*** Please note, the description of this lot has changed ***Wilde (Oscar) Echoes. Tales originally related by Oscar Wilde, to Gabrielle Enthoven, and afterwards recorded by her, press clipping laid down to rear pastedown, original wrappers, upper cover with book label lower corner 'Hallam Fordham', upper cover worn through at staples, [c.1948]; and a photograph of Gabrielle Enthoven, corners stuck down onto board, loosely inserted, v.s. (2)⁂ 'The Poet'; 'The Actress'; 'Simon of Cyrene' and 'Jezabel'. Gabrielle Enthoven (1868-1950) knew Oscar Wilde, visiting him as a young girl, after which she purportedly would return home and copy down the stories he had told her. At some point she had a few copies (c.5 or 6) printed, giving one to the British Library in 1948. This present copy is known to be 3cm longer than that in the BL and in wrappers of a different colour. The same stories, however, also appeared in 'The Mask: A Quarterly Journal of the Art of the Theatre' (1912), and were reported as recounted to Aimée Lowther, also a young friend of Wilde's, who similarly recorded them for posterity. It is possible the same stories were told to both young women.

DeMille (Cecil B., film producer and director, 1881-1959) 10 Typed Letters signed to Fortunino Matania (Italian artist, 1881-1963), together 23pp. 4to, Paramount Pictures Corporation, 24th July, 1953 - 18th November, 1957, discussing paintings commissioned to help in the development of the 1956 film The Ten Commandments, debating historical accuracy "We have been unable to find any satisfactory evidence of cloaks or capes worn by the Egyptians. It is impossible to believe that they never used them...", the depiction of 'The Orgy of the Golden Calf' "It must have been an abominable and shameless debauch - all restraint and prohibition must have been abandoned... the very sight of which goaded Moses into ordering three thousand of his people put to the sword.", allaying concerns around censorship of Matania's depictions of nudity "I have no fears that you might overstep the fine line between pornography and good taste... If by chance you do find that one of your prominent figures seems to be too nude, the judicious use of smoke from an incense burner, a torch or a camp fire might be useful." and thanking Matania for the use and influence of his paintings "It would have given me pleasure to tell you in person of the contribution you made to THE TEN COMMANDMENTS through your inspirational paintings", folds; and c.40 others, including 2 telegrams from DeMille "Painting arrived safely stop it is very fine you are a great artist stop", typed letters signed from DeMille's assistants, copies of correspondence etc., and a copy of Drawing from History, the Forgotten Art of Fortunino Matania, v.s. v.d. (c.50)⁂ A superb archive of correspondence that demonstrate the impressive endeavours by DeMille in his pursuit of historical accuracy and mood for what became his most successful film. DeMille commissioned a series of paintings by Matania to provide visual inspiration for the film and the director and artist exchanged thoughts on the images with the artist altering his paintings based on DeMille's notes and the director in turn altering the composition of the scenes in the film based on Matania's paintings.

Lull (Ramòn) and Bernard de Lavinheta (editor), Ars Magna Generalis et Ultima, title and A4 in red and black, title and final page with woodcut printer's device, woodcut folding plate, woodcut initials and diagrams, ink ownership inscriptions to title, small paper restoration to blank margin of title with slight loss of woodcut border, small marginal paper restorations to A2 and C8, C18th German boards, gilt spine with label, extremities scuffed, [Palau 143693; Rogent & Duran 65; Tomash L142], 4to, Lyon, Symon Vincent, [1517].⁂ Third edition, the first edited by the Lullist Bernard de Lavinheta, of Lull's greatest work. Lull invented an 'art of finding truth' which inspired Leibniz's dream of a universal algebra four centuries later. The most distinctive characteristic of his Art is its combinatory nature, which led to both the use of complex semi-mechanical techniques that sometimes required figures with separately revolving concentric wheels - 'volvelles' - and also to the symbolic notation of its alphabet. These features justify its classification among the forerunners of both modern symbolic logic and computer science. The Art's function as a means of unifying all knowledge into a single system remained viable throughout the Renaissance and well into the seventeenth century. RBH lists only 4 copies of this edition in the last 50 years. Provenance: 'Josephi Trivellini, Veneti [Venice]' (inscription to title). Dr. Franz Jachimowicz (medical doctor, Vienna C19th; inscription to title)

Two years after the highly successful appearance of Waghenaer's Spieghel der Zeevaerdt Lord Charles Howard of Effingham, Lord Admiral of England, drew the attention of Her Majesty's Privy Council to Waghenaer's sea-atlas, and suggested that it was the answer to a long-felt want. Shortly thereafter it was "esteemed by the chief personages of the grave counsell worthy to be translated and printed into a language familiar to all nations." One Anthony Ashley was commissioned to translate the text and place names; the charts, entirely re-engraved, are among the earliest copper plates made in England. ['World Encompassed', Baltimore Museum of Art, 1952, cat. No. 182]. Wilde (Oscar) The Sphinx, first edition, one of 200 copies, printed in green, red and black, illustrations by Charles Ricketts, bookplate to pastedown of R.H.S. Truell, original vellum, gilt, with designs by Charles Ricketts, 4to, Elkin Mathews and John Lane, The Bodley Head, 1894.⁂ A fine copy with no bowing of the covers of one of the landmarks of 1890s book production, overseen at the author's request by his friend the artist and typographer Charles Ricketts. Ricketts considered the designs for the illustrations and for the binding amongst his best illustrative work. The Pall Mall Budget reviewed, "The vellum binding, the various symbolic designs, the quaint rubicated initials and the general arrangement of the text, all by Mr Ricketts' sympathetic art, are most subtly infused by the spirit of the poem. The designs on the cover are particularly striking, and Mr Ricketts has never made a lovelier thing than the group of maidens clustering round "the moon horned Io" as she weeps." (21 June, 1894).

Astronomy.- Wing (John, surveyor and almanac maker, of Pickworth, Rutland, nephew of Vincent Wing, astronomer, astrologer, and land surveyor, 1619-68, bap. 1662, d. 1726) Scientia Stellarum. Calculations and Observations Compared Proving the Excellent agreement of these tables with the Heavens at all times Especially in this Age As the observations... plainly demonstrates as I Received them from the hands of that unparallel'd observator Mr John Flamsteed, and are here exposed with their Calculations..., [taken from additional title at end], 3 parts in 1, manuscript text and tables, together c. 247pp., mostly in 1 hand, signature at beginning of "Thomas Waring" and a few additional notes and calculations at beginning and end in two other hands, ?lacks 2ff. at beginning (?general title), 2ff. blanks with notes loose, some other ff. working loose, browned, original calf, some slight surface wear, rubbed and creased, 8vo, dated in text 1693.⁂ "... that unparallel'd observator Mr Flamsteed."Comprising: the first part text, second part "A Table of Logistical Logarithms", and third part "Scientia Stellarum Containing New Astronomical Tables For the Attaining of the true Longitude & Latitude of the Planets... ."Dated in text to 1693 Scientia Stellarum was published as a supplement to John Wing's Art of Surveying, a new version of his uncle Vincent Wing's work of the same name. In terms of dating this manuscript, there are several examples designed to aid study of the stars by calculating astronomical events which will occur in 1694. The calculations in another hand at end date from 1701 to 1732 while not by Wing, must have some connection as one of the calculations relates to the latitude of Pickworth, the home of John Wing. The printed text and this manuscript generally conform, with very similar chapter headings, but with some differences in phrasing and paragraphs. The manuscript runs to Chapter 13, the printed work stops at Chapter 11. There follows c. 100 pages of of tables of logarithms, which do not appear to correlate to those in the printed book.Scientia Stellarum, a reworking of Wing's abandoned Astronomia nova Britannica which he "published despite John Flamsteed's warning that it was itself full of crude errors." - Oxford DNB.

China, Beijing. "April 4 1910. Yesterday Capt. Fitz Hugh fetched us in a motor and took Lambert, Sis, and myself out to the Wan-Shou-ssu Temple, where the Imperial family rest on their way to the Summer Palace... . In 1900 the Germans looted this temple, and all the ornaments are quite new and it has been repainted, which makes it glaring, but it is very prettily designed and there is a lovely rock garden!"Tibet, Lhasa. "The Potala is a huge square building, topping a little conical hill, with a dozen or so of smaller ones on the slopes below, all flat topped and dotted with blind window arches like the one at the Ta Fo Sau. There is a fine mellow massiveness about the whole design of great square blocks set in the clustering darkness of fine trees. The bell sounded for prayers... and Lamas of all ages came pouring up, clad in all shades of yellow... many in most undignified haste robing as they ran. They filed into a small side temple and squatted in rows... while the head priest in a glorious red cloak, mellow with age marked time with a bell. Then the chief priest came and talked to us and allowed us to photograph him in his cloak, with a wonderful tasselled ornament hanging down his back, he was very friendly and much interested."Japan. Nihongami. "After we'd done bowing and smiling... I was escorted upstairs to unrobe, and when I came down in my cotton kimono, there was quite a crowd waiting... . It was a drastic process. I don't wonder Jap ladies sleep on a wooden pillow and only have it done once a week... . Then they applied oil and stuff that looked like cobbler's wax and I quailed but endured... the hairdresser-in-chief shooed away her assistants and set to work in real earnest. She scraped me and combed me and tied my unhappy hair with bits of gut, pulled taut with her teeth and she tied on a long tail of black hair and no end of pads.
