslov's beautiful stamp design and handsome cachet art faithfully record the essence of this lively bird. The cachet features a mated pair of Red-crested Pochards descending toward the marshy banks of their Soviet lake habitat. These birds' powerful wings are a focal point of the picture and the hen's legs, extended for a landing, are clearly set far back on her body, attesting to the fact that the Red-crest is a diving duck. The position of the legs makes the duck awkward on land, but contributes greatly to its maneuverability under the water. Image Size: 6.75 x 5.75 in. Overall Size: 9.75 x 7.75 in. Unframed. (B12461)

Carlos Bastos (Brazil, 1925-2004) Large 1964 painting of figures with spears and canoes. Signed and dated lower right. Oil on canvas. Bastos studied fine arts in Salvador and then in Rio de Janeiro. He also studied art in New York and Paris (1957-1958) He belonged to a group of artists that included Jorge Amado (also from Bahia) (1912-2001), whose books Bastos illustrated, and Mario Cravo Carybe (accent on the last "e"), another well-known Bahian artist (muralist). Their art group had a strong impact on the art scene of the 1940s and 1950s, creating the illusion of sensuality, miscegenation, and Africanness, all still characteristic of Bahian culture. The works of these artists are internationally known. Carlos Bastos was one of the top three muralists of Brazil. His subjects were innocent and playful. He was somewhat influenced by Surrealism. His art was innovative and revolutionized the arts in Brazil. Sight Size: 31.5 x 51 in. Overall Framed Size: 35 x 54 in.
