The Paolettis numbered amongst their clients Catherine the Great of Russia, Ferdinand III, Grand Duke of Tuscany, and Lord Elgin, and are listed in Heinrich Keller's contemporary directory of artists and craftsmen working in Rome in 1824 (Elenco di tutti i pittori, scultori, architetti miniatori...di Roma) at the same address as given in the present examples (page 70). The Paoletti firm are also advertised in Count Hawks Le Grice's guide Walks though the Studii of the Sculptors at Rome (1841) as follows: 'Paoletti begs to inform the public that he has arranged a collection of impressions (Impronte in Scajola) of many of the works in sculpture executed by distinguished artists ... Although the Impronte are but miniature copies; yet they exhibit all the fidelity and beauty of the original, and convey to the eye a better idea of sculpted works of art than the most finished engravings'. ESCHER, M.C. Regelmatige vlakverdeling. Utr., De Roos, 1958. 45 pp., (3) lvs. W. 6 or. woodcuts in black & white, 4 ill., 1 dec. initial & 1 extra set of 6 or. woodcuts printed in red, loosely inserted at rear under yellow cloth band fastener. (W. small ex libris ticket on upper paste-down, but in excellent condition). NOTE:"The regular division drawings of M.C. Escher are considered an important part of his artistic work. He made about 150 basic drawings of regular divisions, some of which were used later in his prints. In almost all of these drawings, it is the tile, the motif, that plays the leading role. However, there are a few exceptions. In his own definition of regular division of the plane, given in Regelmatige vlakverdeling Escher says that the tiles should fit tightly together on all sides, so that there is no space between them. In other words, the joint, the grout, the layer of mortar used by bricklayers to cement each stone to an adjacent stone, separates them in practice, but can theoretically be reduced to nothing. Mathematicians would call these joints “edges” of the tiling; edges are never considered to have any width." (Abstract from R. Roelofs 'Not the Tiles, but the Joints: A little Bridge Between M.C. Escher and Leonardo da Vinci'. In: 'M.C. Escher's legacy', (2003). - Printed in a limited and numbered edition of 175 copies, this copy being nr. 32. - Very fine copy. St. De Roos 45; Bool, 416-421.

* GORDON H WYLLIE RSW DA (SCOTTISH 1930 - 2005), AUTUMN MOON gouache on paper, signed and dated '82, titled label verso 11.5cm x 16cm Mounted, framed and under glass. Handwritten label verso. Note: Gordon Wyllie was born in Greenock and in 1949 was accepted to study at the Glasgow School of Art. Under the tutelage of such luminaries as Edward Odling and Mary and Willie Armour, Gordon distinguished himself, graduating in 1953 after an eminent final year. He was awarded the post-diploma, or Master's course, won the Scottish Academy Award and also the Newbery Medal, the school's most prestigious prize. This was all the more remarkable considering that Gordon had, in his diploma year, returned home to care for his father, whose seriously deteriorating health ended in death two months before the degree show, and Gordon himself had suffered a bout of pneumonia. With a scholarship award, he studied that summer at Hospitalfield, Arbroath, as a post-graduate under Ian Fleming. Fleming inspired Gordon and encouraged him in abstraction, with which he occupied himself for the next few years. Meanwhile, he trained at Jordanhill College of Education in Glasgow to become a teacher, in the vanguard of the resurgence of art teaching in Scottish schools by the new art masters, undoubtedly because they painted actively while teaching full-time. Passionate about art education, he was instrumental in influencing many students to pursue a career in the creative industry. A former pupil aptly described his classroom as a "guided exploration rather than a formal lesson". His love of the Scottish countryside is mirrored in his work and undoubtedly stemmed from the bank of images he built when, as a youngster, he travelled with his parents around the country. Argyll and the Western Isles were his favourite destinations, where he was fascinated by the crofts and farms sprouting from the land. Small houses typified his landscapes and still-lifes included abstracted landscapes; flowers, particularly poppies, fruit and fish feature in his later output. In 1996, he was awarded the Alexander Graham Munro Prize at the RSW exhibition in Edinburgh. His work featured regularly in one-man and combined shows and at his last one-man show in London in 2003, demand for his paintings remained high, as it has done ever since. In the last couple of years auction prices, in Glasgow and elsewhere, have shown a significant surge, reflecting the increasing collector interest in Gordon Wyllie's work. His auction record price has been beaten on regular occasions and currently stands at £2400 (hammer) established in October 2020.
