ANDY WARHOL (Pittsburgh, USA, 1928 - New York, USA, 1987)."From de Sonaben Collection, Gagosian, 2009.Lithograph poster.Unsigned.Size: 76 x 50,5 cm.Double-sided lithograph poster with Warhol's Sonnabend Collection in the show at Gagosian New York in 2009.Warhol's Sonnabend Collection remains, to this day, one of the most iconic pieces of his work. The Gagosian wanted to create a poster for the exhibition that would be "a snapshot of the history of Warhol's art collecting".An American visual artist who became the best known representative of pop art, an artistic trend in vogue during the 1950s and 1960s that was inspired by mass culture. The son of Slovakian immigrants, he began his art studies at the Carnegie Institute of Technology between 1945 and 1949. In the latter year he began his career as an advertising cartoonist for various magazines such as Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Seventeen and The New Yorker. At the same time he painted canvases with everyday, advertising and comic themes. He soon began to exhibit in various galleries. He progressively eliminated any expressionist traits from his works until he reduced them to a serial repetition of a popular element from mass culture, the world of consumerism or the media. This evolution reached its peak of depersonalisation in 1962, when he began to use a mechanical silkscreen printing process as his working method, by means of which he systematically reproduced myths of contemporary society, the most representative examples of which are the series dedicated to Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Elizabeth Taylor and Mao Tse-tung, as well as his famous treatment of Campbell's soup cans, all works produced during the fruitful decade of the 1960s. The use of mass-circulated images, easily recognisable by all kinds of audiences, such as the aforementioned soup cans or Coca-Cola bottles, became one of the most interesting and stable features of his entire output. On other occasions he crudely depicted real situations, such as accidents, street fights, funerals or suicides; within this theme, Electric chair is one of his most significant works. This appropriationism, a constant feature of the work of the supporters of Pop Art, extended to universal works of art by authors such as Raphael Sanzio, Giorgio de Chirico, Edvard Munch and Leonardo da Vinci. Through mass reproduction, he succeeded in stripping the media fetishes he used of their usual referents, turning them into stereotypical icons with a decorative meaning. In 1963 he set up the Factory, a workshop in which many of New York's underground culture gathered around him. The frivolity and extravagance that marked his way of life established a coherent line between his work and his life's trajectory; his peculiar appearance, androgynous and permanently topped with a characteristic blond fringe, ended up defining a new icon: the artist himself. He was one of the first artists to consciously exploit his image for self-promotional purposes; through a process of identification, he acquired in the eyes of the public the significance of just another advertising product. In 1963 he began a film career based on the same principles as his plastic work (such as visual reiteration), sometimes with a strong sexual and erotic content.

DANIEL NIKOLAUS CHODOWIECKI (ATTR.)1726 Danzig - 1801 BerlinDER ABSCHIED DES JEAN CALAS VON SEINER FAMILIE Öl auf Leinwand (altdoubl.). 48 x 64 cm (R. 71 x 87 cm). Part. Oberflächenverschmutzungen, min. altrest. Rahmen.

Italy, Venice or Veneto, 1490-1500 A.D. A Pentelic marble relief depicting a kneeling donor and angel; the donor wearing a pleated tabard split along the sides and belted at the back, over-shirt gathered above the elbow; schematic facial features; angel facing right, wearing flowing robes, textured feather detailing to the wings, downcast head with naturalistic facial detailing; background of lozenges occupied by stylised foliate motifs, likely imitating a cloth of honour; traces of gilding on the hair of the angel and drilling for pupils of the eyes; traces of polychrome. Cf. Passuello, A., ‘Per la scultura tardogotica veneta. Due opere di Antonio da Mestre in diocesi vicentina’ in Arte Cristiana, No.898, Jan-Feb. 2017, pp.19-28, figs.1,3,5; Wright, A., Frame work: honour and ornament in Italian Renaissance art, Yale, 2019. 13.7 kg, 41.2 cm high (16 1/4 in.). Marc-Arthur Kohn SARL, 4 August 2010, lot 187. Ex central London gallery. Accompanied by a copy of a previous typed catalogue page. Accompanied by an academic report by Dr. Raffaele D'Amato. This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by AIAD certificate no.11413-192178. The relief, from a tomb or tabernacle, was likely once located next to an image of a patron saint or, most probably, Virgin and Child. It belongs to a category of figures in high-relief, made by itinerant workshops for altarpieces and choir screens in churches in northern Italy and especially in Venice, but the workshop could also be a consolidated one. The angel, with its soft facial features and weighty, voluminous folds of drapery, represents the medieval style of sculpture typical of late North Italian Gothic and especially Venetian in the late 15th century A.D. This style is visible in famous monuments, like the magnificent grave of the Doge Mocenigo, realised between 1476 and 1481 in Venice by Pietro and Tullio Lombardo, today kept in the Church of Saint John and Paul in Venice. [No Reserve] [A video of this lot is available to view on Timeline Auctions Website.]

* PAM CARTER DA PAI (SCOTTISH 1952 - 2022), HARBOUR LIGHTHOUSE gouache on paper, signed and dated '83, inscribed 'Porth Tywyn', titled label verso image size 32cm x 41cm, overall size 46cm x 54cm Mounted, framed and under glass. Exhibition label verso: February '85, The Torrance Gallery, Edinburgh (a rare early work by Pam Carter). Note 1: It was with great sadness that we learnt of the passing of Pam Carter in May after an illness which she wrote about to her database of buyers on 24th June 2021: "I feel at last I am retiring somewhat due to ill health. I am not painting very much these days as I am struggling with the daily regime of chemo tablets; it’s hard getting the balance of effective medication and quality of life". Note 2: Pam Carter was born in Tanganyika, East Africa to an Austrian mother and Scottish father. At the age of thirteen, she came to Scotland where she schooled at Bearsden Academy. She graduated from Glasgow School of Art in the seventies. "My main inspiration as an artist is in the Scottish landscape and seascape. I enjoy using colour to define contours, structure and changing light sequences. I search out specific viewpoints. I am equally inspired by the rugged isolation of the Western Isles and the dramatic viewpoints of the Eastern coastline. I work predominantly in oil". Pam Carter was unquestionably one of Scotland's most popular and successful contemporary artists. She won numerous awards and prizes, always received significant media attention, has been the subject of many magazine features and had several tv appearances. Her work is widely exhibited but rarely appears at auction. However, in The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 17th April 2022 lot 38 "Luskentyre Reflections" a 46 x 51cm oil by Pam Carter sold for £2000 (hammer) and in The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 10th July 2022 lot 230 "Gables Geary" sold for £2600 (hammer). Comment: Pam was a special artist and one who enjoyed wide popularity and substantial commercial success. In all our dealings with Pam over the years, she was always generous with her time and quick to provide the background to paintings we had received from private consignors and filling in gaps about locations, dates etc. Pam's work is instantly recognisable and she had that rare gift, even among the best artists, of being able to use the minimum of brushwork to create the maximum visual effect. Her "lines" were those of the natural environment but she knew exactly how to "see" them and portray them on canvas. Despite her commercial success, or perhaps even because of it, Pam's work probably hasn't yet reached the full audience that it so richly deserves. She exhibited frequently at numerous galleries in Scotland and gallery owners were inevitably in a queue to secure her work. Typically, Pam showed loyalty to those who were the first to support her when she was a relative unknown. Talented artists always wish to be remembered by their work and Pam Carter can be certain of that, but she'll also be remembered with great affection by all those who had the good fortune to meet her or know her.
