BOOK OF HOURS: An excellent and very attractive book of hours, being a facsimile edition of “Book of Hours of Leonor of Portugal”, a limited edition of 500 copies. The book of hours contains 256 pages, 6 x 8, colour illuminated, richly illustrated, in Latin. Known as `As Perfeitissimas Horas da Rainha D.Leonor´, or the “The Rich Hours of Vrelant”, circa 1470, this book of hours is considered a sample masterpiece work of miniature grisaille. Attractively bounded in brown leather. VG £600-900Eleanor of Portugal (1458-1525) known as Eleanor of Viseu or Eleanor of Lancaster. MARIA CHRISTINA OF AUSTRIA: (1858-1929) Queen consort of Spain 1879-85 as spouse of King Alfonso XII. She was Regent of Spain since the death of her husband and birth of her son King Alfonso XIII 1885-1902. D.S., `Yo la Reina Regenta´ (`I the Queen Regent´, one page, large 17 x 25 folio, San Sebastian Palace, 21st August 1893, to Waldo Ferrer y Garayta, in Spanish. The partially printed document being a title given to Waldo Ferrer y Garayta, appointing him Commander of the Royal order of Charles III. The document bears an attractive printed large vignette of King Charles III, reproducing his portrait to the crowned heading, the blessed cross of the order at the base, and is entitled "D. Alfonso III, by the grace of God and the Constitution, King of Spain, and on his behalf while minor, Da. Maria Cristina, Queen Regent". At the date of the present letter, King Alfonso XIII is only seven years old. Countersigned by the Grand chancellor, Marquis of Rocamora and Duke of Rivas. Also bearing a large blind embossed seal at the base and a large and attractive contemporary post-stamp and ink stamp to the right upper edge. Few small stains to the borders and small tear to the upper edge not affecting text or signatures, otherwise about VG £150-200
A modern Italian style harpsichord, 'D.A.', 1973. Green painted outer case with a lid painting of the nativity. Raised on three unpainted turned legs. The nameboard decoration copied from the Keene & Brackley spinet nameboard (see Lot 148). The decorated jackrail bearing the inscription: AD 1973 DA. The soundboard inset with a carved gilded rose bearing the initials D.A. The four octave keyboard with rosewood naturals and stained arcades, stained accidentals. Two eight foot registers with ebonised jacks controlled by hand-stops. Serial number 74 Length 209cm, width 82cm, case height including lid 28cm. FRANCESCO PAOLO MICHETTI (ITALIAN 1851 - 1929),THE PIPE PLAYERPastel on paper, signed35.50cm x 26.00cm Mounted, framed and under glass.Provenance: Acquired Shapes Auctions (Edinburgh) 31st March 2007 lot 596 for £6300 (hammer).Note: Michetti was born in Tocco da Casauria in the Province of Chieti. His father having died when he was a boy, Michetti was forced to work with a local artisan. In 1868, Michetti was awarded a stipend by the province to study at the Accademia (now Istituto) in Naples under Domenico Morelli. Among his colleagues was Eduardo Dalbono. There he also interacted with Filippo Palizzi, Giuseppe De Nittis, and Marco De Gregorio, artists of the School of Resina. Disciplinary problems soon caused Michetti to return to Chieti. He began to spend time in Francavilla a Mare, which by 1878 would be his home.He traveled to Paris, encouraged and supported by De Nittis, by the patron Beniamino Rotondo, and by the art merchant Reutlinger. In Paris, he exhibited in the Salon of 1872: Ritorno dall'erbaggio, Dream of Innocence, and The Pumpkin Harvest. He also exhibited at Salons in 1875 and 1876. In 1874, he befriended the Spanish painter Mariano Fortuny in Naples.In 1877, with his Corpus Christi Procession, a highly colourful, efervescent depiction of a festival, he became recognized as one of the best in the schools exhibition. The next year in Paris, he exhibited Springtime and Love, a depiction of families enjoying a hilltop above a village with a broad view of the sea and sky.At the 1880 National Exposition in Turin, Michetti exhibited Palm Sunday, the Pescatrici di londine, and i Morticelli. At the 1881 Exhibition of Milan, he was a prolific exhibitor with 34 paintings, mostly studies of faces, full of sentiment, and seascapes, full of windblown sails. Later in life, he was awarded recognition. In 1896 he was named a member of the Accademia Pontaniana of Naples; in 1903, he was admitted in to the Roman Academy of St Luke; and in 1911 was named Honorary President of the Regional Committee for the Esposizione Pescarese. In 1913 he was named to the Commissione Ordinatrice della Galleria Nazionale D'arte Moderna of Rome. In June 1909, he was nominated to be an Italian Senator. He had three children, Elvira Michetti, Giorgio Michetti and Liberato. His son, Giorgio Michetti, was a World War I flying ace.
