Norwich School, early-mid-19th century- Rural cottage scene; oil on board, 43x37cm, Note: Stylistically the scene is reminiscent of the self-taught John Chrome along with John Sell Cotman and Joseph Stannard. At a time when the Royal Academy had such command and domination over British art and its patrons; alongside Turner, Constable and other formidable reputations it is The Norwich School`s great achievement that a small group of self-taught working-class artists were able to paint with such vitality there surrounding Norwich, assisted only by meagre local patronage. The majority of their canvases were collected by the industrialist J.J Cotman, of Colmans Mustard fame, scarcely seen outside of there native Norwich and thereafter have been on permanent display in Norwich Castle Museum since the 1880`s.
