Sir Kyffin Williams KBE., RA (1918-2006) - Patagonian landscape with trees and a field in the foreground, mountains beyond, signed with the artist's initials, oil on board woven sacking/canvas, 20" x 30" *This picture is accompanied by a letter from the artist dated 13th March 1981 from his address at Pwllfanogl, Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, Gwynedd, LL61 6PD, also a Christmas card from the artist, with the artist's signature 'Kyffin', the card depicting Welsh shepherd. The picture is reputed to have been a gift from the artist to his godson. The artist was born at Llangefni, Anglesey and is widely regarded as the defining artist of Wales during the 20th century. As a young man his dreams of becoming a soldier were dashed because of his epilepsy. He studied art at the Slade, he also attended Shrewsbury school and in 1944 he became a teacher at Highgate school in London, where he remained until 1973, by which time he was an artist of great renown. He was an Honorary Fellow of the University of Wales Colleges, Swansea, Bangor and Aberystwyth. He was knighted in 1999. He painted at least two works per week but said that "I paint for kicks rather like Van Gogh painted for kicks, excitement, maybe if you are an epileptic you crave excitement". His turbulent inner life is reflected in the heavy oils he applied with a palette knife and in the dark sombre mountains he portrayed. He claimed to have no idea why collectors paid tens of thousands of pounds for his work. His life was one that was dedicated to his landscape and to its people. *Subject to Artist's Resale Rights Law
