He builds up the surface of the canvas by reworking the paint, sometimes scraping and layering it to achieve the finished result. Murphy's carefully composed still-life paintings and landscapes are executed with integrity and feeling. He was elected to the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolours (RSW) in 1996 and the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts (RGI) in 2000.

Iain Macnab had been Principal at Heatherley's Art School (1925 - 1940) and then went on to be founding Principal of the hugely influential Grosvenor School of Modern Art. Sheila's London influences and Glasgow School foundations evolved into a distinctive and individual style. She usually worked "en plein air" and her work is semi-abstract. She focused mainly on landscape where her training as a geographer, allowed her to use her understanding of land formation, the delicate balance of the seasons and the interaction between Man and the environment. He is famous for his stenciled graffiti works, which appear in public spaces around the world. His use of stenciling developed from a need to complete a work quickly, namely to avoid being caught vandalizing by police. Between 15th June and 28th August 2023 at the Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow he held his first show in 14 years: Cut & Run featuring stencils and more from his career on the street. “I’ve kept these stencils hidden away for years, mindful they could be used as evidence in a charge of criminal damage. But that moment seems to have passed, so now I’m exhibiting them in a gallery as works of art. I’m not sure which is the greater crime”

* HERBERT WHONE (BRITISH 1925 - 2011), INDUSTRIAL LANDSCAPE oil on canvas, signed and dated '68 framed image size 61cm x 118cm, overall size 75cm x 133cm Note: Herbert Whone was born in Bingley, West Yorkshire, where his parents were both employed in the cloth mills. He was encouraged by his mother to ''improve'' himself culturally, and from an early age took photographs and practised the violin. After education at the Royal Manchester College of Music (now the Royal Northern College of Music) and Manchester University, he secured positions in the Royal Opera House Orchestra and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, before moving to Glasgow in 1955, where he took up the position of deputy leader of the Scottish National Orchestra. He was inspired by Glasgow's changing fortunes and painted a series of notable canvases featuring the beauty of a city and surrounding areas in transition. His paintings of trams and shipbuilding on and around the Clyde, to pick two of his fondest subjects, were presented with warmth and beauty, almost impressionistic in their depiction of glowing sunsets and use of rich colour. Herbert Whone (often incorrectly catalogued as Herbert Bannister Whone, his father's name) enjoyed a degree of commercial success and critical acclaim in the 1950s/60s and his early known collectors included Joan Eardley, Margot Sandeman, Cyril Gerber, Johnny Beattie and Magnus Magnusson. In early 2010 we offered "A Clyde Boatyard" by Whone in The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction which sold for £650 (hammer) which at the time was the second highest recorded auction price for the artist. This relative success ignited our interest in Herbert Whone and when another example came to us a few months later, we included a lengthy lot essay in the catalogue to help inform and inspire collectors. In the years since we have continued to promote Herbert Whone's paintings which has seen us set new auction records at £2100, £3000, £4200, £6000, £7000, £8000, £11000, £13000 and then in September 2021 "Tram & Figures in Rain, Byres Road" (by Whone) sold for £18,000 (hammer). Although most of the Whone paintings we have offered are of Scottish scenes, his exceptional North of England paintings have also been growing in value "The Old Farmhouse" selling for £4900 and "Factories in the Snow" achieving £8000. The numbers of Herbert Whone paintings appearing at auction are small but the buyer demand continues to grow. Public collections include: Glasgow Museums & Galleries, The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, The Hepworth, Kirklees Museums & Galleries, Salford Museums & Galleries and The Mercer Gallery (Harrogate). A copy of "Herbert Whone, Glasgow - In Transition" (a 112 page illustrated hardback book) accompanies this lot.

In recent years James has spent time in the West Indies and in Brazil but he never tires of painting the landscape and coastline around his Ayrshire home and elsewhere in Scotland. * FRED YATES (BRITISH 1922 - 2008), FRENCH COUNTRYSIDE oil on boardframedimage size 99cm x 77cm, overall size 113cm x 92cm Provenance: The artists estateNote: Fred Yates was a self-taught British artist, known for his plein-air paintings of the English landscape. Influenced by so-called naïve art and the work of L S Lowry, Yates' work incorporated bold colours, loose brushwork, and child-like abstractions. Often, he layered paint on top of the canvas to create a thick, textured surface, giving his paintings a sculptural quality. Born on July 25, 1922 in Urmston, England, Yates fought in the Second World War alongside his twin brother, who was killed at the Battle of Arnheim. After the war, he began painting the Manchester cityscape in his free time and became well known in the local art scene, working alongside painter Lowry. Yates moved to Cornwall in 1968, where he began painting rocky beach landscapes and scenes of village life. He gained national attention after presenting his work at the 1985 exhibition “St Ives 1939– 64” at the Tate Gallery in London. A decade later, the artist moved to Rancon, France, painting the local landscape for the remainder of his artistic career. Yates died on July 7, 2008 in England at the age of 85. His work is held in the collections of the Brighton and Hove Art Gallery, Liverpool University, and the University of Warwick.

* ANDREW HAY (SCOTTISH b. 1944), PADDY'S MARKET oil on board, signedframedimage size 112cm x 160cm, overall size 135cm x 180cmComment: A rare auction appearance for a major painting by Andrew Hay and unquestionably the largest and most impressive example to be offered at auction, anywhere.Note: Having started to paint at the age of 39, within a year the People's Palace Museum, Glasgow had purchased ten paintings and had given Hay his first solo exhibition. Since then his works have been included in numerous public and private collections. His work deals with both narrative and nature, sometimes subverting one or the other in order to advance his artistic practise. His insistence on invention, freedom and risk affirms continuity in his aesthetic spirit. He uses a network of codes, symbols and expressive techniques which play off his collective memory and familiarity of everyday objects and culture from his childhood and juxtaposes them with present day reality. In so doing he embodies them with a new philosophical discourse. Andrew’s work now features in many significant public and private collections and is in the permanent collections of Glasgow's Kelvingrove, Gallery of Modern Art and The People's Palace.
* JOHN BYRNE RSA (SCOTTISH 1940 - 2023), L'ANGE NOIR watercolour and pastel on paper, signed and titled, dated 1991-1992 label versomounted, framed and under glassimage size 112cm x 134cm, overall size 135cm x 157cm Label verso: The Fine Art Society Ltd., LondonExhibition history: The Fine Art Society, John Byrne : Then Till Now, Edinburgh 2019.Note: Around 1991-92 John Byrne made a series of artworks featuring angels. "L'Ange Noir (The Black Angel) depicts an androgynous angel - half male and half female. The male side of the face shows stubble on the chin, short hair and a smaller eye. The female side has a wider eye, a clear complexion and flame red hair. The wings are complete on the female side but broken on the male side. There's little doubt that Byrne was expressing the complexities of human relationships and in the informed opinion of the vendor, L'Ange Noir is a reflection of issues John Byrne felt at the time in his relationship with Tilda Swinton.

* GORDON HOPE WYLLIE RSW (SCOTTISH 1930 - 2005), EVENING LIGHT mixed media on board, signedframed and under glassimage size 15cm x 18cm, overall size 32cm x 34cm Note: Gordon Wyllie was born in Greenock and in 1949 was accepted to study at the Glasgow School of Art. Under the tutelage of such luminaries as Edward Odling and Mary and Willie Armour, Gordon distinguished himself, graduating in 1953 after an eminent final year. He was awarded the post-diploma, or Master's course, won the Scottish Academy Award and also the Newbery Medal, the school's most prestigious prize. This was all the more remarkable considering that Gordon had, in his diploma year, returned home to care for his father, whose seriously deteriorating health ended in death two months before the degree show, and Gordon himself had suffered a bout of pneumonia. With a scholarship award, he studied that summer at Hospitalfield, Arbroath, as a post-graduate under Ian Fleming. Fleming inspired Gordon and encouraged him in abstraction, with which he occupied himself for the next few years. Meanwhile, he trained at Jordanhill College of Education in Glasgow to become a teacher, in the vanguard of the resurgence of art teaching in Scottish schools by the new art masters, undoubtedly because they painted actively while teaching full-time. Passionate about art education, he was instrumental in influencing many students to pursue a career in the creative industry. A former pupil aptly described his classroom as a "guided exploration rather than a formal lesson". His love of the Scottish countryside is mirrored in his work and undoubtedly stemmed from the bank of images he built when, as a youngster, he travelled with his parents around the country. Argyll and the Western Isles were his favourite destinations, where he was fascinated by the crofts and farms sprouting from the land. Small houses typified his landscapes and still-lifes included abstracted landscapes; flowers, particularly poppies, fruit and fish feature in his later output. In 1996, he was awarded the Alexander Graham Munro Prize at the RSW exhibition in Edinburgh. His work featured regularly in one-man and combined shows and at his last one-man show in London in 2003, demand for his paintings remained high, as it has done ever since. In the last couple of years auction prices, in Glasgow and elsewhere, have shown a significant surge, reflecting the increasing collector interest in Gordon Wyllie's work. His auction record price has been beaten on regular occasions and currently stands at £2400 (hammer) established in October 2020.
CATRIONA MILLAR, TIGER oil on canvas, initialled framed image size 30cm x 24cm, overall size 48cm x 42cm Note: Catriona Millar's work takes its inspiration from the stories that lie at the heart of the human condition, and the sparkle of a narrative behind the eyes of her subjects hints at everything from longing to melancholy. Her work often juxtaposes human characters with a variety of animal confidants, with some seeming physically present in the composition while others take on a talismanic quality. Born in Glasgow, Catriona Millar studied at Harrogate School of Art and Grays School of Art, Aberdeen. Since the success of her sell-out 2005 degree show she has exhibited across the UK including the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh. In October 2006 she came to the attention of Charles Saatchi with her first solo exhibition at the Dundas Street Gallery, Edinburgh. Catriona Millar now lives and paints in the southeast of England. Catriona Millar is listed in the 2012 edition of Who's Who in Scotland. In the Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 3rd May 2015 lot 2138 "The Agency" by Millar sold for £2800 (hammer).

* ALEXANDER GOUDIE RP RGI (SCOTTISH 1933 - 2004), GREEN ANGEL pastel on paper, signed, titled partial label versomounted, framed and under glassimage size 54cm x 64cm, overall size 85cm x 94cm Note: Alexander Goudie was born in 1933 at Paisley and, as a child, showed prodigious talent for drawing. He studied at Glasgow School of Art when William Armour was head of drawing and painting and David Donaldson was the ubiquitous influence. Goudie, as a student at Glasgow, demonstrated his extraordinary ability. He received the Somerville Shanks Prize for Composition and, later, his draughtsmanship and sense of colour was recognized with the award of the Newbery Medal. As a young artist he grew up admiring three great masters, Sir John Lavery, George Henry and James Guthrie; all artists who had bridged the gap between Glasgow and Paris. It was these artists’ glorious virtuoso control of oil paint that appealed to Goudie, as well as their genre and realist subject-matter. Alexander Goudie was elected a member of the Glasgow Art Club in 1956 and a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in 1970. He painted a portrait of the Queen for the Caledonian Club, London (1992/93), and exhibited widely, showing at Harari and Johns, in London, the Fine Art Society, Glasgow, and the Musee de la Faience, in Quimper. Sir Timothy Clifford, former Director of the National Galleries of Scotland, wrote: ''At his best, Goudie could draw better than any of his rivals in Scotland. There was magic and vision in his art and, I expect, history will be kind to him.'' Collections: 79 of Goudie's paintings are held in UK public collections including at Glasgow Museums & Galleries, The Hunterian, Rozelle House Galleries, Paisley Museum & Art Galleries and The Fleming Collection (London). * GORDON HOPE WYLLIE RSW (SCOTTISH 1930 - 2005), SLIGACHAN AND SGURR NAN GILLEAN, SKYE watercolour on paper, signed and titledmounted, framed and under glass image size 28cm x 40cm, overall size 49cm x 62cm Label verso: Panter & HallNote: Gordon Wyllie was born in Greenock and in 1949 was accepted to study at the Glasgow School of Art.
EDWARD CHISNALL, MOONLIT AUTUMN ON THE FIRTH oil on canvas, signed and dated '24unframedoverall size 100cm x 100cm Note: Edward H Chisnall is a well-known artist, author and broadcaster who was born in Glasgow in 1942, and studied at the Glasgow School of Art. His written works include Bell in the Tree: The Glasgow Story which was also broadcast as a series three times a day, every day of the week throughout 1990 by Radio Clyde. His paintings rarely appear at auction but whenever they do, it is very obvious how much time it must take to complete each one. The level of detail is always impressive but it's Edward Chisnall's imagination which is even more intriguing. Chisnall describes hismself as a surrealist figurative artist, well known for an imaginative take on irreality.

He visited St Kilda; many of his paintings were of that world-renowned archipelago, and Trust work there always had his special interest. While being a full time artist by then, he was also a keen hill walker which enabled him to gain access to other remote parts of Scotland, particularly the North-West and Hebridean Islands. Since the 1970's Jim held over 40 one-man exhibitions throughout Scotland and in London, his work being in great demand. Many of his paintings are in public and private collections in America, Australia, Canada, Germany, Hungary, Japan, South Africa and New Zealand, and throughout Britain, including that of HM Queen Elizabeth the late Queen Mother.

Born in Lanarkshire in 1926, Cunningham attended Glasgow School of Art (GSA) in 1953. From 1967 to 1985, he was a Senior Lecturer at GSA, thus having close contact with several generations of young painters for two decades. John lived in a magnificent and spacious studio flat in the centre of Glasgow which was designed by Sir John Burnett expressly for the use of an artist, and which had previously been owned by other artists including John McGhie and David Gauld. The vision of his paintings was an expression of the man. John Cunningham was a large, charismatic character who loved life abundantly and whose paintings reflected his joy and passion for vibrant colour and contrast, displaying bold, confident brush-strokes along with subtle sensitivity. This gives his work a wonderful freshness and vitality with the immediacy of the moment captured. In 1980 he was elected to the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts (RGI) and in 1990 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Strathclyde. He received numerous prestigious awards during his long career. He studied art in Brighton while in his twenties before moving to Lund in southern Sweden, where he lives with his wife and children. He exhibits regularly at the Royal Academy Summer Show, Catto Gallery and Petley Fine Art in London, Mira Godard Gallery in Canada as well as at galleries in New York and Glasgow. His work is held in numerous private and corporate collections throughout North America, the UK, Europe and Asia. Ever since his first exhibition in Brighton in 1978, Colin Fraser has worked almost exclusively in egg tempera, which has the benefit of being very long lasting, with examples over two thousand years old still in existence, and was the most widely used painting medium until the sixteenth century, when it was superseded by oils. However, it is also extraordinarily time-consuming. The painted surface must be built up layer by translucent layer, with the paint drying instantaneously and not amenable to manipulation afterwards, unlike oil paints. Although a notoriously difficult medium, it has become a firm favourite of Fraser’s, who says that the “restrictions have been paramount in helping me be more direct in my approach to the work, with the instant drying and transparency of the paint actively contributing to a higher level of spontaneity of execution”. Colin Fraser is particularly drawn to its vitality which reminds him “of the dynamism of the sun – never static, always changing”. “Observed light is usually what attracts me into the process of painting,” he says. “The surface of a work painted in tempera simply has a unique glow which cannot be imitated in other mediums”. Constructing each painting is an arduous process, each beginning with an idea or a chance observation followed by weeks of experimentation with arrangements and preparatory drawings. Many of his scenes are staged with strategic placement of chairs, diaphanous textiles and trays of fruit. He believes that the painter “chooses the content and the arrangement, and then it becomes a question of striving to achieve a particular mood”. The prestigious Catto Gallery (London) has staged highly succesful solo shows for Colin Fraser in 2015, 2017, 2019 & 2022.
