Lord Battersea was a patron of James McNeill Whistler and was involved with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Later in the century the bedroom of his London residence was one of the few interiors completed by Carlo Bugatti. Battersea married Contance, daughter of Sir Anthony de Rothschild in 1877 after having met thirteen years previously through his intimate friendship with her cousin, Leopold de Rothschild.
