* CALUM COLVIN DA MA(RCA) RSA OBE VENUS AND PLUTO cibachrome print, signed verso 39cm x 49cm note: Calum Colvin was born in Glasgow and studied art in Dundee and London, before coming to prominence in the mid-1980s. His early interest in sculpture led him to develop his unique style of `constructed photography`, creating small sets from everyday objects to resemble domestic interiors. More recently he has used digital technology to generate images that often ask uneasy questions about what makes one truly Scottish. He has exhibited extensively in Europe and the United States and has worked on a number of commissions by the National Galleries of Scotland. His work is held in numerous collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Museum of Fine Art, Houston; The Victoria and Albert Museum, London and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh. Africa - Cunha Moraes, J. A. daAfrica occidental, album photographico e descriptivo. Lisbon: David Corazzi,1885-1888. Oblong 4to, 4 volumes, map and 157 plates only (of 160) original green cloth gilt, gilt endpapers and edges, a little rubbing and dust-soiling to covers, corners a little bumped, some hinges weak or detached from text block, occasionally repaired with Selotape, some very slight spotting (4)Notes: Cunha Moraes`s series, Africa Occidental is an example of anthropological photography in Portuguese-speaking Africa in the second half of the nineteenth century. Moraes has been dubbed, "...one of the earliest outstanding photographers in Angola..." [Dias] and was a successor of the Moraes family photographic firm established in Luanda in the 1860s. Africa Occidental was first published in monthly installments from 1882, before being compiled into these four volumes by Lisbon publisher David Corazzi between 1885 and 1888. Cunha Moraes`s aim was to show interesting anthropological studies of Lunada`s daily life, in order to attract more Portuguese settlers to the area. Indeed, the work is dedicated to Portuguese explorers and is possibly the first study to, "...explicitly...document through individual portraits the social and racial contrasts within Luanda`s daily life..." [Dias, Jill R. Photographic Sources for the History of Portuguese-Speaking Africa, 1870-1914]Volume 3 is probably lacking three plates. ABPC lists an edition as incomplete, having `159 plates only`.

Lot 56

Lot 88

Together with Almerico Da Schio (1836-1930) Italian Pioneer Aviator and Scientist, designer of Italy's first airship. A.L.S., Almerico da Schio, on one side of a postcard, Schio, 7th July 1906, to Raffaele Simboli, in Italian. Schio writes, in full, 'The photographs that I could perhaps send you are naturally of something rather antiquated. I am trying out some new experiments, which I hope will be far more effective. Also, the look of the basket for the balloon has changed considerably. After August and September, it will be worth looking at - just like my portrait, perhaps. Couches may be worth experimenting with, I believe, depending on the overall width.' An interesting letter for its references to his development of airships. A very light postal cancellation only just affects Schio's signature, also including a rare vintage postcard photograph depicting a balloon being pulled by a large group of men, individually signed to the verso by five French Pioneer military aviators, all pilots of dirigible balloons, Captain Miant, Captain Izard, Captain Patart, Lieutenant Hennequin and Captain Albert Eteve. All have signed in fountain pen ink with their names alone. About VG to VG, 4 Albert Eteve (1880-1976) French Pioneer Aviator, earned his free balloon pilot license in 1907 and in February 1910 he earned his dirigible balloon pilots license. Later that year, in June 1910, he was granted his airplane license. Eteve flew the first airplane delivered to the French Air Force and became Inspector General of Aeronautics.
