A Castelli D'Abruzzo maiolica blue-ground dish (piatto 'alla Turchina') from the Cardinal Farnese service, last quarter 16th century, typically decorated in white and ochre enamels and gilt with the Farnese Arms beneath galero suspending tassles, 18cm diameterCardinal Alessandro Farnese (1520-89) is thought to have ordered the service referred to as 'alla Turchina' from Castelli sometime between 1574 and his death in 1589. It appears as ''servitio da credenza di maiolica turchina miniata d'oro con arme del S.r cardinale Farnese'' in the inventories of the Palazzo Farnese in Rome in 1643 and 1653. Other contemporaneous copies of the Farnese service also exist. There are two more elaborate plates bearing the date 1574 to be found in the Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte. The attribution of Castelli is generally based on these two plates and excavations of blue-ground material in Abruzzo.Cf. T. Wilson/E. Basilio Sancho de Santa Justa y Rufina (1728-1788) nominated Archbishop of Manila in 1766. He found himself in conflict with the Jesuits, until their expulsion in 1788, as well as with the administration of Governor Raón and his commissioner Basaraz, who were both later accused of negligence in their political duties and dismissed. The Archbishop undertook a number of inspection tours in 1773-1775 to counter the friars' accusations that the native clergy lacked intellectual acumen and sufficient training. The resistance of the Catholic Church to the appointment of Filipino priests was based more on race than on their fitness for office. The resentment of the Filipino priests finally gave rise to the Gomburza movement in 1872, and subsequently the secularisation issue became a major factor in the Revolution of 1896.

RICHARD COCKLE LUCAS (BRITISH 1800-1883) WAX BUST OF A GENTLEMAN signed R.C. LUCAS, with an indistinct inscription, raised on a turned and ebonised pedestal and plinth base (Bust 17cm high; overall 40cm) Footnote: Provenance: The Earls of Crawford and Balcarres, Balcarres House, Fife, Scotland Literature : Gunnis, Rupert Forbes A Biographical Dictionary of sculptors in Britain 1660 -1851 , Odhams Press 1953. Note: Born in Winchester, Hampshire, Richard Cockle Lucas discovered his talent as sculptor at the age of twelve, when he was tasked with carving knife handles as an apprentice to his uncle, a cutler. After joining the Royal Academy in 1828, Lucas quickly gained prominence as a sculptor of portraits and medallions, predominantly in wax, marble and ivory. However, he is also noted for his large-scale models of the Elgin Marbles, acquired by the British Museum and much admired today. An eccentric character, Lucas was posthumously placed at the centre of controversy after his son claimed that the Bust of Flora , by Leonardo da Vinci according to the Kaiser Friedrich Museum in Berlin, was in fact by the hand of his father. Lucas detailed how his father conducted such work, by building up layers of wax from old candle ends, before stuffing the hollow centre with fabric rags and debris to stabilise it. Much dubiety still exists, although it is generally thought that Lucas worked on the piece at some stage to restore it, a testament to his skill and reputation as one of the leading British sculptors of the nineteenth century.
