AN EMERALD-GREEN AND WHITE 'PINES IN THE SNOW' JADEITE SNUFF BOTTLE, 1770-1850China. Smoothly polished and well hollowed, the flattened rectangular body rising from a short oval foot to a cylindrical neck. The semi-translucent icy white stone with vivid emerald-green inclusions, creating the legendary 'pine trees in the snow' effect.Provenance: From a UK private collection, acquired from Robert Kleiner & Co. Ltd., London. A copy of the original invoice dated 20 November 2000 and confirming the dating and description above accompanies this lot. Robert Kleiner (1948-2014) was an important expert on and dealer of Chinese snuff bottles, beginning his long career at Sotheby's Chinese Art department in London. Along with Hugh Moss and Bob Hall, Robert Kleiner became a key advisor to the Mary and George Bloch collection, and it was Robert who wrote and produced the very first catalog of their bottles. Condition: Excellent condition with only minor wear and tiny nibbles to neck. With a fine, unctuous feel overall. The Chinese have traditionally taken a subjective and often poetic approach to the appreciation of art, including towards the materials with which they work. The name given to jadeite is feicui and refers to the brilliance of a kingfisher's plumage. Jadeite, itself, however, does not appear in exactly the colors of the feathers or, indeed, with their iridescence. The type of jadeite shown in the present example is known as 'pine trees in the snow' since the markings resemble the idea of a pine tree-filled snowy landscape. Stopper: Green glass and carved spoon Weight: 86.7 g Dimensions: Height including stopper 65 mm. Diameter neck 18 mm and mouth 6 mm. A RARE BUFFALO HORN 'XINIU' SEAL, EARLY QING DYNASTYChina, 17th-18th century. Of oval form, surmounted by a finely carved xiniu standing foursquare and gazing up at the sky, the beast neatly detailed with thick brows, an elegantly curved horn, muscular legs, and incised mane and paws.Inscriptions: The seal face, 'Jieda Huanxi' ('happiness for everyone').Provenance: Spanish trade, by repute from an old private estate in Madrid. Austrian private collection, acquired from the above.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and a network of natural age cracks, some of which appear to have grown in size over time. Few minor nicks. Naturally developed, smooth, dark-brown patina.Weight: 39 g Dimensions: Height 7.6 cmThe xiniu is a legendary Chinese animal. In ancient Chinese texts, the term xiniu originally meant rhinoceros. In later periods, the creature became increasingly mythologized after the rhinoceros was extinct in post-archaic China. By the Song dynasty, it had become a beast of legend, known only through literary references. Over time, the depiction of this animal changed to a more bovine appearance with a single curved horn on its head that was used to communicate with the sky, which is why the xiniu is mostly depicted while gazing up at the moon. Expert's note: The figure is skillfully carved to varying degrees of thickness, resulting in increased translucence to areas carefully chosen by the lapidary, such as the horn, thus resulting in an overall enhanced appearance. This is a long-lost master technique indicating an early Qing-dynasty date.Auction result comparison: Compare a related buffalo horn seal carved with a goat, 6.4 cm high, dated to the Republic period, at Sotheby's Hong Kong in Chinese Art on 3 December 2015, lot 351, sold for HKD 75,000. A RARE SILK EMBROIDERED CHESTNUT-GROUND CHILD'S DRAGON ROBE, JIFU, QING DYNASTYChina, late 18th - late 19th century. Finely woven in silk and gold thread with eight four-clawed dragons pursuing flaming pearls amid multi-colored clouds interspersed with bats, peonies, and Buddhist symbols, all above the terrestrial diagram, turbulent waves, and lishui stripe with peonies at the hem, the midnight blue-ground cuffs and collar bands worked with further dragons.Provenance: From the collection of a lady of title in the United Kingdom.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, few loose threads, and little soiling.Dimensions: Length 99 cm, Width 151 cmExpert's note: The present robe is rare in that it appears to be based on official court clothing but was nevertheless made for a child, who would not have been permitted to attend court functions - except an Emperor himself in his minority, which would not have been the case before the mid-19th century. Compare a similar robe illustrated by M. Myers, Silks for Thrones and Altars, Blanchard, 2003, page 66, number 28, which the author describes as quasi-official, and suggests that it would have been worn at personal and seasonal celebrations within a family context. Such family occasions would mirror the court functions of the time, with the patriarch and matriarch viewed as emperor and empress within the family, and similar gradations of status conferred on family members and reflected in their apparel. This would achieve the sense of universal order and harmony within the family context which the emperor embodied on a larger scale for the nation. The close resemblance of a boy's dress to an adult's encourages the son to emulate the status and importance of the father.Auction result comparison: Compare a related chestnut-ground silk gauze child's robe, 92 cm long, dated to the Jiaqing period, at Bonhams New York in Chinese Paintings and Works of Art on 14 September 2015, lot 8091, bought-in at an estimate of USD 30,000-50,000. According to a myth, Paiwan ancestors lived in a location on Dawu mountain (Tawushan) that was called Paiwan, where heaven was said to exist. Paiwan people have spread out from this location, so the name of the original place was assumed as their group name. According to some group members, Paiwan also means 'human being'.The social system of the Paiwan consists of three levels: the nobility (aristocrats and landowners), the second-rank nobility, and the ordinary people. Only members of the first rank have the privilege of owning works bearing the sacred motifs of the serpent or the human figure, both considered as representing ancestors. Sculpture is the privileged way for Paiwan aristocrats to distinguish their houses, perceived as the incarnation of the social status, authority, privileges, and existence of a fundamental entity of society.Literature comparison: Compare a related Paiwan carved wood architectural ornament, 23 by 80 cm, also dated 19th to early 20th century, in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 1987.453.4.Auction result comparison: Compare a related Paiwan carved wood container lid, 45.1 cm diameter, at Sotheby's New York in Art of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas on 18 May 2021, lot 35, sold for USD 37,800. Art of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas 2021年5月18日 lot 35, 售價USD 37,800。

A MONUMENTAL WOOD STATUE OF GUANYIN, QING DYNASTYChina, 1644-1912. Finely carved standing, wearing a loose flowing robe falling in graceful folds to just above the bare feet, open at the chest to reveal a floral necklace, the eyes with black glass inlays, the hair swept up into a high chignon and centered with a figure of Amitabha seated on a lotus-form base. Traces of red, white and black pigments.Scientific Analysis Report: A 14C measurement report was completed by Antiques Analytics Laboratory, Germany, Dr. R. Neunteufel, on 14 December 2020, number AA 21-06102. The report states a date of 1687 - 1730 (24% probability) or 1806 - 1925 (71,4% probability). A copy of the report accompanies the lot. Provenance: From a noted private collection in Poland. Acquired ca. 1990 in the local market. Condition: The statue with losses, worm holes, remnants of pigments, natural age cracks, all as expected and commensurate with age.Dimensions: Height 158 cm (excluding the plexiglass base) Mounted to a fitted plexiglass base (2).This finely carved figure retains all of the robust power and majesty seen in figures of Tang, Song and Jin dynasty date. The folds of the drapery in the shawl, scarves and dhoti worn by this figure are reminiscent of that seen in painted wood figures of Song date, but the small, pursed mouth, the slender nose and oblique eyes, combined with the crown are more similar to those found in Ming painted sculpture.Literature comparison: Another figure of this type, dated Song dynasty, is in The National Gallery, Prague and is illustrated in Lubor Hajek and Werner Forman, A Book of Chinese Art, plate XIII. The long scarf draping over the shoulders and trailing to the base appears to be a characteristic of sculpture of the Yuan to Ming dynasty. See, for example, two large painted wood figures of bodhisattvas, each measuring 220 cm., from the Liang-sheng T'ang Collection, illustrated in Ancient Chinese Sculpture II, Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, Taiwan, 2000, pp. 94-7, nos. 37 and 38. In the end, Salomon pursued a different career path which was nonetheless inspired by his early passion, and began to design decorative objects himself, while his love for Asian and Buddhist art lasted his entire life.Condition: Good condition, as expected and commensurate with age, with wear and casting flaws, minor losses, small nicks, warping, dents, few structural cracks, extensive wear and flaking to lacquer gilding. Fine, naturally grown patina with a good, unctuous feel overall.Weight: 52.9 kg Dimensions: Height 67 cmThis rare bronze sculpture of an arhat depicts the monk seated in meditation with his right hand extending towards the ground to call on the Earth to bear witness to his enlightenment. An arhat in Theravada Buddhism, which predominates throughout Southeast Asia, represents the spiritual paradigm for ordinary beings to emulate. The highest spiritual goal for followers of Theravada Buddhism is to perfect Shakyamuni's teachings over many lifetimes, which results in becoming an arhat: an enlightened being freed from the cycle of rebirth (parinirvana).Paintings and sculptures of arhats frequent Thai temples. Their depiction largely imitates Buddha images, though without possessing certain key physical characteristics (lakshana) that distinguish Buddha as a supernatural being. As represented in this sculpture, these are the absence of an ushnisha and the orientation of the arhat's left hand. Rather than the back of the hand resting in his lap, it is turned frontally toward the viewer.Auction result comparison: Compare a related copper alloy figure of an arhat, 83 cm high, also dated 16th-17th century, at Bonhams New York in Indian, Himalayan & Southeast Asian Art on 23 September 2020, lot 638, sold for USD 47,575.

A SILVER WIRE-INLAID BRONZE FIGURE OF A QILIN, ATTRIBUTED TO SHISOU, QING DYNASTYChina, 1644-1912. Finely cast seated on its haunches, the front legs braced, the head with sharply cast, elegantly curved antlers, large ears, bulging eyes, a ruyi-shaped nose, the mouth open revealing teeth, sharp fangs, and tongue. The furcated tail curling to one side, the spine neatly articulated.Provenance: From a private collection in northern Germany, acquired before 2000.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and casting flaws, few losses to inlays, occasional light scratches, few minuscule nicks. Fine, naturally grown, dark patina.Weight: 2,439 g (incl. base)Dimensions: Height 18 cm (excl. base) and 19 cm (incl. base)The bronze is finely inlaid with silver wire to depict the wavy fur, spirals to the spine and head, and a scroll design to the collar. The beast wears a collar around its neck attached with two small double-gourds and a drop-shaped ornament as well as a loop to the back.Mounted to a modern base.Little is known about the historical figure Shisou. The earliest reference in the Zhongguo meishujia renming cidian ('Dictionary of Chinese Artists') comes from the Luochuang xiaodu and is presumably from the same source as published in Zhongguo yishujia zhenglue ('Brief Introduction of Chinese Artists'). Shisou is listed there only as a late Ming dynasty monk without any further biographical information. A number of vessels and sculptures from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century bear his name, sometimes in combination with a hall name, Jinyu tang ('Hall of Prosperity'). Although the present piece is unsigned, the high quality of the casting and intricate silver-wire inlays make an attribution to Shisou or a related workshop more than reasonable.Auction result comparison: Compare a related bronze lion-form censer, with similar silver-inlaid wavy fur and spirals to the spine, also dated to the Qing dynasty (50.2 cm high), at Christie's Hong Kong in Important Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art on 30 November 2016, lot 3246, sold for HKD 300,000. Important Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art 2016年11月30日 lot 3246, 售價HKD 300,000。
