Wolfson's painterly approach is suited and used to great effect when painting Landscape or Seascapes. But she is equally at home producing beautiful Still Life paintings. For the last 30 years she spent time on the tiny island of Easdale on Scotland's west coast. ITALIAN SCHOOL, ATTRIBUTED TO MICHELE ROCCA (1671-1751) Madonna and Child Oil on canvas, 60 x 69cm Originally from Parma, where Correggio was a primary influence, Michele Rocca traveled to Rome in 1682 and trained under a follower of Pietro da Cortona. Five years later he was back in Parma, but by 1695 he had returned to Rome. Rome's artistic environment provided Rocca with the major elements of his style. Under Sebastiano Conca's influence, Rocca painted works that are often mistaken for Conca's. Conca’s elegant, sweet manner also inspired Rocca; through him, Rocca may have met French painters working in Rome and by the 1720s Rocca's paintings displayed the languorous eroticism and fashionable chic of the French Rococo. His Clemency of Scipio (c. 1720; Rome, Private Collection) relies heavily on Conca’s Antony and Cleopatra, while the shared dimensions of the two paintings (87×135 cm) have suggested to some that they were executed as pendants. In 1710 Rocca was elected to the Congregazione dei Virtuosi al Pantheon, and about the same time he executed two of his best-known paintings: the Toilet of Venus (Providence, Museum of Art) and the Finding of Moses (Univeristy of Chicago, Smart Museum of Art). These are among the finest of the small-scale, semi-precious cabinet pictures of mythological and hagiographical subjects that dominate Rocca’s oeuvre and gained for him the reputation of being a petit maître in early 18th-century Rome. Their decorative rarity, luminous pigmentation and rich painterly effects betray the fundamentally sensual nature of Rocca’s style and clearly suggest that his artistic vision was in some ways more closely aligned with the emerging French Rococo than with the neo-Baroque style of his contemporary Roman colleagues. Works by Rocca are represented in the following collections: J Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles; Louvre, Paris; Museu de Arte de Sao Paolo; Smart Museum of Art, University of Chicago, amongst others.

2nd-3rd century AD. An iron dagger blade (pugio), with a flat tang, the blade squat and waisted, shallow midrib with side channels. See Casprini, F., Saliola, M., Pugio gladius brevis est, storia e tecnologia del pugnale da guerra romano, Roma, 2012, fig.1/8 p.17, 1/12 p.20m and especially fig.21, p.104, specimen from Poetavonium, Museum of Zamora and no.45, p.106. 112 grams, 26.5cm (10 1/2"). Property of a gentleman from Vienna; from his private collection formed since 1970. The pugio (dagger) was the short weapon of offence of the Roman miles, also famous for being the weapon with which Julius Caesar was killed, and it represents the second most characteristic weapon of the Imperial Roman legionary after the gladius. It often had a waisted blade, in the shape of a weeping willow leaf, with a variation in the form which has over time more or less emphasised its characteristics. This specimen seems to belong to the period III of the Saliola-Casprini classification. [No Reserve] For this specific lot, 5% import VAT is applicable on the hammer price Fine condition.

1959 Triumph TR3A RoadsterRegistration no. 1920 DAChassis no. TS550710Engine no. TS55105EOdometer reading: TBCMOT: Exempt*Fully matching numbers*Formerly part of a large private collection in Ireland*Present ownership for the last four yearsFootnotes:Simply constructed, practical to own and offering 100mph-plus performance at a bargain price, the Triumph TR2 was an enormous success both at home and abroad so it was only to be expected that its successor would represent evolution rather than revolution. Introduced in October 1955, the TR3 was indeed little different from the TR2; changes to the Standard Vanguard-derived 2.0-litre engine boosted power from 90 to 95bhp but the most obvious difference was the adoption of an 'egg box' radiator grille. By mid-1956 the engine developed 100bhp courtesy of a new cylinder head; then, in August, Girling front disc brakes and the stronger Phase III Vanguard rear axle were standardised. Cosmetically revised but mechanically indistinguishable, the TR3A was phased in during 1957. New front-end styling featured a full-width grille incorporating sidelights/indicators, and for the first time there were locking door and boot handles plus an improved interior. This original UK-delivered TR3A comes with a Heritage Certificate confirming its matching numbers and the original registration number. Overdrive, wire wheels, a stainless steel exhaust, and full weather equipment are notable features of a car that has had only four owners and 49,000 miles from new. The Triumph spent many years in a large private collection in Dublin before its purchase by the vendor four years ago.
