Taschenuhr: technisch hochinteressantes Chronometer, "Sternzeit" Reid & Sons Newcastle 1864: Ca.Ø52mm, ca. 138g, solides Silbergehäuse, Hallmarks London 1864, originales Watchpaper, signiert John Reid, extrem seltenes Chronometerwerk "Sternzeitchronometer No. 500", Feder-Chronometerhemmung, Goldschrauben-Chronometerunruh, Zylindrische Spirale, Diamantdeckstein, Schlüsselaufzug, signiert, No.500, originales Emaillezifferblatt, ebenfalls signiert und nummeriert No.500, gebläute Stahlzeiger, funktionstüchtig, extrem selten. Nur sehr wenige Taschenchronometer waren sogenannte "Sternzeitchronometer". Die Sternzeit ist ebenfalls eine wahre Zeit, aber im Gegensatz zur Sonnenzeit allein von der Erddrehung abhängig. In jedem astronomischen Observatorium gibt es eine auf Sternzeit regulierte Pendeluhr oder ein Sternzeitchronometer, sodass die Sternzeit dort stets ablesbar ist. Pendeluhren oder Chronometer in Sternzeit zu regulieren, ist Aufgabe von Chronometermachern oder Spezialisten, da elektronische Messgeräte dafür nicht verwendbar sind. Ein Sterntag hat die Länge einer Erddrehung, gemessen von einer Kulmination eines Sterns bis zur nächsten. Er ist im Wesentlichen an allen Tagen des Jahres gleich lang; es bestehen lediglich geringe Einflüsse der Nutation und der Präzession, die aber nur für Astronomen Bedeutung haben. Ein Sterntag ist 23 h 56 min 3,44 s lang, er ist also 3 min 56,56 s kürzer als ein mittlerer Sonnentag. Das Sternjahr hat 366,2422 Sterntage, einen Tag mehr als ein Sonnenjahr. Ø 49mm, ca. 86g, Goldsavonnette mit frühem Kronenaufzug, guillochiert, Gehäusenummer 24843 (entsprechend dem Nummernsystem von Patek Philippe um 1865), sehr seltenes Kaliber mit typischer Anordnung der wolfsverzahnten Aufzugsräder, Zylinderhemmung, Viertelstunden-Repetition, signiert Patek et Comp. No. 3756, Champlevezifferblatt und Stahlzeiger, Box signiert A. Cairelli Roma Consessionario Patek Philippe & Cie. Die Uhr gehört zu den frühesten Patek Philippe Taschenuhren mit Kronenaufzug und Komplikation. Zifferblatt und Zeiger sind nicht mehr original. Das Werk ist vollständig, das Schlagwerk ebenso. Navigationsuhr: Longines Rarität, Siderograph "Aero" Marine Nationale Aeronotique Navale mit Double-Split Chronograph, No.6425246, Ref.6081, ca.1939/40: Ca. Ø94mm, ca. 545g, Aluminium/Stahlhäuse, verschraubt, rückseitig komplett signiert und nummeriert, high end Präzisionskaliber 21.29, versilbertes zweifarbiges Zifferblatt, ebenfalls signiert und nummeriert, Gangreserve-Anzeige, 3 zentrale Sekundenzeiger, davon 2 Schleppzeiger, funktionstüchtig und in sehr gutem Zustand, absolute Rarität. Die Schwesteruhr 6425248 wurde 2004 in Genf versteigert und erzielte 28.680 Schweizer Franken (Quelle: https://www.cortrie.de/go/Z8B). Ein Siderograph ist eine Kombination aus Uhr und Navigationsinstrument und hält eine Referenzzeit, die der Zeit auf 0° Greenwich-Länge entspricht. Aufbewahrt wurde dieses Präzisionsinstrument in einer Holzbox, die zentral eine Aluminiumplatte mit 5 Federn enthielt, die das Messinstrument frei schwebend befestigten. Die Bohrungen zur Befestigung der Federn befinden sich auf der Unterseite des Gehäuses. Der Longines-Siderograph wurde 1938 ursprünglich entwickelt, um die Navigation in Flugzeugen zu unterstützen. Das Instrument misst Greenwich-Stern- und Ortszeit in Stundenwinkeln, Minuten und Winkelminuten; seine Genauigkeit und Präzision machten den Siderographen zum Maß aller Dinge in der Schiffschronometrie. Er gestattete es dem Navigator, nachts genauso zu agieren wie am Tage und übertraf damit die Systeme von Weems und Lindbergh bei weitem, da beide von den Zeitzeichen abhängig waren. Die Siderographen waren mit dem Chronometerkaliber 21.29 ausgestattet, welches zur damaligen Zeit das präziseste Werk darstellte, das Longines besaß. Zusätzlich wurden eine Schleppzeigerfunktion und ein antimagnetischer Anker aus Beryllium eingebaut und das Werk wurde in ein Gehäuse aus gehärtetem Aluminium eingepasst; dieses Material war durch seine leichte und eisenfreie Natur für aeronautische und maritime Zwecke perfekt geeignet. Es gab Ausführungen mit einem und (extrem selten) wie hier bei diesem Exemplar mit zwei Schleppzeigern!

Rarität, Breguet Taschenchronometer mit Schleppzeiger-Chronograph und Zähler, No. 2478, mit Originalbox, Paris ca.1915: Ca. Ø55mm, ca. 113g, originales Silbergehäuse, Staubdeckel signiert und nummeriert 2478, Gehäusenummer 39725, Gehäusemacher-Punze AD, Ankerchronometer von allerfeinster Qualität mit Schleppzeiger-Chronograph, hervorragend erhaltenes Emaillezifferblatt mit roter und blauer Skala sowie 30-Minuten-Zähler, Chronograph Rattrapante, hervorragender Erhaltungszustand mit originaler, signierter und nummerierter Box, nummerngleich mit dem Staubdeckel 2478. Da die Uhr vermutlich seit Jahrzehnten unangetastet ist, ist eine Reinigung dringend notwendig. Diese Breguet Taschenchronometer sind außerordentlich selten, insbesondere mit der Komplikation eines Schleppzeiger-Chronographen. Ein weißgoldenes Ankerchronometer von Breguet No.2378 erzielte in unserer 197. Auktion einen außergewöhnlich hohen Preis von über 38.000€.

Taschenuhr: historisch interessantes John Arnold Chronometer No. 20/1020, London 1797/1810: Ca. Ø55mm, ca. 155g, typisches Arnold Silbergehäuse, nach beiden Seiten aufklappbar, Londoner Hallmarks 1810, innen vergoldet, wunderschönes, originales John Arnold & Son Werk mit durchbrochen gearbeiteten Kloben, Diamantdeckstein, zylindrischer Spirale und Arnold's Feder-Chronometerhemmung, Platine signiert John Arnold & Son London No. 20/1020 invenit et fecit, Emaillezifferblatt, Goldzeiger, sehr guter Zustand, funktionstüchtig. Provenienz: Sotheby's 1977, gelistet und wie hier vorliegend beschrieben in Hans Staeger: "100 Jahre Präzisionsuhren von John Arnold bis Arnold & Frodsham, 1763-1862". Da das Werk auf 1797 datiert wird, ist anzunehmen, dass die Uhr bereits 1810 bei Arnold modernisiert wurde. J.R. Arnold entschied sich offensichtlich dafür, die originale Federchronometerhemmung beizubehalten, das Werk wurde aber mit der damals neuartigen Pennington-Unruh ausgestattet, in diesem Fall in einer besonders schweren und hochwertigen Ausführung. Ein sehr interessantes Taschenchronometer, an dem sich die Evolution der Modernisierungen durch Arnolds Sohn, John Roger Arnold, gut erkennen lässt. Nach heutigem Kenntnisstand sind lediglich 6 dieser Arnold Chronometer der sog. III. Serie bekannt.

Taschenuhr: feine Präzisionstaschenuhr mit Minutenrepetition, signiert Vacheron & Constantin, ca. 1910: Ca. Ø 48,5mm, ca. 82g, 18K Gold, Gehäuse und Werk nummerngleich 28395, signiertes Präzisionsankerwerk mit Genfer Streifen, Minutenrepetition, signiertes Emaillezifferblatt, gebläute Stahlzeiger, funktionstüchtig, guter Zustand. Das Gehäuse ist vermutlich ein Zweitgehäuse, da es bei Vacheron & Constantin ein Nummernsystem mit unterschiedlichen Werks-und Gehäusenummern gab. He carries a gourd which holds medicine that cures the sick and ailing. Traditionally, he has been seen as the protector of physicians. Although he may appear ugly and is generally considered irascible and ill-tempered, according to Chinese mythology, he was benevolent to the poor, sick, and needy. Li had magical powers and spent much time outside his body, traveling in the celestial regions. Once, when he was absent for some time, his disciple buried his body. On returning to Earth, the immortal’s soul entered the body of a beggar – the first good person he saw.Liu Hai is usually depicted as a young man with bangs, and his eponym means ‘bangs’ or ‘fringe’ in Modern Standard Chinese. Traditional Chinese and Japanese art frequently represents Liu with a string of square-holed cash coins and a mythical three-legged toad (chanchu), which is said to exist only on the moon, which it swallows during the eclipse. The quadrilobed tray rests on four small incurved feet and is finely decorated in colored enamels against a lime-green ground. The interior with a pair of confronted butterflies surrounded by leafy scrolling vines issuing melons and floral blossoms, encircled on the sides by a band of foliate scroll with lotus blossoms and melons. The exterior sides with further butterflies and foliate scroll. The base with an iron red six-character seal mark da Qing Jiaqing nianzhi and of the period. A DOUCAI 'DRAGON' BOWL AND COVER, YONGZHENG MARKS AND OF THE PERIOD 雍正款及年代斗彩龍紋蓋碗Please note this Lot is to be sold at No Reserve. 本拍品不設底價Expert’s note: This bowl belongs to a group of porcelain wares discussed by Peter Y.K. Lam in ‘Lang Tinji (1663-1715) and the Porcelain of the Late Kangxi Period’, Transactions of the Oriental Ceramic Society, volume 68, 2002-2003, page 44-45, which he attributes to the early years of the Yongzheng reign on account of their rather unusual marks.China, 1723-1735. The bowl of conical form with flared sides rising from an elongated straight foot to three notches around the rim, brightly enameled in the doucai palette and enhanced in underglaze-blue around the exterior with a yellow and a green five-clawed dragon chasing flaming pearls, leaping amid multi-colored clouds and flames, above a band of foam-specked swirling waves. The domed cover similarly decorated. The bowl and cover each with an underglaze-blue six-character mark da Qing Yongzheng nianzhi and of the period. (2)Provenance: From the collection of George Hathaway Taber, Jr., and thence by descent in the same family. George Hathaway Taber, Jr. (1859-1940) was a prolific collector of Chinese ceramics and jades with a discerning eye. He was the son of Captain George H. Taber (1808-1901), who rose from a humble background to serve as the President of the Fairhaven Bank. The younger Taber made his mark as a board member of the Gulf Oil Company. He built up an extraordinary collection of Chinese porcelain, which was loaned and partially gifted to a number of museums, including the Philbrook Museum, to form the core of their Chinese collection. Upon his death in 1940, the collection was split up between his descendants, and part of it was sold at Park Bernet Galleries, New York, 7-8 March 1946.Condition: Overall good condition, commensurate with age. Minor frits to rims, some with microscopic touch-ups. The bowl with a single hairline. The cover with a minuscule chip (approx. 3 x 5 mm) and an associated fill. Some wear, as expected. Among this group were famous potters like Zhang Mianyi and Wang Bingrong. At that time, some porcelain workshops started carving ceramic vessels, such as snuff bottles or brush pots, as a diversification and improvement from the earlier practice of molding. The uniformity and depth of the characters, as exemplified by the present lot, can only be achieved by careful and steady carving, which takes a lot of time and a highly advanced skillset.The monochrome glaze serves to highlight the sheer quality of the carving, unlike in molded designs, which almost always show painted details in polychrome enamels, gilt, and iron red. These details serve to ‘hide’ the many imperfections of the molded design. As opposed to that, the glaze - which pools around the characters –highlights every single imperfection to the design … unless there simply is none, such as in the present lot.The Heart Sutra is known also as the Prajnaparamita sutra and was translated into Chinese in the 7th century by the pilgrim monk Xuanzang on the orders of the Emperor Gaozong (reigned 649-683 AD). It was one of the principal scriptures of the Madhyamika school of Buddhism, founded by the great Buddhist philosopher Nagarjuna (c. 100-200 BC), mostly because of its emphasis on true wisdom which eventually leads to enlightenment.Scholars agree that the Heart Sutra is the most recited, copied, and studied scripture in East Asian Buddhism. Of ovoid form, molded with a band of chrysanthemum petals above the flaring foot, surmounted by a tall trumpet neck, covered to the exterior in a glaze of raspberry suffused with speckles of mushroom and green copper oxide, running thinner on the rim and molded petals, the inner rim partly covered in raspberry thinning into white towards the interior. Provenance: From a noted private collection in Geneva, Switzerland, assembled since the 1960s, and thence by descent. An important part of this collection was on permanent loan and exhibited over several decades at the Asia-Africa Museum in Geneva. (2)The peachbloom glaze has been the focus of scientific research since the mid-20th century. Both the overall soft pinkish red of the glaze, and the areas of clear green which appear to a greater or lesser extent within it owe their hue to copper. Firing in a reducing atmosphere creates the red color, while re-oxidation creates the green. This was therefore a glaze that had to be applied very precisely and fired with great care. Research suggests that a copper-lime pigment was applied between two layers of colorless glaze. The copper-lime pigment was applied by blowing through a bamboo tube with fine silk gauze over the end, to achieve an effect similar to modern spraying techniques. This allowed the thickness of the copper-lime layer to be adjusted so that some areas would be thicker than others. In those thicker areas, there was additional flux, which thinned the upper glaze layer and allowed the copper to re-oxidize and produce clear green. In the other areas, some of the pigment was undissolved making it appear slightly opaque and yet smooth on the surface, while the majority of the copper did dissolve and produced a rich pinkish red and creating one of the most highly esteemed glazes from the Qing imperial kilns. The slender leaves decorated in two shades of green, one side with two iron-red bats, and the rim with iron-red flowerheads borne on scrolling vines. The interior with distinct areas of calcification indicating extended use as a water basin. The poet Tao Qian (365-427) tells of a fisherman who, when following the source of a stream in a peach orchard – 'Peach Blossom Spring' – through a crevice in a rock, discovered a paradisiacal world. A peach orchard is also the setting for the oath of brotherhood sworn by the three main protagonists of the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, one of whom, the Han dynasty (206 BC-AD 220) general Guan Yu, was deified and worshipped as Emperor Guan or God of War for near two millennia. The ‘peaches of immortality’, which are said to grow in the garden of Xi Wangmu, the Queen Mother of the West, flower only once every three thousand years, take three thousand years to bear fruit and another three thousand years to ripen, and are then offered in a banquet to the immortals. Dongfang Shuo, a witty and clever Han dynasty scholar, who became the hero of many legends, is reported to have stolen peaches of immortality and thus to have become immortal. He was born in Zhejiang, but after the death of his father in 1855 moved to Shanghai, where he was exposed to Western thinking. He became a member of the Shanghai School which fused popular and traditional styles. Ren Yi ranked with Ren Xiong, Ren Xun, and Ren Yu as the Four Rens. He was noted for his bold brushstrokes, as seen in the present work, and sparse yet distinct use of color. Freedman, "Qing Mark and Period Monochrome and Two-coloured Wares", Arts of Asia, May-June 1992, p. 147, related examples of similar form are referred to as “lotus pod bulb pots,” an understandable but quite unique description. The author further explains that blue and white designs may fall under the category of monochromes as they feature a one-color design on a white ground. These differing taxonomies from the 1992 article to today are quite notable, leaving ample room for undiscovered pieces that may still be hidden in private and public collections.China, 1736-1795. Superbly potted, the compressed pear-shaped body supported on a short foot and rising to a waisted neck surmounted by a slightly domed top in the form of a lotus pod pierced with three circular apertures. The exterior is exquisitely decorated in shades of cobalt blue with lotus blossoms and auspicious blooms borne on leafy scrolling vines, above a lappet band encircling the foot and below a band of floral sprays below the top, which is similarly decorated with lotus scroll, all framed by neatly applied double-line borders.The recessed base with an underglaze-blue six-character seal mark da Qing Qianlong nianzhi and of the period. Condition: Superb condition with only minor wear and minimal firing irregularities, the interior with some traces of use.Weight: 252.9 g Dimensions: Diameter 8.4 cm, Height 6.5 cmVessels of this form, variously described as ‘flower holders’ or ‘incense holders’, have been recorded from both the Yongzheng and Qianlong periods. The shape was likely inspired by a type of jarlet, made in bronze and pottery, which was popular during the Tang dynasty (see a sancai-glazed pottery jar from the Erwin Harris collection at Christie’s New York, 16 March 2017, lot 877). The Qing potters took this design to new heights with variations in glazes from simple, crackled monochromes to brilliant turquoise examples with slip-molded decoration. While the size of the Qing form tended to remain small, usually under 9 cm, this should not allow them to be overshadowed by larger porcelain works of the period. The compact size would have allowed for easier handling and transport, making them suitable for personal devotion, private altars, and carrying during travel, creating a sense of intimacy and personal connection when using incense to cultivate a relationship with the divine realm. Delicately potted, each with gently rounded sides rising from a straight foot to a broad everted rim, finely painted in shades of cobalt blue to the exterior with leafy bamboo, gnarled pine, and blossoming prunus, below a band of ruyi heads and stylized flowerheads to the rim, the interior with a central flowering prunus tree growing from rockwork, the rim repeating the ‘Three Friends of Winter’ motif.Provenance: From the collection of Frances L. Dickson, and thence by descent within the family. Frances Louisa Dickson (1876-1967, née Maunsell) was an avid collector of both European and Chinese porcelain. She lived with her husband, Colonel William Dickson, and their four daughters at Kildimo House, county Limerick, Ireland, and in Bournemouth, England, in 1910. While little is known about her life, Frances Dickson’s substantial contribution to The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge University, has been noted for a great variety of porcelain figures and vessels from various ancient periods. Well potted, the compressed globular body rising from a short splayed foot, sweeping up to a tall waisted neck flaring gently at the rim. The body deftly painted in deep shades of cobalt blue with simulated ‘heaping and piling’ with a wide band of composite floral scroll above stylized lappets, all below a band of ruyi-heads and a further floral band to the shoulder, divided by four raised fillets. The recessed base with an underglaze blue six-character seal mark da Qing Qianlong nianzhi and of the period.Provenance: Dorothy Joan (née Murphy) (1918-1989) and Roland Milton (1917-1990), United Kingdom, who were gifted the vase on their wedding in May 1945. Thence by descent in the family.Condition: Excellent condition with only minor surface wear. The inside of the neck with two glaze pulls, not visible from the outside, inherent to firing.
