FRANCESCO PAOLO MICHETTI (ITALIAN 1851 - 1929),THE PIPE PLAYERPastel on paper, signed35.50cm x 26.00cm Mounted, framed and under glass.Provenance: Acquired Shapes Auctions (Edinburgh) 31st March 2007 lot 596 for £6300 (hammer).Note: Michetti was born in Tocco da Casauria in the Province of Chieti. His father having died when he was a boy, Michetti was forced to work with a local artisan. In 1868, Michetti was awarded a stipend by the province to study at the Accademia (now Istituto) in Naples under Domenico Morelli. Among his colleagues was Eduardo Dalbono. There he also interacted with Filippo Palizzi, Giuseppe De Nittis, and Marco De Gregorio, artists of the School of Resina. Disciplinary problems soon caused Michetti to return to Chieti. He began to spend time in Francavilla a Mare, which by 1878 would be his home.He traveled to Paris, encouraged and supported by De Nittis, by the patron Beniamino Rotondo, and by the art merchant Reutlinger. In Paris, he exhibited in the Salon of 1872: Ritorno dall'erbaggio, Dream of Innocence, and The Pumpkin Harvest. He also exhibited at Salons in 1875 and 1876. In 1874, he befriended the Spanish painter Mariano Fortuny in Naples.In 1877, with his Corpus Christi Procession, a highly colourful, efervescent depiction of a festival, he became recognized as one of the best in the schools exhibition. The next year in Paris, he exhibited Springtime and Love, a depiction of families enjoying a hilltop above a village with a broad view of the sea and sky.At the 1880 National Exposition in Turin, Michetti exhibited Palm Sunday, the Pescatrici di londine, and i Morticelli. At the 1881 Exhibition of Milan, he was a prolific exhibitor with 34 paintings, mostly studies of faces, full of sentiment, and seascapes, full of windblown sails. Later in life, he was awarded recognition. In 1896 he was named a member of the Accademia Pontaniana of Naples; in 1903, he was admitted in to the Roman Academy of St Luke; and in 1911 was named Honorary President of the Regional Committee for the Esposizione Pescarese. In 1913 he was named to the Commissione Ordinatrice della Galleria Nazionale D'arte Moderna of Rome. In June 1909, he was nominated to be an Italian Senator. He had three children, Elvira Michetti, Giorgio Michetti and Liberato. His son, Giorgio Michetti, was a World War I flying ace.

South East Asia.- Ferreira (Manuel) Noticias Summarias das perseguicoes da Missam de Cochinchina, principiada, & continuada pelos Padres da Companhia de Jesu, first edition, half-title, woodcut device on title, woodcut initials and decorations, some leaves browned,small marginal ink stain to one leaf, 19th century Portuguese mottled calf, gilt spine with red morocco label, [Palau 194164; Cordier, Biblioteca Indosinica 1924], folio, Lisbon, Miguel Manescal, 1700.⁂ First edition of this extremely scarce work on the persecution and martyrdom of Christian missionaries in Cochinchina at the end of the 17th century. This volume is considered one of the most important European works on Cochinchina from that time period. Jesuit priest Manuel Ferreira arrived in Vietnam in 1694, after having served as a missionary elsewhere in the East Indies since 1658. Ferreira provides a description of the region, including history, local customs, geography, and vegetation, before going on to discuss the establishment of the Jesuit missions. Much of the text focuses on the persecution, imprisonment, and often brutal murders of Christian missionaries who refused to renounce their faith, reporting that men were beheaded while women were thrown to the elephants. The last copy we have been able to trace at auction appeared in 1933.Provenance: Prosepero Peragallo (historian, signature dated Lisbon 1875 on title).

Camassei, 1 engraved portrait and 14 plates, woodcut ornamental initials and tailpieces, occasional faint off-setting, blind-stamp and later discreet ink-stamp to free endpapers, later vellum, red morocco gilt spine label, small ink number to spine head, [Gamba 97, Landwehr 136, Cicognara 1985], 4to, Rome, Vitale Mascardi, 1640.⁂ The plates are engraved by Bloemart, G. F. Greuter and Fabia della Cornia, and are after A. and L. Magalotti, C. Massimi, F. Zuccaro and Nicolas Poussin. Barberino later enjoyed a long and distinguished career as a lawyer and privileged citizen. Provenance: Unidentified blind-stamp ex-libris to front free endpaper, an hourglass with initial R. P. and motto Dammi Tempo.

People flocked from miles around to see her, to the point where the army were called in to control crowds.

Nota di possesso manoscritta al verso del frontespizio e del ritratto 'Ego Jovanes Baptista Ferialtus [?]', la seconda datata 1702.Rarissima edizione di uno dei più bei libri figurati del Seicento italiano. L'opera venne impressa a Venezia nel 1624, e successivamente riproposta nel 1630 e nel 1655 con il solo frontespizio mutato, mediante la raschiatura della tavola originale. La copia qui presentata è eccezionalmente completa delle 48 superbe tavole incise da Odoardo Fialetti (1573-1637/38), pupillo di Tintoretto. L'autore, il cremasco Francesco Tensini (1579/81-1638) fu uno dei più rinomati architetti militari del tempo, e la sua Fortificatione è da annoverarsi tra i più completi manuali antichi di ingegneria di guerra. Eighteenth century half calf, covers in marbled paper, lower outer corners scratched . Spine with 4 raised bands, gilt title on leather lettering-piece. Red speckled edges. Manuscriipt owner's inscription on verso of the title-page and at the portrait, 'Ego Jovanes Baptista Ferialtus [?]', the second one dated 1702. Very rare edition of one of the most beautiful illustrated books of the Italian Seventeenth century. The work was imprinted in Venice in 1624, and subsequently reissued in 1630 and in 1655 with the only title-page changed, by scraping the original table. The copy presented here is exceptionally complete with 48 magnificent plates engraved by Odoardo Fialetti (1573-1637 / 38), pupil of Tintoretto. The author, Francesco Tensini (1579 / 81-1638) was one of the most renowned military architects of the time, and his Fortificatione is to be counted among the most complete ancient manuals of warfare engineering.

The opera Lidoire is part of the dialogues, through which the author highlighted the comic aspect, the contradictions and fears of the different social classes, associated only by a rare mediocrity, placing their characters in a reality that abandons the daily to get into the best theater of the absurd.
