Steve Howlett (b. 1953), three carved wood vessels, with broad flared rims, all with incised signature to base, the largest with shallow bowl, 38cm diameter, another with cylindrical foot, 26.5cm wide, another similar 15cm wide Descended from a long line of woodworkers, Steve Howlett creates organic sculptural shapes out of wood. Howlett's work is collected worldwide and has been acquired by various institutions including the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, and the Hosomi Museum and Art Foundation in Kyoto, Japan.

†Kate Malone, MBE (b. 1959), Nuts and Berries, a ceramic framed mirror, with polychrome glaze applied with fruit and berries, with a pineapple crest, signed to the back, 65.5 x 55.5cm Kate Malone trained at Bristol Polytechnic and subsequently attended the Royal College of Art. Her organic pottery, inspired by the irregular forms of nature, is regularly sold at auction, and is represented in national and international collections including Manchester Art Gallery, The Ashmolean Museum, the Musée national de céramique de Sèvres in France and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Ï’Andrew Varah (1944-2012), Umbrella Men, a surrealist three door gentleman's wardrobe, designed in 1989, each hinged door modelled as a gentleman's knee-length overcoat and boots, the central figure with a peg leg, hanging on a clothes hanger, each with an umbrella, the handle forming the door-handle of the wardrobe, internally fitted with two low drawers, low foot bar, mixed exotic veneers, comprising: Brazilian rosewood, pressure dyed tabu, satinwood, oak and burr oak, metal door furniture, stamped to metal furniture AV and paper label to reverse of each cabinet, 207cm high, 201cm wide, 42.5cm deep Provenance: Woolley & Wallis, 20th April 2016, lot 1499; Lamberty Art & Design, selected items from the storages.Varah produced around five variations of the Umbrella Men wardrobe between 1987 and 2003, each example is unique. Clementina van der Walt, a large ceramic vase of abstract form, with painted and printed design, signed and dated 1992, 35cm high; together with another similar two handled vase and two mask series drinking vessels with incised marks and dated 2002 and 2003, 12.5cm and 9.5cm high (4) Clementina van der Walt was educated in Jerusalem and Johannesburg, and, in her own words, 'seeks the sacred in the ordinary' with her pottery. Her works, which take inspiration from the African landscape, are held by international collections including the South African Presidential Collections, Johannesburg Art Gallery, the Museum of Modern Ceramics Art, Japan and the Yingge Ceramics Museum, Taiwan.
†Michael Flynn (b. 1947), Charging elephant, terracotta, 35.5cm high 65cm long 20cm wide Michael Flynn trained at Cardiff College of Art, and draws inspiration from various sources, from Meissen figurines to abstract expressionism. His joyful figurative ceramics are represented in museums across Britain, Europe and the United States, including London's Victoria & Albert Museum and the National Gallery of Wales. Hubert le Gall (French, b. 1961), Youyou Sous Les Etoiles, a bronze gueridon, with a stylised cloud top, limited edition 3 of 8, signed, 63cm high, 48cm wide It was not until Lyon-born designer Hubert le Gall was 25 that he decided to abandon his finance studies and follow his passion for making art. Though playful and poetic in nature, the French designer's sculptural creations are always functional. Inspired by all-encompassing 'total art' movements such as the Arts and Crafts movement in Britain, Le Gall aims to tell stories through usable objects. His designs, often inspired by nature and the animal kingdom, are exhibited internationally, including during a recent retrospective at Twenty First Gallery in Tribeca, New York. A monograph of the designer written by art historian Jean-Louis Gaillemin was published by Editions Norma, 2016. Another gueridon by Le Gall was recently sold at Tajan, Design, 4 June 2019, Lot 152
λ Hans Hartung (German-French, 1904-1989), The Nazareth Tapestry, circa 1965, a woollen wall handing, signed in the field, labelled, 220cm x 165cm Provenance: previously sold at CRN Auctions, 19 May 2013, lot 189; Lamberty Art & Design, selected items from the storages.Hans Hartung was born in Leipzig, and studied at the art academy of his home city, and later at the academy of Dresden. After serving in the French Foreign Legion (and losing one of his legs) during the Second World War he settled in Paris, where he spent most of his career. Hartung is considered a seminal figure in the Art Informel movement, alongside Karel Appel and Jean Dubuffet, who sought to move abstraction away from regulated forms and processes. Known for his varied methods, including applying paint with unusual tools such as rakes and branches, Hartung embraced the unexpected. The present lot, with its gestural, almost calligraphic strokes, showcases Hartung's longstanding interest in irrationality, spontaneity, and irregular form. Hartung's works have been exhibited at the Guggenheim and Metropolitan Museum, New York, the Musée national d'art Moderne, Paris, and Tate, London among others.
