Alexander Goudie was elected a member of the Glasgow Art Club in 1956 and a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in 1970. He painted a portrait of the Queen for the Caledonian Club, London (1992/93), and exhibited widely, showing at Harari and Johns, in London, the Fine Art Society, Glasgow, and the Musee de la Faience, in Quimper. His entire family, including his grandfather, and everybody he knew, were in shipbuilding. He was always passionate about boats. He believed he was very lucky. "I was in the right place at the right time. I caught the tail-end of the Clydeside shipbuilding boom in the 1950s. Shipyards had full order-books and the river teemed with craft of every sort. So I always had a subject”. His paintings are in a formidable array of collections – including those of HM The Queen and Prince Philip, The Princess Royal, The Arts Council, The Hunterian, Glasgow Museums, Paisley Museum & Art Gallery, IBM, Britoil, the Danish Embassy, Yarrow Shipbuilders, McKean Museum and Art Gallery, Clyde Shipping Co, the Royal Bank of Scotland and also the town council in the Faroes. Watt went to Glasgow School of Art for four years where he was taught by Ted Odling, Douglas Percy Bliss, and David Donaldson. In 1958 he was one of 13 founders of the Glasgow Group, an artists' co-operative which continues to this day. Irritated by the conformist, unadventurous policies of local exhibiting societies like the Royal Scottish Academy and the RGI, and at the dearth of commercial outlets in the city, they got together with other GSA students and graduates to exhibit at Glasgow’s then-beautiful McLellan Galleries. The Glasgow Group was the Transmission Gallery of its day. After two years National Service in the army, from 1955 to 1957 he became an art teacher, and a much-beloved one at that. He was noted for his kindness and good counsel, and one former student says of him: "I had pretty much zero talent but he sparked a lifelong love and interest in art." Another remembered “His was the fastest-moving Volvo down the school drive. He was some man." Later Watt became a member of the RGI and was elected a member of Society of Scottish Artists in 1965. In 1997 he received The Royal Bank of Scotland Award at the Glasgow Institute. He dedicated much of his life to recording the River Clyde and its industries, and his vast body of work forms a vital archive of the river. Greenock's McLean Museum and Art Gallery exhibition, The Lost Clyde: The Paintings of James Watt, was mounted to celebrate his 90th birthday. James was also the father of Alison Watt OBE FRSE RSA, one of Britain's best-known painters.

* PHILIP RASKIN (SCOTTISH b. 1947) A WALK THROUGH LIFE oil on canvas, signed, titled versoframedimage size 31cm x 101cm, overall size 47cm x 117cm Note: Born in 1947, Philip studied at the Glasgow School of Art in the 1960s. However, due to his father's untimely death, he had to postpone his career in art and left art school to enter the business world where he stayed for the next 30 years. For 20 of those years, he was the well known proprietor of The Inn on the Green, a celebrated jazz restaurant, in Glasgow. During this time, he maintained his contact with the world of art however, by running a schedule of art exhibitions and openings within the venue. Upon leaving the restaurant in the 1990s, Philip returned to his easel and brushes and since then has become a successful full time artist with broad appeal. He now lives and works from his studio just outside Glasgow. Philip's unique style is instantly recognisable combining a heavy impasto application of the paint alongside more delicate and sensitive brush strokes. Focussing mainly on landscape painting, his inspiration comes from the islands of the west coast of Scotland with Barra, Islay, Jura and Arran being some of his favourite locations. He deftly captures the essence and light of the landscapes through his work, the rugged shorelines, dramatic seascapes and ever changing skies. "I tend to paint very private places for the viewer to own and enjoy. No people, no houses, no telegraph poles; just expansive skies, mist tumbling on a distant hillside and a silence broken only by lapping water and gulls ascending".

* GORDON HOPE WYLLIE RSW (SCOTTISH 1930 - 2005), COTTAGES, EAST COAST gouache on board, signed, titled label versomounted, framed and under glass image size 10cm x 15cm, overall size 48cm x 50cm Label verso: Compass Gallery, GlasgowNote: Gordon Wyllie was born in Greenock and in 1949 was accepted to study at the Glasgow School of Art. Under the tutelage of such luminaries as Edward Odling and Mary and Willie Armour, Gordon distinguished himself, graduating in 1953 after an eminent final year. He was awarded the post-diploma, or Masters course, won the Scottish Academy Award and also the Newbery Medal, the school's most prestigious prize. This was all the more remarkable considering that Gordon had, in his diploma year, returned home to care for his father, whose seriously deteriorating health ended in death two months before the degree show, and Gordon himself had suffered a bout of pneumonia. With a scholarship award, he studied that summer at Hospitalfield, Arbroath, as a post-graduate under Ian Fleming. Fleming inspired Gordon and encouraged him in abstraction, with which he occupied himself for the next few years. Meanwhile, he trained at Jordanhill College of Education in Glasgow to become a teacher, in the vanguard of the resurgence of art teaching in Scottish schools by the new art masters, undoubtedly because they painted actively while teaching full-time. Passionate about art education, he was instrumental in influencing many students to pursue a career in the creative industry. A former pupil aptly described his classroom as a "guided exploration rather than a formal lesson". His love of the Scottish countryside is mirrored in his work and undoubtedly stemmed from the bank of images he built when, as a youngster, he traveled with his parents around the country. Argyll and the Western Isles were his favourite destinations, where he was fascinated by the crofts and farms sprouting from the land. Small houses typified his landscapes and still-lifes included abstracted landscapes; flowers, particularly poppies, fruit and fish feature in his later output. In 1996, he was awarded the Alexander Graham Munro prize at the RSW exhibition in Edinburgh. His work featured regularly in one-man and combined shows and at his last one-man show in London in 2003, demand for his paintings remained high, as it has done ever since.

* LEX MCFADYEN (SCOTTISH b. 1958), STILL LIFE, POPPIES oil on board, signedframed and under glassimage size 31cm x 31cm, overall size 50cm x 50cmNote: Lex McFadyen is a Scottish painter who graduated from the Glasgow School of Art with a degree in sculpture before embarking on a career as a fashion designer. Known to many for his fashion designs and couture ranges, Lex returned to painting in 2002. Throughout this time, he has gained a growing following who have collected his portraits, sculptures and atmospheric skyscapes. His move to France has encouraged a shift to still lifes inspired by the colours and beauty to his French surroundings. In recent years, Lex has been forced to experiment with colour after a brain haemorrhage caused him to 'forget' how to mix the colours he had previously used. Re-evaluating the point of colour and his approach to painting, Lex's work seeks a new level of vibrancy and interpretation, painting more freely with more of an artistic licence. He works from his two studios; one based in the Crinan Canal in Argyll and the second in the medieval village of Noyers sur Serein in Burgundy, France where he now spends the majority of his time.

* PAM CARTER DA PAI (SCOTTISH 1952 - 2022), ORCHIDS watercolour on paper, signedmounted, framed and under glassimage size 51cm x 65cm, overall size 76cm x 89cm Note: Pam Carter was born in Tanganyika, East Africa to an Austrian mother and Scottish father. At the age of thirteen, she came to Scotland where she schooled at Bearsden Academy. She graduated from Glasgow School of Art in the seventies. "My main inspiration as an artist is in the Scottish landscape and seascape. I enjoy using colour to define contours, structure and changing light sequences. I search out specific viewpoints. I am equally inspired by the rugged isolation of the Western Isles and the dramatic viewpoints of the Eastern coastline. I work predominantly in oil". Pam Carter was unquestionably one of Scotland's most popular and successful contemporary artists. She won numerous awards and prizes, always received significant media attention, has been the subject of many magazine features and had several tv appearances. Her work was widely exhibited but rarely appears at auction.Comment: Pam was a special artist and one who enjoyed wide popularity and substantial commercial success. In all our dealings with Pam over the years, she was always generous with her time and quick to provide the background to paintings we had received from private consignors and filling in gaps about locations, dates etc. Pam's work is instantly recognisable and she had that rare gift, even among the best artists, of being able to use the minimum of brushwork to create the maximum visual effect. Her "lines" were those of the natural environment but she knew exactly how to "see" them and portray them on canvas. Despite her commercial success, or perhaps even because of it, Pam's work probably hasn't yet reached the full audience that it so richly deserves. She exhibited frequently at numerous galleries in Scotland and gallery owners were inevitably in a queue to secure her work. Typically, Pam showed loyalty to those who were the first to support her when she was a relative unknown. Talented artists always wish to be remembered by their work and Pam Carter can be certain of that, but she'll also be remembered with great affection by all those who had the good fortune to meet her or know her.

In a career spanning more than 50 years, he has taught in schools in Dundee, Perth and Aberdeen. His vivid, and instantly recognizable, paintings have found their way into a host of public buildings such as airports and hospitals and are sought after by large corporate collectors including John Lewis plc, Baxters Food Group and the Royal Bank of Scotland. In 1964, at barely 17 years of age, he won a place at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee and studied under the then Head of Painting, the larger than life, Scottish-Italian painter Alberto Morrocco and his Deputy David McClure. Upon graduation, Francis’ professional career was dictated by the rhythm of school life. After completing an MA at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen and nearly 30 years teaching, Francis decided to challenge the maxim, ‘those who can, do and those who can’t, teach’ and in 2001 went on to achieve a life-long ambition of making a career as an artist. His paintings are less about copying a scene, than creating a representation of it, a representation which has to be on the one hand a recognisable place or space but also a world where the imagination is unleashed. Polls published in the press in Scotland and Ireland have both placed him in their lists of top 50 best-selling artists, and he is one of only a few artists who has work in the National Collections of both countries. For many years he has donated images of his work to the children’s charity, UNICEF who have recently published a Box set of his Scottish landscapes and in 2015 his Christmas card design was UNICEF’s top seller, raising more than £35,000 for the Charity.

Hamish MacDonald is now widely regarded as one of Scotland's most successful contemporary artists. From 1964, Hamish staged numerous solo exhibitions in Scotland and Cornwall. He also participated in group shows with prominent galleries in London and throughout the UK. His works can be found in many major collections throughout the world.

* SIR WILLIAM GEORGE GILLIES CBE RA RSA PRSW (1898 - 1973), HIGHLAND FARM, PERTHSHIRE pencil on paper, signed, titled label versomounted, framed and under glassimage size 22cm x 36cm, overall size 48cm x 61cm Label verso: Louise Kosman Modern British Art, EdinburghNote: Born in Haddington, East Lothian in 1898, William Gillies studied at Edinburgh College of Art (ECA), where his teachers included D M Sutherland, David Alison, Adam Bruce Thomson and Donald Moodie. In 1922 Gillies graduated and became a founder member of the 1922 Group with Sir William MacTaggart, Robert Crozier, Geissler and others. In 1923 he received a Travelling Scholarship and visited Paris with Geissler, studying with Andre Lhote, before travelling on to Florence. In 1929, after a year teaching at Inverness Academy, Gillies joined ECA's staff, which now included MacTaggart with John Maxwell. During the late 1920s and 1930s Gillies developed a loose, almost Expressionist style, painting the Scottish landscape on the spot, often spending painting holidays with John Maxwell and others in Dumfries & Galloway. In 1939 he moved to the Midlothian village of Temple where the surrounding landscape provided the subject for many of his later works. He visited the villages of East Linton, Haddington, Howgate and Gifford on his motorcycle, painting in oil and watercolour. In the post war period his landscapes became more complex, using intricate patterns of roofs, winding roads, fences, trees and hedges as constructive elements. Pencil and ink outlines became important in his watercolours. He also enjoyed the east coast fishing villages whose nets and boats provided similar fascination. In 1946 he was appointed Head of Painting at ECA, becoming Principal 1960-6. Despite his full-time teaching job his art never suffered and he continued to paint landscapes, interiors and still-life right up to his death.

* WILLIAM BIRNIE RSW RGI (SCOTTISH 1929 - 2006), APPLE ORCHARD, NORMANDY mixed media on board, signed and dated '94, titled versomounted, framed and under glassimage size 23cm x 78cm, overall size 47cm x 100cm Note: Bill Birnie studied at Glasgow School of Art under Gilbert Spencer and then at Hospitalfield under Ian Fleming. After graduating, he joined the staff at Hyndland Secondary School in 1952. That same year he was also elected a member of the Society of Scottish Artists (SSA). In 1958, he became a founder member of the Glasgow Group and formed the Glasgow Group Society, of which he was Vice-President for 32 years. In 1965, he was elected a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW), a society of which he also became Vice-President and Treasurer. He became Principal Art Teacher at Douglas Academy, near Bearsden, and later at Gryffe High, near Kilbarchan. Bill's abilities not only as a teacher but also as an administrator were noticed by the Department of Education and he was soon appointed Head Examiner in Art for Scotland. He still managed to maintain a very active exhibiting schedule and showed in all the main public galleries and many of Scotland's best commercial galleries. His work was enthusiastically collected and increasingly sought after. He was elected a member of the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Art (RGI) and of the Paisley Art Institute (PAI). In the early years, he painted from his garden, showing the village of Kilbarchan in its changing seasons, under a quiet blanket of winter snow, or framed in a blazing sunset through autumnal trees. Later visits to France and Italy with his artist wife, Cynthia Wall, whom he married in 1953, brought new subject matter, cafe scenes, vine groves, Italian clifftop villages, and the crumbling facades of palaces and churches of Venice. It was characteristic of the man that when told that his illness was terminal, he calmly put his affairs in order and started work for a final one-man show at the Open Eye Gallery (Edinburgh) the scene of so many of his successful shows. Unsurprisingly, the exhibition was a complete sell-out. In recent years there has been a widely acknowledged acceleration in the prices achieved at auctions around the UK for William Birnie's paintings. In the Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 8th November 2020 lot 567 "The Red House" a 60 x 90cm oil sold for £3000 (hammer) which, not for the first time in recent years, set a new auction record for a painting by William Birnie.

Only a relatively few of these prints were hand signed (in pencil) by Hannah and it's understood that only one print was ever editioned (numbered) in a conventional manner. A major exhibition at the Royal Glasgow Institute in 2006 brought her work to a new generation of admirers and received considerable press coverage. Her work toured for five years in the UK and the USA culminating in an exhibition at Glasgow University which opened on her 100th birthday 23rd August 2008.
