LI XIONG CAI (1910-2001) Fishing vessel in deep gorge, watercolour on paper laid to silk, inner painting 143cm x 76cm, as a whole 218cm x 89cm. Li Xiong Cai was born in Gaoyeo or Guangdong Province. He received a basic training in art from his father. From 1935 he held various posts in the Guangzhou Art Institute, the Guangzhou Academy and the National Art Academy in Chonqing. He held a number of one-man exhibitions, including one in Hong Kong in 1982 - he produced many huge paintings from a few metres to over ten metres long.

Bust 36" x Length 42" (Areas of missing beadwork). With a black swan down stole 60" x 8" wide. A further dropped waisted silk dress with lace around the neckline. Bust 36" x 52". (3)
TWO 1930'S CHIFFON TEA DRESSES A black sheer crepe, horizontally pin-tucked down the body to a drop waist line. The back is scooped falling to a small fishtail of ruffles. There is a double layer of fabric from the waist, fastened at the side with poppers, hook and eyes. Bust 36" x 28" Waist. A further black and red art deco print dress has short sleeves with bow detail. A ruffled hem, no fastenings. Bust 38" x 29" Waist Good condition (2)

"ARISE, YE PRISONERS OF STARVATION!"Excellent original art for a propaganda poster: "Arise Ye Prisoners of Starvation", a striking image painted in tempera on heavy paper, 18 1/2" x 32 1/2", date unknown. This fine work depicts a determined native woman clutching a rife with bayonet as her starving child clings to her back. The woman could be African, or more likely South American. An excellent painting, bearing only light surface soiling and worthy of display. From a single collection obtained entirely in China pre-2000.
CHINESE ANTI-AMERICAN VIETNAM WAR CARTOON ORIGINAL ARTOriginal piece of Chinese Vietnam War-era anti-American cartoon art, 21 3/4" x 31", comprised of five panels in four groups, depicting a group of American soldiers coming under enemy fire, retreating, and falling afoul of booby traps, including the infamous pit of punji sticks, with one poor soul being decapitated by an errant bullet. Each section is captioned in Chinese as follows: "(1.) Launch an attack (2.) In an ambush (3.)! (4.) Lucky to have a pair of long legs" The cartoon is executed in ink, with original pencil sketch visible beneath, with blue-painted panel borders. Minor chips and small tears to the edges, else very good.
CHINESE PATRIOTIC POSTERS URGE ON INCREASED PRODUCTIONGood lot of three large and vibrant Chinese political posters, includes: "Hold High the Glaring Banner of the Charter of the Anshan Iron and Steel Company and Struggle for More Industrial Victory" (Shenyang: Liaoning Xin Hua Bookstore), 1970, 20 3/4" x 30", an image of a steelworker fervently shoveling coal into a furnace, with other workers and banners with slogans visible on the factory floor behind him. The Charter of the Anshan Steel Company was a document of the management methods adopted by the eponymous company, which became the blueprint for running socialist businesses in China. Some chipping and small tears at the edges, else very good. WITH: "We Must Harness Huihe River", by Zhongwen Li (Henan: Henan People's Publishing House), 1976, 29 3/4" x 41", an image of a smiling worker leading a procession, with tractors, a field, and the spillways of a dam visible in the background. WITH: "I Contribute the Petroleum for the Motherland", by Riulong Wu (Tianjin: People's Fine Art Publishing House), 1976, 30" x 41", an image of an oil rig worker handling a drill bit, with a railyard, refinery, and pipelines visible behind him. "QUOTATIONS OF CHAIRMAN MAO" POSTERSGood lot of three large and vibrant Chinese political posters, includes: "Guard Against Atomic Bombs, Guard Against Chemical Weapons, Guard Against Bacteria" The Headquarters of the General Staff of the People's Liberation Army, 1971, 21" x 30", a depiction of a group of soldiers and workers, some carrying weapons, with a PLA soldier brandishing a copy of Mao Zedong's "Little Red Book" overhead. Minor chipping and small tears at the edges, else very good. WITH: "We Should Be Prepared From Now On" ([n.p.]: People's Art Press), 1971, 30" x 20 3/4", a depiction of a People's Liberation Army soldier with full pack and rifle, holding a copy of Mao's "Little Red Book", with a column of soldiers marching through a mountain pass in the background. Some chipping at the edges, with minor paper loss, else very good. WITH: "The Educated Youth Should Go to the Countryside to be Reeducated by the Poor and Lower-Middle Class Peasants" (Sichuan: Sichuan People's Press), 1969, 30" x 20 3/4", a depiction of a smiling young man and woman on either side of a farmer holding a copy of Mao's "Little Red Book", with other farmers and workers in a background, framed against a wide river valley showing both agricultural and industrial scenery, lit by a rising sun. The "reeducation" practiced throughout China during the Cultural Revolution of these period was rarely as pleasant for anyone involved as depicted here. Pin holes at the corners, minor chipping, else very good. Three pieces.
"BATTLE SONGS TO WELCOME SPRING"Large and vibrant Chinese political poster, "Battle Songs to Welcome Spring", by Zhai Gu Han (Shanghai: Shanghai Fine Art Publishing House), 1977, 30 1/2" x 20 3/4", depicting a group of ten women singing into a microphone connected to a reel-to-reel tape recorder in the midst of a street festival, with a group of smiling soldiers, workers, and other citizens milling around in the background. The title of the piece is printed in red Chinese characters at the bottom left corner. Very good. From a single collection obtained entirely in China pre-2000.

POSTER PROMOTES "ONE CHILD POLICY"Large and vibrant Chinese political poster, "Have a Surplus for Years Running", People's Art Press, 1981, 21" x 30 1/2", a depiction of a smiling baby boy astride a giant goldfish, with a smaller depiction of a baby girl riding a pink swan in the background. The preferential depiction of the boy appears to reference China's "one child policy" and the preference for male children that it spawned. Very good to fine.
"IMPERIALISTS AND REACTIONARIES ARE ALL JUST PAPER TIGERS"Colorful Chinese political poster, "Imperialists and Reactionaries are All Just Paper Tigers" ([n.p.], Xinhua News Agency), 1966, 10 1/2" x 15 1/4", depicting an injured tiger as a representation of Western imperialism burning over an open flame. The poster was printed as part of a gallery exhibition on anti-imperialist art. The phrase "Paper Tiger" was used by Mao to describe American imperialism in 1956: "In appearance it is very powerful but in reality it is nothing to be afraid of; it is a paper tiger. Outwardly a tiger, it is made of paper, unable to withstand the wind and the rain. I believe that it is nothing but a paper tiger." Folds, with one small tear at the bottom edge, else very good to fine."
"FOR INDEPENDENCE AND FREEDOM!"Large and vibrant Chinese political poster, "For Independence and Freedom!", People's Art Press, 1962, first edition of 60,000, 19" x 30 1/4", a depiction of a black man clutching a rifle against a fiery background, appearing to reference the African anti-colonialist movements of the 1950s and 1960s. Folds, a small hole at center-left which has been mended on the verso with archival tape, else very good.
"LITTLE EXPLORERS"Large and vibrant Chinese political poster, "Little Explorers" (Zhejiang: Zhejiang People's Art Press), 1988, 20 1/2" x 30", a depiction of a young boy with a brass telescope and a young girl with binoculars, both observing a variety of fantastical spacecraft and planets overhead. Posters such as these were intended to encourage children to develop an interest in science and technology. Folds, some minor chipping and small tears at the edges, else very good.
"THE LITTLE PARTNER SENT TO THE PLANET"Large and vibrant Chinese poster, "The Little Partner Sent to the Planet (Tianjin: People's Fine Art Publisging House), 1980, 21" x 30 3/4", a depiction of a young child in a small spaceship named "Xian Feng", after the ninth emperor of the Qing dynasy, wearing a space suit and helmet with a red star and "CHINA" on the front, and with a camera around his neck. he is accompanied by a dog and a cat in space helmets, with supplies of canned food for both. The trio floats above a cratered planet, with other planets and a rocket visible in the background. Some chipping and a 2" vertical tear at the edges, with a blue pencil notation on the verso, else very good.
"TRAVELING IN SPACE"Large and vibrant Chinese poster, "Traveling in Space" (Shanghai: Shanghai People's Fine Art Publishing House), 1983, first edition of 200,000, 30" x 20 3/4", a depiction of a Chinese child at the helm of a fantastical spacecraft, as a second child operates a camera from a seat on the wing of the craft. A monkey with a staff looks on from the rear, possibly in reference to the character of Sun Wukong, or the "Monkey King", from the classical Chinese novel "Journey to the West". Several planets, satellites, and other heavenly bodies are visible in the bckground. Bears a 1 3/4"vertical tear at the botom edge, else very good.
"WE LOVE SCIENCE" ORIGINAL POSTER ARTOriginal piece of Chinese poster art, 21 1/2" x 31", entitled "We Love Science", depicting a smiling young girl holding a book entitle "Science for Children" at lower left, surrounded by rockets and other fantastical space craft. The illustration is executed in watercolor, with original pencil art visible underneath. Pin holes at the corners, chipping at the edges with some paper loss, else very good.
(GANG OF FOUR) "SIRENBANG XIANXINGJI"Softbound Chinese publication, "Sirenbang Xianxingji", (Beijing: The People's Fine Art Publishing House), 1978 (first edition), 82pp. oblong 12mo., a collection of 78 political cartoons lampooning and vilifying the Gang of Four, the clique headed by Mao Zedong's wife, Jiang Qing, which dominated Chinese politics in the late stages of the Cultural Revolution. Following Mao's death in 1976, they were blamed for the worst excesses of that period, and Jiang was sentenced to death. Bears some soiling, with rust stains from the binding staples, else very good. "ASIAN-AFRICAN ANTI-IMPERIALIST COMICS EXHIBITION"Chinese softbound publication, "Asian-African Anti-Imperialist Comics Exhibition" [n.p.]Asian-African Journalists Association, 1966. 32pp. 8vo., a guide to an anti-imperialist art exhibition, featuring a collection of thirty political cartoons decrying western and specifically American imperialism and militarism. Prominently featured figures include President Lyndon Johnson, who in one instance is depicted choking on Vietnam, as well as other western leaders. Most of the cartoons featured here explicitly condemn the United States' presence in Vietnam. Some slight reading wear and toning, else very good. "THE EAST WIND IS PREVAILING OVER THE WEST WIND CARTOON ANTHOLOGY"Chinese softbound publication, "The East Wind is Prevailing Over the West Wind Cartoon Anthology", by Shen Fan, et al. (Shanghai: Shanghai People's Fine Art Publishing House), 1958, 43pp. square 8vo., a collection of pro-Communist and anti-Western political cartoons. The most interesting of these depict the advances made by the Soviet space program over that of the Americans, including several depictions of the Sputnik orbital satellite, which was launched in October of 1957. Other illustrations comment of race relations in America and the perceived western desire to use atomic energy as a tool for war, rather than peace. The booklet appears to have been disbound and re-stapled, with several pages loose at the front. The cover bears soiling and toning, with a tear to one corner mended with cello tape, else very good. CHINESE LACQUERED WOOD CABINETChinese black and colored lacquer two door cabinet, 31" x 43" x 15", finely hand painted in bright colors with floral and geometric patterns, mounted with brass lock plates and standing on straight legs, bearing a brass ticket: "George Zee & Co LTD. Kiln Dried Art Carved Manufacturers. Factory: 83 Hung To Road. Kwun Tong, Kowloon, H.K. Tel. K-684264. no. A 29" on the back. Likely manufactured in the 1950-60's. The decoration intended to encapsulate the exoticism of the East, specifically to appeal to Western tastes and markets. Fine.

Further captioned: "Our literature and art are for the...workers, peasants, and soldiers...". Flaws include a slight damp stain, soiling, light folds and marginal tack holes, still quite good. “SUPPORT THE PEOPLE'S ANTI-IMPERIALIST MOVEMENT ACROSS THE WHOLE WORLD!"Striking color poster by artist You Long Gu: "Support the People's anti-imperialist movement across the whole world!”, published by Shanghai People’s Art Publishing House, 1967. A dramatic, vividly colored 30" x 42" poster from the "internationalist" period of the Cultural Revolution, when the Chinese and their Cuban allies were making inroads into Latin America and Africa. Depicts three figures, a black man, an Hispanic man holding a rifle, and an Asian woman, looking hopefully towards the horizon and the future, with a red sun representing Mao and his teachings in the background.
