Historically Important Archive of Signatures and Photographs of Nuremberg War Trials Interest, Collected by a US Intelligence Officer in 1945, the archive which is held in a period album titled “NAZI CAVALCADE”. The album contains the signatures and in some cases the original prison “mug shot” photographs of nearly all the leading Nazi personalities that stood trial and helped give evidence during the International Military Tribunal / War Crimes Trials in Nuremberg. Each document has typed name and most have a description of the defendants activities during the War, on the document in most cases is a signature but some has a small two or three line statement above the signature. The description under Hermann Goering’s signature reads, “Leader of Richthofen Squadron in World War I, Director of the FOUR YEAR PLAN. Looter of priceless European Art Treasures, Nazi “Glamour Boy”, Designer of Uniforms, Drug addict, on trial in Nuremberg on all four counts of the indictment”. These documents were to authenticate the signatures of the defendants and in some cases prove their hand writing, this allowing the intelligence officers to prove if the defendant was involved in atrocities from original captured documents. Defendants are entered mostly in alphabetical order with two to a page, these range from high ranking military officers, political leaders, diplomats, factory owners and heads of institutions like banks. In total the album consists of 230 individual signatures, some of the more important signatures in the album are as follows, Johannes von Blaskowitz (who committed suicide 5th February 1948), Ernst Boepple (sentenced to death by Polish Court in 1949 and hanged December 15th 1950), Ernst Wilhelm Bohle, Walther von Brauchitsch (died before he could stand trial), Walter Buch (committed suicide in 1949), Leonardo Conti (spelt Leonardi on document) involved in the T4 Programme (committed suicide before his trial), Kurt Daluege (tried by the Czechs and hanged 1946), food and agriculture leader Richard Walther Darre (spelt Walter on document), Sepp Dietrich (Life Imprisonment), Karl Doenitz (10 years imprisonment), Karl von Eberstein, August Eigruer (hanged 1947), Franz Ritter von Epp (died before tried), Nikolaus von Falkenhorst (sentenced to death but later reduced to 20 years), Ludwig Fischer (handed over to Polish officials and tried and sentenced to death), Hans Frank (sentenced to death and hanged 1946), Wilhelm Frick (sentenced to death and hanged 1946), Hermann Goering (sentenced to death but committed suicide before sentence could be carried out), Arthur Greiser (hung in Poland), Paul Hausser, Rudolf Hess (life sentence), Franz Halder, Herman Hofle (committed suicide in 1962), Otto Hoffman (sentenced to 25 years), Alfred Jodl (sentenced to death and hanged 1946), Konstantin Kammerhofer, Wilhelm Keitel (sentenced to death and hanged 1946), Albert Kesselring (sentenced to death but changed to life imprisonment), Kurt Knoblauch, Robert Ley (committed suicide before trial), Julius Lippert (six years imprisonment in Belgium), Willy Messerschmitt, Erhard Milch (life imprisonment), Alfred Naujocks, Konstantin von Neurath (15 years imprisonment), Hanna Reitsch, Joachim von Ribbentrop (sentenced to death and hanged in 1946), Alfred Rosenberg (sentenced to death and hanged 1946), head of the BDM Jutta Ruediger, Fritz Sauckel (sentenced to death and hanged 1946), Walter Schimana (committed suicide awaiting trial), Arthur Seyss Inquart (sentenced to death and hanged 1946), Otto Skorzeny (acquitted at Dachau trial), Karl Wolffe, Julius Streicher (sentenced to death and hanged 1946), plus others, a full list is available. A truly unique and historical archive of signatures. The album was compiled by Hank Schardt. Born in Thuringa, Germany, 20th May 1918. Emigrated to Chicago aged 8 in 1926. In 1937 he left Lane Technical High School to join the US Army. He served at various US bases before being transferred to OCS and assigned to Army Intelligence in the European Theatre due to his understanding and being able to speak fluent German. Most of his work with this service was interrogating captured German officers and officials. During the Battle of the Bulge he was awarded the Bronze Star. At the end of the war he was assigned to an Intelligence unit at Nuremberg. His role here was again to process, interrogate and catalogue both German field grade officers and political officials. It was during this role that he collected all the documents and photographs that are in this album. After the war he remained with the US Army and was assigned to OSS before joining the CIA. He served as Station Chief in Karachi, Pakistan and Ankra, Turkey. His last four years in service were at Langley as Deputy to Dick Helms and Bill Colby, for covert operations. He retired from the service in 1976 with a rating of FS 1 and was awarded the CIA Intelligence Medal of Merit.
