Sheila Fell RA, FRSA (1931-1979) ''Man Thinning Turnips'' Signed, inscribed verso, oil on canvas, 25cm by 29.5cm Provenance: Beaux Arts Gallery, London, Nov/Dec 1964, no.29 This work will be included into the forthcoming catalogue rasissoné by Professor Andrew Bradley and Dr Eleanor Bradley Artist's Resale Rights/Droit de Suite may apply to this lot, please refer to our Terms of Business See illustration Born at Aspatria, Cumberland in 1931, Sheila Fell held her first exhibition in 1955, courtesy of Beaux Arts, London. It was here that she met L S Lowry, who purchased a number of paintings from the show and became an avid friend and supporter of her works. Acclaimed by critics, collectors and her peers, she began exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1965, being elected an Associate Member of the Royal Academy in 1969, and a full Member in 1974. Sadly Fell died in 1979, aged just 48 and it is thought that she only painted six or seven hundred paintings in her short lifetime. What makes her works so powerful is her almost unique ability to convey the emotion inherent in a landscape, not just the landscape itself, but the impact it has on you. As Lowry suggested, Sheila Fell was arguably the greatest landscape painter of her age. ''Man Thinning Turnips'' is very characteristic of the artist depicting two figures toiling in an open landscape. The figures stance and earthy tones cause them to become an amalgamation of the landscape itself. The work clearly demonstrates the influences of Fell's contemporaries such as Frank Auerbach whom she befriended at St Martin's School of Art, London. Many of her paintings are held in major public and private collections throughout the UK, including the Tate Gallery, Walker Art Gallery and in the Government Art Collection. With thanks to Castlegate House Gallery, Cockermouth for information relating to Fell's training background and career. Some light surface dirt. Sporadic isolated medium areas of craquelure throughout, in particular, left of signature, bottom edge, centre of left hand side, upper right of sky and to the right of the figures. See images. Canvas slightly loose on stretcher causing it to buckle slightly. Brush bristle upper right of sky. Not examined with a uv light.
Peter Brook RBA (1927-2009) ''Bolton Bridge'' Signed and inscribed, oil on canvas, 50cm by 75cm Artist's Resale Rights/Droit de Suite may apply to this lot, please refer to our Terms of Business See illustration ''You have to get a feeling for a person or a place before you can paint them. You have to get to know them. It's not until you impregnate yourself, saturate yourself in the qualities of a place that you can paint it well.'' Peter Brook This maxim clearly resonates in the West Yorkshire born artist's stark depictions of the Yorkshire Pennines, moors, and mills. Infused with the artist's personality, his signature taglines and the appearance of his trusty sheepdog. A farmer's son, Peter Brook grew up in West Yorkshire where he spent most of his life. He was educated at Barnsley Grammar School before moving on to teacher training at Goldsmiths College, London, where he visited galleries, attended life drawing evening classes and further developed his art, alongside his teaching career back in Yorkshire. It wasn't until his 40's that he became a full-time artist, being elected as a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1962. He was represented by Agnews in London where he held a number of solo shows, whilst also exhibiting in America and Australia. His works can be seen in the V&A, the Tate, Wakefield Art Gallery, Leeds City Art Gallery, Leeds University & Spring Ram PLC and in major private collections worldwide. Overall framed dimensions 62.5cm by 88.5cm Covered in a layer of surface dirt and discoloured varnish. The odd brush bristle trapped within the paint. Canvas slightly buckling lower right corner. Patch to centre of the sky approx 2cm with a small scratch and associated paint loss. Very slight push mark to sky right of centre.

Graham Ibbeson MA (b.1951) ''William Webb Ellis'' Signed and numbered 2/40, bronze on a slate base, 40.5cm high Sold together with a copy of ''Graham Ibbeson - The People's Sculptor - Bronze, Clay and Life'' by John Threlkeld with Graham Ibbeson, 2011 and certificate of authenticity Born in Barnsley, South Yorkshire Graham Ibbeson has been a professional sculptor since graduating from the Royal College of Art in 1978. He has developed an international reputation exhibiting in galleries throughout Europe, the USA, and Asia as well as his work being held in many private and public collections. Ibbeson's ability to capture the essence of a character with warmth and humanity sets him apart from many other sculptors as seen here in his depiction of William Webb Ellis, the inventor of rugby football while a pupil at Rugby School, modelled on his own son. According to legend, Webb Ellis picked up the ball and ran with it during a school football match in 1823 thus creating the ''rugby'' style of play. The founder's name was given to the trophy awarded to the winners of the Rugby World Cup. In September 1997 and a splendid statue by Ibbeson was unveiled outside Rugby School. See illustration
