London Gazette 26 May 1942: ‘For coolness, skill and enterprise while serving in H.M. Ships Maori, Sikh, and Legion, in a brilliant night action in the Central Mediterranean in which, without hurt or loss to the Royal Navy, two Italian Cruisers and an E-boat were destroyed, and a Torpedo Boat badly damaged.’ The original Recommendation, dated 13 December 1941, states: ‘Director Layer. For coolness, efficiency, and accuracy on this and other occasions. He has set an example of cheerfulness and devotion to duty at all times.’ Ernest Percy Moseling was born in Dover on 21 August 1905, and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy Second Class on 1 March 1921. Advanced to Petty Officer, he was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 25 July 1938, and served during the Second World War initially in H.M.S. Sussex, before transferring to H.M.S. Sikh on 2 June 1940. Moseling was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for his gallantry during the Battle of Cape Bon on the night of 12-13 December 1941, when the Italian cruisers Alberico da Barbarino and Alberto di Guissano, being used as petrol carriers to Bengazi, were spotted by British air reconnaissance and turned back after passing Cape Bon, off the Libyan coast. On their return they were intercepted and sunk by H.M.S. Sikh, H.M.S. Legion, and H.M.S. Maori. In September 1942 H.M.S. Sikh was tasked with supporting the assault landings at Tobruk (Operation Agreement). During the attempts to land the Royal Marines Sikh came under fire from the shore batteries, and sustained major damage. Taken in tow, she sank off the North African coast on 14 September. Taken Prisoner of War, Moseling was held by the Italians, before being repatriated on 31 March 1943, in a 3 way prisoner exchange (Hansard refers). Subsequently posted to H.M.S. Pembroke on 1 April 1943, he was promoted Chief Petty Officer on 27 May 1943, and saw further active service in H.M.S. Troubridge from 10 December 1944 to 12 August 1945. He was shore pensioned on 30 January 1946. Post-War, Moseling served with the Admiralty Constabulary as a Naval Base Fireman. He died in Rochester, Kent, on 2 December 1984. Sold with the recipient’s uniform ribbons and a large quantity of copied research, including a photographic images of the recipient, one whilst a Prisoner of War.

Watson) generally good very fine (6) £180-£220 --- Frederick James Watson was the husband of Caroline Elizabeth Watson, and resided with her at 21 Cathcart Street Lowestoft. Watson served during the Great War as a Deck Hand with the Royal Naval Reserve. He was killed when the dredger Mercurius (operating out of London) hit a mine and sank with the loss of six lives, 28 June 1916. Watson is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial. Frederick Samuel Watson was the son of the above, and was born in Lowestoft in August 1893. He served during the Great War with the 7th Canadian Mounted Rifles in the UK. Private Watson died of influenza, 27 November 1918, and is buried in the Lowestoft (Normanston Drive) Cemetery.

The Battle of Anghiari, after Peter Paul Rubens after Leonardo da Vinci, circa 1657-1666, engraving on laid paper with watermark Initial A, a very good impression of the third (final) state, with narrow margins on three sides, trimmed on the platemark at bottom, in very good, well preserved condition, plate size 450 x 610 mm (17 3/4 × 24 1/16 ins), sheet size 460 x 615 mm, unframedQTY: (1)NOTE:Robert-Dumesmil 44.Edelinck's dramatic engraving depicts the Battle of the Standard, the central section of an ambitious mural by Leonardo commemorating the Florentine victory over the Milanese army during the Battle of Anghiari in 1440, in the Sala del Gran Consiglio (Great Council Hall) of the Palazzo della Signoria in Florence, facing which was another fresco by Michelangelo on the Battle of Cascina. Prior to their execution both Leonardo and Michelangelo's full-scale preparatory cartoons were exhibited and much admired by younger artists and acclaimed by Benvenuto Cellini as a "school for the world" (scuola del mondo). Neither work now exists. Only a few extant autograph sketches and drawings document Leonardo's design, although the battle composition is preserved in later copies such as Rubens' drawing now at the Louvre (from which Edelinck's print is derived), as well as the Ruccellai drawing reproduced in Niccolo Pagni and Giuseppe Bardi's Etruria Pittrice (1791-95).

The upper scene represents the Annunciation, with a kneeling Gabriel on the left and a pious Mary seated on the right with her arms folded across her chest. The figure at the top of the composition is God the Father, sending down the rays of the Holy Spirit. The lower scene depicts the Adoration of the Magi, with the Virgin Mary seated inside the manger with the baby Jesus on her knee and Joseph standing behind her.

With a carved wood display stand. Bowl 20.5cm diam. Good overall condition with no signs of damage or repair. The stand with a glued repair section about 4cm wide.

Of baluster form decorated with rectangular panels and roundels with birds and insects in landscape scenes on an iron red floral scroll ground with bands of geometric patterns, ruyi heads and lingzhi. 'Da Ming Hong Wu' mark to base. 44cm tall.Good overall condition with no signs of damage or repair. Some areas of enamel loss to the decoration around the shoulder.
Maria Martinez (San Ildefonso Pueblo, 1887-1980) and Popovi Da (Antonio Martinez) (San Ildefonso Pueblo, 1923-1971). Blackware ceramic pot with one decorative band. Signed "Martinez" and "Popovi" and dated 6/60 (June 1960) along the underside.Maria Martinez was a member of the San Ildefonso Pueblo in New Mexico. She is credited with the rediscovery of the method for making blackware pottery such as this piece, and received two honorary doctorates for her pottery work. Popovi Da, born Antonio Martinez, was her son.Provenance: From the collection of Frederick and Catherine Asher, Minneapolis, Minnesota.Frederick M. Asher and Catherine E. Asher were prominent scholars in the field of Art History. Both dedicated their lives to the education of students, teaching for many years as professors at the University of Minnesota. They both had a passion for South Asian art, traveling extensively throughout India, Asia, and the Middle East. Selections from their travels and careers as avid art historians are offered in this auction. Light wear and scratching throughout consistent with age and use. There is a network of minute white accretions with several larger accretions throughout.
Armand Point (French, 1860-1932). Oil on board painting depicting figures on horseback riding through a quiet street, 1886. Signed and dated along the lower right. Much of his early works, such as the painting offered here, were Orientalist street scenes inspired by his childhood in Algiers. Point was a founding member of the Salon de la Rose + Croix. He was involved with the Symbolist movement and was additionally deeply moved and influenced by the Italian Renaissance artists Sandro Botticelli and Leonardo da Vinci.Sight; height: 21 1/2 in x width: 36 in. Framed; height: 25 3/4 in x width: 41 1/4 in.Condition: Overall there are no major losses. The colors are bold and bright and the surface is stable. There is craquelure; there are a few spiral cracks.There is wear to the edges with areas of paint loss and chipping to the board.There a few areas with inpainting. There is a minute spot of in-painting to lower left quadrant. There is a horizontal line of inpainting along the front legs of the horse in the center of the painting, measuring approximately 1 1/2 inches. Due to the thick and uneven varnish i is difficult to determine if there are further areas of inpainting or restoration. Wear to the extreme edges of the painting, likely from the rabbet of a previous painting. A newer board has been affixed to the verso. Light wear to the frame.
