Expert opinion by professor Claudio Strinati: «It is a remarkable work, a precious testimony, in my opinion, of the first activity phase of the great Neapolitan painter who became one of the absolute protagonists of the Neapolitan artistic life of the first twenty-five years of the seventeenth century. The work here in exam, however, must be dated first and more precisely in the in which Santafede had the task, quite well documented in the sources, from the altarpiece of the main altar, depicting a Madonna and Saints, of Matera Cathedral, which although not signed is a certain and datable work around 1580-83. A comparison between the painting in question here and the colossal altarpiece from Matera confirms the reference to the young Santafede in our work as well as a similar dating, perhaps, for our painting, to be moved slightly forward, that is, to the middle of the last decade of the sixteenth century. The scenes from the life of Christ around are very noteworthy to the Annunciation, in which the influences of the greats are clearly noticeablemannerists especially (but not exclusively) industrious Flemish a Naples in the second half of the sixteenth century like Teodoro d' Errico or Aert Mytens. Furthermore, it is still very strong in these splendid and fervent scenes the influence of Marco Pino da Siena, the great painter who had a presence in Naples was decisive and also significantly influenced Santafedeat its beginnings. In the Annunciation, however, the connection is already evident, then favored by Santafede himself, with the great Florentine painting of the late Cinquecento on which Santafede, perhaps also under the influence of Belisario Corenzio who at that time in Naples held a sort of monopoly on larger clients, he modeled his magnificent stylistic signature of clarity and classical composure combined with a very noble and majestic expressiveness, also mindful of the lesson of the Roman school that he taughtcertainly knew and appreciated. Magnificently preserved, our painting is therefore a beautiful testimony to the decisive turning point in classical painting Southern in the latter part of the sixteenth century. Medizin - - Christoph Barzizius (Barzizza). Christofori barzizii medici peritissimi introductorium in medicinam legenti cuilibet perutile. Mit Holzschnitt-Titelbordüre u. einigen Holzschnitt-Initialen. Augsburg, Sigmund Grimm, 14. XII. 1518. 63 unnum. Bl., 1 w. Bl. 4°. Flexibler Pergamentband d. Zt. (etwas fleckig). Einzige Ausgabe des 16. Jahrhunderts, von größter Seltenheit. - VD 16, B 619. - Durling 484 - Hirsch/H. I, 367 (falsch 'Wien') - Panzer VI, 151, 127. Medicine - With woodcut title border a. some woodcut initials. Cont. flex. vellum binding (somewhat soiled). - Exceptionally rare, only edition of the 16th century. - Probably one of the earliest introductions to the scientific study of medicine from the pen of the Italian scholar Christoph Barzizius. An incunabula edition published in Pavia in 1494 preceded this one. - This print, produced in the print shop of Sigismund Grimm, doctor of medicine, is certainly to be understood as an attempt to disseminate the knowledge of important medical experts from the universities of Pavia and Padua north of the Alps. The edition proves that the "Introductorium" not only appeared important and valuable to a circle of physicians (as editors) and the printer Antonius Carcanus, who specialised in medicine, in 1494, many years after the author's death, but was also later perceived in Augsburg as a summary of late medieval medical practice (although the plague is only mentioned in passing - and the problem of syphilis could not be discussed, as the disease had not yet spread to Europe). - Very well preserved, rubricated copy with wide margins. Title with handwritten ownership note (Cart. in Buxheim, whose library was auctioned in 1883), old library stamp, another stamp in lower margin of leaf 2. Minimal worming in places, endpapers renewed.

The present lot, however, shows a quality of enameling that comes rather close to the original model, thus indicating a date from ca. 1820-1880 or even a bit earlier.Auction result comparison: Type: RelatedAuction: Christie's Hong Kong, 3 June 2015, lot 3150Price: HKD 3,880,000 or approx. The bronze is covered overall in a fine, naturally grown patina with malachite encrustations.Weight: 1,698 g Dimensions: Height 27 cm Mounted on a metal stand. (2)Literature comparison:Compare a related bronze figure of Lokesvara, 27 cm high, dated to the Angkor period, in the National Palace Museum, accession number CAM 3251, published in Brice Vencent's article Nouvelle etude du Lokeśvara Khmer du Musee national de Colombo, Arts Asiatiques 68, 2013, pp. 33.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Christie's New York, 21 September 2007, lot 366 Price: USD 21,250 or approx. EUR 29,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing Description: A bronze figure of Lokeshvara, 13th century Expert remark: Note the similar position of the arms and various implements he holds. Note the size (26.3 cm) and the fact that while this is an entire figure, the present lot - if the entire figure had been preserved - would have roughly double the size of this comparison.Update 25.9.2023: A noted expert and colleague has informed us that there is a possibility that the present lot is pre-angkorian and should be dated accordingly e.g. 8th-9th century. Specifically the hair locks show some iconographical simliarity to certain sandstone figures from phnom da.
