An iron folding stool frame or stand with ribbed balusters, legs each with square-section central element and octagonal-section outer ends; transverse stringers to each end; square flange to the inner edge of each leg, polyhedral to the outer edge, polyhedral stops to the hinge-pins; offered with canvas seat for display purposes. 1.6 kg, 49cm (19 1/4"). Property of an Essex collector; acquired on the European art market. This simple construction and ease of storage meant that this object was ideal for use by senior officers as the army moved during a campaign. Very fine condition. Rare.
3rd-7th century AD. A cuboid haematite stamp seal with pierced suspension lug, images to the five faces comprising two rearing horses, a quadruped with zigzag above, standing figure with bird, standing figure confronting a horse. 23 grams, 27mm (1"). A group of stamp seals consisting of: two rock crystal seals, one engraved with circles to the body and walking lion to the underside, one engraved with a flying bird with wings outspread to the back and legs forward, peletted border; three carnelian seals, one engraved with with a winged ibex, one with a standing lion, one with circles to the body and underside with grazing zebu. 25 grams total, 15-20mm (3/4 - 1"). A bronze Corpus Christi with flat-topped crown, ribs and wrists delineated with engraved lines, flared loincloth with legs flexed; the facial features modelled in the round, with lentoid eyes and triangular nose; with affixing holes to hands and beneath the feet. A small silver spoon with shallow piriform bowl, round-section shank, ribbed collar with standing robed figure modelled in the round; the reverse of the bowl with incised detail of foliage and pellets, rear of the joint with stamped hollow triangle; the figure standing bearded in a floor-length robe with tremolier texturing, hands folded at the chest. A set of four sheet-gold monofacial repoussé bracteates, each with the facing bust of a Byzantine Holy Emperor, probably Constantine IV, Pogonatus (Senior Augustus 15th July 668-10th July 685 AD), in military attire holding spear over his right shoulder; two lateral stitching holes for attachment; edge folded to the reverse. 3.08 grams total, 19-20mm (3/4"). The Apsaras were water spirits who first appeared during the Vedic period of Hindu India. As heavenly beings they are associated with the celestial musicians, the Ghandarvas.
