An Asprey Swiss made art deco tortoiseshell dressing table clock with a large tortoiseshell jewel box, the silver hinges J & R FL London, a tortoiseshell vanity tray, round powder box, brush, mirror and clothes brush, rouge pots, all in tortoiseshell and with the initial `C`. The pieces were apparently purchased separately every year at Aspreys as birthday and Christmas presents. Minor professional restoration to several pieces. 17 items including nail scissors and buffing pad.
A group of items owned and worn by Elsa Schiaparelli (1890-1973) including her black ostrich suede lined jewellery box by Cross England in its storm cover, the top embossed `E.S.`, her striped and flowered sunglasses, in case, labelled Schiaparelli, case also labelled. She designed glasses of this type in 1950`s. Her long string of red coral beads, a 30`s sun visor type straw hat with attached chiffon scarf, a pair of Schiaparelli pink tousers (she apparently owned many of these in different colours), a pair of chandelier type green and gold Kenneth J. Lane green and gold earrings impressed K.J.L.. Sold with a copy of `Shocking Life`. Schiaparelli. Dent. 1954. Dilys E. Blum. Yale University Press. 2003, published on occasion of the Schiaparelli Exhibition at the Philidelphia Museum of Art. Provenance: The items are owned by the woman who nursed Schiaparelli in her final months and was given the pieces as keepsakes. The lot includes a receipt of the nurses services dated 16.11.1973 at the Rue de Beri. Also copies of obituaries. The Dadists and surrealist painters her main inspiration, Schiaparelli created the most innovative and daring clothes and accessories in the 1930`s. Among the women who wore her clothes were Helena Rubenstein, Duchess of Windsor, Mae West, Greta Garbo, Princess Marina and Katherine Hepburn.
Plaster plaques of the Kings of France, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, George IV, Kings of France, Napoleon, Lord Byron, some classical scenes, contained in a drop front box. Another smaller box and a large drop front box with layers of medallions and large rectangular classical scenes. Similar sets were often collected as souvenirs of the grand tour in the 18th and 19th centuries and were also used in schools of art. Box 1: 86 circular, 6 rectangular. Box 2: 52 round and 2 large round. Box 3: 37 round. All marked and dusty. Mid 19th century

The substantial four pillar triple train movement with Harrison’s maintaining power, deadbeat escapement and mercury jar compensated pendulum, chiming a choice of three melodies on either eight bells or four gongs and striking the hour on a further larger gong, the 14 inch silvered brass break-arch dial with subsidiary seconds dial within applied chapter ring with raised gilt Arabic numerals, the angles with cast brass bird and urn pattern spandrels incorporating subsidiary CHIME/SILENT and WHITTINGTON/CAMBRIDGE/ WESTMINSTER selection dials to the upper pair, the arch with rolling moonphase calibrated for the age of the moon to upper edge and with pair of globe lunettes beneath the upper border with scroll engraved infill, the Art Nouveau influence break-arch case with leafy scroll carved crest above moulded cornice and line-incised border to the glazed dial aperture flanked by foliate carved baluster pillars to hood, the trunk with inverted breakfront ogee moulded throat above rectangular glazed door flanked by triform half-pilasters with globular capitals and foliate bases, the plinth centred with an inverted break-arch panel flanked by swollen acanthus carved uprights to front and sides terminating with a shaped skirt, 259cm (99ins) high.
