Original vintage Italian propaganda poster for the Italian Communist Party (PCI) published in 1965 to promote the party's membership campaign: Campagna Tesseramento e Proselitismo (Membership Campaign and Proselitism) - Per avanzare verso il socialismo sulla via tracciata da Togliatti piu iscritti e piu voti al P.C.I. (To progress towards socialism on the path marked out by Togliatti - More members and more votes to the P.C.I). This poster features a black and white photograph of Palmiro Togliatti who was the leader of the Italian Communist Party. Printed in Italy by Cronograph, Roma. Palmiro Togliatti was an Italian politician and leader of the Italian Communist Party. He was nicknamed by his supporters Il Migliore ("The Best"). In 1930 he became a citizen of the Soviet Union and later he had a city in the country named after him: Tolyatti. Togliatti was a founding member of the Communist Party of Italy (Partito Comunista d’Italia, PCI), and from 1927 until his death, he was the Secretary and the undisputed leader of the Italian Communist Party, except for a period from 1934 to 1938 in which he had been the representative in the Comintern, the international organization of the communist parties. After the dissolution of the Comintern in 1943 and the formation of the Cominform in 1947, he refused the post of Secretary General, offered to him directly by Stalin in 1951, preferring to remain at the head of the PCI. From 1944 to 1945 Togliatti held the post of Deputy Prime Minister and from 1945 to 1946 he was appointed Minister of Justice in the governments that ruled Italy after the fall of Fascism. He was also a member of the Constituent Assembly of Italy. Togliatti survived an assassination attempt in 1948, and died in 1964, during a holiday in Crimea on the Black Sea. Good condition, tears and creases in margins. Country: Italy, year of printing: 1965, designer: Unknown, size (cm): 100x70

Lot 202

Original vintage travel poster for a cruise line Royal Mail Line Limited - Mala Real Ingleza. Printed in Portugal to advertise their service from Leixoes and Lisbon to the ports of Brazil and Rio da Prata. Great design by Kenneth Shoemith showing a cruise ship sailing in the tropical waters with palm trees in the foreground. Kenneth Shoesmith, British artist (1890 - 1939) Despite being a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and of the British Society of Poster Designers, Kenneth Denton Shoesmith is little known today, yet his maritime art perfectly captures the romance and adventure of ocean liner travel in the early 20th century. In 1918 he left a career at sea to devote himself to painting, and much of his art celebrates the ships of the Royal Mail Line, for whom he produced a vast amount of paintings and sketches for advertising purposes, but perhaps the pinnacle of his career was working on the interiors of Queen Mary. Shoesmith died at the early age of 48 just before the outbreak of war in 1939. An obituarist wrote: 'As a poster artist - he was quite definitely in the front rank of those who are content to paint what they see and know. He was direct in his methods, sound in his drawing and brilliant in his colour. His ships were not only correct in detail but they were always in and not on the water, for he painted with a seaman's knowledge as well as an artist's perception.' Fair condition, on board with original eyelet for hanging on top, scratches in the image, bends on bottom corners. Country: Portugal, year of printing: 1930s, designer: Kenneth Shoemith, size (cm): 45x30.5

The original was thought to have been carved by Pier Maria da Pescia, after Michehlangelo. Many copies have been made including examples by James Tassie (1735 - 1799).

Caravia (Alessandro) Naspo Bizaro. nuouamente restampato, con la zonta de lamento chel fà per hauerse pentio de hauer sposao Cate Bionada Biriotta, 2 parts in 1, collation: A-L4, titles with full-page woodcut, repeated as full-page illustrations within text, with final blank, washed, 19th century green crushed morocco, richly gilt, g.e., 4to (203 x 147mm.), [Venice], Piero di Domenico, [c.1570-1575].⁂ Rare expanded second edition of this popular comic serenade composed in ottava rima and in Venetian dialect by the Venetian jeweller Caravia, whose name appears at the end of the dedicatory epistle to Antonio della Vecchia. The work first appeared in Venice in 1565, from the press of Domenico Nicolini da Sabbio, and at Caravia's expense. The relevance of the Naspo bizaro in the history of Italian popular literature, especially in the context of the commedia dell'arte, is widely acknowledged. The edition is also rightly famous for its woodcuts, which follow the iconography of the Venetian characters Pantalone and Zanni. Responsible for their execution was the renowned publisher, engraver, and print dealer Niccolò Nelli (c.1530 - 1579/86), who had a shop at the Rialto Bridge. The title of the 1570 publication bears the same large woodcut that decorates the previous edition and is signed with Nelli's monogram. The plate shows the Venetian Naspo Bizaro as a canterino, singing his hyperbolic serenade to the beautiful Cate Bionda Biriota - so-named after the rough district of Biri - while his servant Zan Polo eats in his gondola. The block is repeated as a full-page illustration on fol. F2v. A second woodcut - likewise a re-use of the one previously employed - is printed, as a full-page, on fol. D2v, and repeated on the divisional title El fin de l'inamoramento de Naspo Bizaro, introducing the Canto Quarto: the scene depicts a different poet-musician, singing and playing under a window, with the city of Venice in the background. The source of this woodcut is different, and the blocks are signed 'AL'. Literature: Adams C-626; Mortimer Italian, 105; Gamba, Serie degli impressi in dialetto veneziano, Venezia 1832, p. 83; E. Benini Clementi, Riforma religiosa e poesia popolare a Venezia nel Cinquecento: Alessandro Caravia, Firenze 2000. Provenance: Gugliemo Libri (1803-1869; see Catalogue de la Bibliothèque de M. L⁂*, Paris 1847, p. 268, lot 1667, 'Bel exemplaire'; the lot number '1667' is annotated on the verso of the front marbled flyleaf); sold for 19 francs to the Parisian bookseller A. Franck.

She attained a degree in Geography at Glasgow University and went on to train as a teacher. However, she had always painted and her talent was strongly encouraged by her uncle the distinguished Iain Macnab RE ROI (1890 - 1967) who persuaded Sheila to come to London and train under him. Iain Macnab had been Principal at Heatherley's Art School (1925 - 1940) and then went on to be founding Principal of the hugely influential Grosvenor School of Modern Art. Sheila's London influences and Glasgow School foundations evolved into a distinctive and individual style. She usually worked "en plein air" and her work is semi abstract. She focused mainly on landscape where her training as a geographer, allowed her to use her understanding of land formation, the delicate balance of the seasons and the interaction between Man and the environment. Her uncle's concept of "rhythm" is evident in Sheila's work and remained a constant throughout her career. She painted in Scotland, Spain. France and Italy and exhibited widely especially in Glasgow, Edinburgh, London and Newcastle.
