Firing cracks to approx 1/3 of inner flange of cover, area of sanding 9 by 2.5cm to inside of bowl. Three small scratches to wing of one butterfly, the largest 3mm long
John Smart RSA, RSW, RBA (1741-1811) Scottish "Colonel Maxwell" - head and shoulders portrait, turned to sinister, playing the violin Inscribed and dated 1785, pencil and watercolour, 13cm by 10cm See illustration Provenance: The Fine Art Society Ltd., London, UK, no. 103, April 1964 CONDITION REPORT: Moderate to mildly strong time staining to paper with fairly consistent but subtlety coloured small sized foxing spots across the surface. Of a delicate and muted palette but retains definition and overall strength ( if somewhat tempered by the discolouration to the paper). Vertical cockelling to paper at various points, most evident along the top edge. Not examined out of the frame.

Vertical crease top left hand side and running towards the top the head on the left hand side edge. Light surface dirt and time staining. Good overall colour. Not examined out of the frame.

Paper appears clean in exposed areas. Colour generally strong. The paper has been extended on both the left hand side and right hand side (and has the necessary additional paint work to complete the extension to the sheet). The addition to the right hand side is approx 2-3 mms wide, whereas the addition on the left hand side is approx 0.5cm wide. Evidence of some light cockelling but the work has not been examined out of the frame.

Tiny areas of in filling in the sky upper right hand side and here and there within the rocky outcrop. Cleaned and re-varnished but retains good surface. The panel is exposed / unpainted at the lower sand area. The reverse of the panel is reinforced with latticework. Companion : Cleaned and re-varnished, generally preserved surface. Minor re-touches.

The paint is a slightly thin in places : in the sky, sea, more isolated parts of the foreground. Minor re-touching to some of the outer edges. Very slight bow to the board lower centre.

Re-lined, cleaned and re varnished. Possible strengthening to the signature. Re-touching to top right hand side edge and top right hand side corner, in addition to sporadic darker tones under the arches, railings and figure group and isolated parts of the masonry with a few further retouching dashes in the lower right hand corner. The paint is a little thin and flat in places. Light surface dirt and discoloured varnish. Very isolated patches of fine cracquelure.

An Art Nouveau pendant designed as an entwined snake, the body decorated with blue, green and yellow guilloche enamel, the snake`s mouth opened wide positioned to devour a baroque pearl, length approximately 26.5mm, suspended from a millgrain diamond set pendant loop, a figure-of-eight link and a circular millgrain diamond set circular loop supporting a fancy link neck chain interspersed with six smaller baroque pearls, French gold assay marks and makers mark for Guillemin Frères on the figure of eight loop. French gold assay marks on the jump ring, length of chain 44.5cm, length of pendant including loop 5.5cm.
