A pair of limited edition 9ct gold brandy goblets. Jack Spencer, retailed by E.W. Payne, Sheffield, 1975. The handmade goblets designed with rounded bowls raised on fluted, spreading circular feet, each foot depicting four significant theatrical characters in relief: Peter Pan, Henry V, Thomas Becket and St Joan (of Arc), numbered 3 and 4 to undersides, in fitted cases signed E.W. Payne to commemorate both the opening of the Churchill Theatre in Bromley and the centenary of Sir Winston Churchill's birth. They were made by Jack Spencer, a Sheffield-based silversmith who studied at Sheffield School of Art before working at Walker & Hall. Jack Spencer also worked with David Mellor, producing prototype cutlery and flatware designs. In 1966 he formed a creative partnership with another Sheffield craftsman, Keith Tyssen, working on commissions including silver flatware and cutlery for Barclays Bank and altar pieces for Churchill College, Cambridge. The limited edition was intended to run to a maximum of 25 goblets but since these pieces were made to order, it is not know whether all 25 were produced. The characters of Thomas Becket, Henry V, Peter Pan and St. Joan were chosen to represent great theatrical parts and playwrights (notably J. M. Barrie, Shakespeare, T.S. Elliot and Bernard Shaw). The Churchill Theatre in Bromley was opened on Bromley High Street by the Prince of Wales in 1977. It still hosts a wide variety of musicals, drama, comedy and dance shows today.
