Paoletti (Bartolomeo & Pietro). Follower of Giulio Pippi, called Giulio Romano, Italian 1499-1546- A nude classical figure with drapery, in profile, turned to the left; pen and brown ink on laid paper, bears number '92' (upper right), and bears unidentified collector's mark with initials 'G. F. M.' in pen and brown ink (Lugt 3343) on the reverse, 10.6 x 7.8 cm. Note: A similarly sized drawing by Romano entitled 'A priestess leading a sacrificial goat', which bears the same collector's mark 'G.F.M.' and is numbered '94' sold at Christie's, New York, 22 January 2003, lot 16 - see https://www.christies.com/lot/giulio-pippi-called-giulio-romano-rome-1499-1546-4049491/?intObjectID=4049491&lid=1.). According to Lugt, the handwritten initials have been reported on several important drawings, including those by Marco Marchetti, called Marco da Faenza; Nicolas Poussin; and Francesco de Herrera the Elder. While Jean-Luc Baroni suggested a 17th or 18th-century collector, Anthony Blunt has argued that the collection more likely dates to the early 19th century (see A. Blunt, 'Further Newly Identified Drawings by Poussin and His Followers', Master Drawings, XVII, summer 1979, Vol.2, p. 139).Please refer to department for condition report
Charles Compton, British 1828-1884- Venus with Mercury and Cupid (The School of Love), After Antonio da Correggio (Italian 1489-1534); oil on canvas, signed and dated 'C Compton / 1872' (lower right), 60.5 x 45.4 cm. Note: The present work is a 19th-century copy by Charles Compton after Correggio's original and larger painting, which was conceived in c.1525, and is today held in the National Gallery, London [no.NG10]. A young family enjoys a tender moment in a leafy glade. Venus, goddess of love, and here, unusually, depicted with wings, holds the bow of her son Cupid, as his father Mercury, god of wisdom, teaches him to read. Correggio's painting is a companion piece to his 'Venus and Cupid with a Satyr' (Louvre, Paris), in which a lustful satyr is shown uncovering Venus sleeping in sensuous abandon on the ground. The National Gallery’s painting represents the celestial Venus; the Louvre’s painting represents the earthly Venus. Although few biographical details are known about Charles Compton, he was acquainted with some of the Pre-Raphaelite artists and admired the paintings of John Everett Millais in particular. His monumental 'Banquet Given by Marylebone Reformers' is held at Cardiff University [no.77]. Please refer to department for condition report

After Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, called Caravaggio, Italian 1573-1609- Ecce Homo; oil on canvas, 58.2 x 77. Provenance: Private Collection, UK (Since 1996). Note: A slightly later (partial) copy of the picture which made art news headlines in 2021 for its appearance at a Madrid auction house as 'Circle of José de Ribera' and subsequent withdrawal from the public market, after several art historians decreed it to be a long-lost work by the Italian Baroque master, Caravaggio.
