Perhaps Chinese Ming Dynasty; an Imperial made Chinese under glaze, blue yellow ground dish/saucer, possibly Hongzhi (1488-1505) six character reign mark, with a double circle in blue and of period. Shallow rounded sides, painted in tones of blue on a yellow enamelled ground, centrally painted in blue with a single branch of two five petalled gardenia blooms and a bud, the Cavetto with four sprigs of pomegranate, grape, peach, and a beribboned lotus, within two parallel line boarders, underside with repeat peonies, approx 26-6cms diameter. 4-8cms high, Hongzi dishes of this design can be found in several important museums and private collections around the world, from the Met Museum of Art, New York, The Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities, Stockholm, The British Museum and the Palace Museum Beijing, similar examples sold are; Sotheby's lot 57 Hong Kong 7th April 2011 and Sotheby's Hong Kong Lot 226 8th October 2013, Christies 25th September 2020 lot 1554

He and Sandra Blow were working at the Royal College of Art together in the 1960s and had a personal relationship. Following them splitting up, Sandra Blow gave Irving the painting as a result of this relationship. It had been on display in the family home ever since.Quintessa Art Collection Ltd 2006 label verso (the painting having been later re-framed, along with many other paintings owned by the family).
