John Robert Murray McCheyne R.S.A. (1911-1982): Born in Edinburgh, he was educated at Kirkcaldy High School and later studied at The Edinburgh College Of Art. He was awarded the Chalmers Bursary at The Royal Scottish Academy School and worked under Alexander Carrick. After this he travelled Europe, including Copenhagen, Athens, Florence and Greece, coming back to take-up a position of Master Of Sculpture at Kings College, (now Newcastle University) in 1939. In addition to his role as a teacher he regularly exhibited works and undertook commissions, more notably, including "The Family Group", Shield Field Estate Housing Committee 1959, Newcastle; "Seahorse Heads", Tower of Civic Centre, Newcastle Upon Tyne 1968; "St. Michael" and "Mother and Child", Church Of St. Michael & All Saints, Christchurch New Zealand; "A Water Kelpie", Scottish Pavilion; and exhibited his works at The Royal Scottish Academy Exhibition 1935; Palace Of Arts Exhibition Scotland 1938; The Royal Glasgow Institute Of Fine Arts Annual Exhibition 1951; and his last 'One Man' Exhibition at the Laing Art Gallery 1970. He shows major influences from Henry Moore, as well as Gerhard Hemming. NB: Stephanie Dingle was born in Lancaster, she attended the Warrington School of Art and was a pupil of the iconic Northern artist William Turner (1920-2013).
Pat Cooke (British, 1935-2000) - 'Newplace Garden Stratford-upon-Avon (Shakespeare's house)' Watercolour and gouache, signed and dated April 1980, approx 18x23cm, framed. NB: Pat Cooke first met L. S. Lowry when she was a child, through her father. Lowry later spotted potential in her work and encouraged Pat to attend the Manchester Art School and then London University, and a life long friendship was formed. Over the years Pat and her husband spent a lot of time with Lowry visiting many parts of the UK and Ireland together. Pat's work was bought by the then Prime Minister Harold Wilson and hung at 10 Downing Street. Pat and her husband moved to Knutsford in 1965 where they became popular local figures.

NB: Charlie Shiels was born in Stockport and lived in Manchester. He lectured in art and design at Stockport College of Further Education, later to become Senior Lecturer. Charlie had a one man exhibition at the Blythe in Manchester, the Unicorn Gallery in Chelsea and the Woolff Gallery in Shoreditch, London. Charlie also produced commissioned work for the BBC publications, London Underground (poster design), Corgi books, Marks & Spencer and numerous others. (illustrated)

Provenance: Part of a private collection built up over many years by a Cheshire gentleman, now handed down by descent to the present owner. Of Manchester Ship Canal Interest: An Art Deco silver souvenir presentation cigarette box By Turner & Simpson Ltd., Birmingham 1937 Of tapered rectangular form, with an applied gadrooned rim, engine turned decoration, raised on four canted feet. The lid engraved with the M.S.C ARROW, inside the silver-gilt lid engraved with Edinburgh Castle, inscribed, 'A souvenir of the launch of the M. S. C. "Arrow" presented to Miss Lillian R. Smith, 26th July 1938. Owners: The Manchester Ship Canal Co. Manchester, Builders: Henry Robb Limited, Leith'. Loaded, Height 7cm, Length 23cm, weight combined 2.3 troy oz. N.B. MSC ARROW: The Manchester Ship Canal Company Ltd ordered for a tug to work on the Manchester Ship Canal; she was the third in a long line of tugs to be ordered. The ARROW spent her war years on the canal used as a tug doing her normal towing work but also used as a fire fighting tug, with constant danger of enemy air raids she was kept busy during the spell from 1939 to 1945. She worked constantly on the canal for a total of 34 years before being sold on in 1972. She was sold on to the Malta Tug & Lighter Co, Ltd and she was renamed San Pietru, ten years later she was sold on again to Greek shipping interests and was renamed yet again, then she was finally renamed as ANTEOS C.
