William Gear (Scottish, 1915-1997), Landscape Unit, signed and dated `85, titled on verso, oil on canvas, 60 x 45cm.; 23.75 x 17.75in. * Studied painting at Edinburgh College of Art, 1932-7 and the Edinburgh University Fine Art Class 1936-7, his teachers including William Gillies and John Maxwell. After study in Paris with Fernand Leger in 1937 he travelled in Italy and the Balkans area on the strength of a scholarship. He was appointed head of the faculty of fine art in Birmingham College of Art in 1964; guest lecturer at National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne and University of Western Australia, Perth, in 1966; and in 1975 won the Lorne Fellowship and retired as head of the department of fine art at Birmingham Polytechnic. Gear made a significant contribution to European painting through his association with the COBRA group in the immediate post-war years. Fifty year retrospective at the Redfern Gallery, 1997 with another there in 2003. William Gear and COBRA toured from Aberdeen Art Gallery, 1997-98. George W. Jardine (1920-2002), Red Deer, Isle of Arran, signed, with exhibition label inscribed on verso, oil on canvas, 60 x 50cm.; 23.5 x 19.5in. * Born and lived in Wallasey, Cheshire. He attended Wallasey School of Art, 1936, and Royal College of Art, 1939 - 43. From 1944 - 80 he was a lecturer in graphics at Liverpool College of Art. Jardine` s own pictures were early influenced by Indian miniature painting and Surrealism, especially Max Ernst. Jardine also painted many portraits. He showed with Sandon Studios Society and Liverpool Academy, both of which he was a member, the Royal Academy, the Royal Cambrian Academy and elsewhere. Had several solo exhibitions at Portal Gallery; also Williamson Art Gallery, Birkenhead; Bluecoat Gallery, Liverpool; in Belgium and America. Noel Spencer (British, 1900-1986), Banner Cross Woods and Bankside, signed and titled in pencil in the margins, etchings, plate sizes 24 x 18cm.; 9.5 x 7in and 26.5 x 19.5cm.; 10.5 x 7.75in (2). * Noel Spencer was born and raised in Lancashire and studied at the Royal College of Art during the 1920s. For nearly 20 years he was Head of Norwich School of Art, where his memory has been honoured with the annual Noel Spencer Award for Painting. Late 19th century martin style parlour guitar *Provenance: this guitar was brought ashore by one of the sailors rescued from `The Albana`, a three masted sailing ship which was shipwrecked in a storm in December 1894. The guitar was given by the sailor to one of the local residents in thanks for their hospitality to the crew. It was passed by The Headmaster of Cleveleys Primary School where it was used as an object for art studies and, in 1952, it was passed to the grandson of the headmaster who had it completely renovated by Forsyth`s of Manchester and it was regularly played until a few years ago
