A lozenge-section silver bow with trapezoidal catchplate, flared terminal with hinged square-section pin; the lower ends of the bow with circumferential ribbing, upper faces of the bow and catchplate with tremolier hatching. Cf. Hattatt, R. Ancient and Romano-British Brooches, Sherborne, 1982, item 199; Beck, H. et al. Fibel und Fibeltracht, Berlin, 2000, item 13. 3.56 grams, 41mm (1 3/4"). UK art market, acquired prior to 2000. The brooch belongs to the Hallstatt tradition of arched bow brooches, but it features a hinge rather than the more usual coiled spring. Fine condition.

A southern European ornamental military buckle plate comprising a rectangular plaque, curved in two planes, with cast running tendril strip borders and attachment bar to the rear; a piriform domed appliqué to each corner and central domed appliqué with trefoil extension; integral loop with palmette; S-link closure with rosette appliqué; Balkan workmanship. 495 grams, 20cm (8").
