(2)Footnotes:This pair shows capriccio views of the port of Rio de Janeiro bustling with activity. There are merchant ships and smaller boats anchored at shore with local people animating the scene; women and men carrying food and goods on their heads and working on boats. The church on the left in the first image looks to be Santa Lucia and in the background one can see the city surrounded by the mountains. The second image bears a resemblance to Sao Goncalo with its mountains in the background. These street scenes show the clear influence of both Debret and Rugendas. Debret was a French painter who travelled to Brazil in 1816 as a member of the so-called French Artistic Mission, a group of bonapartist French artists and artisans bound to creating an arts and crafts lyceum in Rio de Janeiro under King D. João VI and the Conde da Barca; this later became the Academia Imperial de Bellas Artes under Emperor Dom Pedro I.Debret is known for his depictions of everyday life in Brazil and started to sketch street scenes, local costumes and people between 1816 and 1831. He was particularly interested in slavery of black and indigenous people in Brazil. Together with the German painter Johann Moritz Rugendas, his work is some of the most important documentation of Brazilian life during the early decades of nineteenth century. Original vintage poster promoting an exhibition of Albrecht Durer woodblock prints and etchings at the Gera Museum of History in Germany from 9 January to 27 February, 1972. Albrecht Durer sometimes spelt in English as Durer or Duerer (without an umlaut), was a German painter, printmaker, and theorist of the German Renaissance. Born in Nuremberg, Durer established his reputation and influence across Europe when he was in his twenties due to his high-quality woodcut prints. He was in communication with the major Italian artists of his time, including Raphael, Giovanni Bellini and Leonardo da Vinci, and from 1512 was patronized by Emperor Maximilian I. Durer is commemorated by both the Lutheran and Episcopal Churches. Very good condition, fold, repaired tears, minor discolouration. Original vintage travel advertsing poster for TWA / Trans World Airlines featuring an illustrated menu for Da Meo Patacca restaurant including drawings of grapes, wine, TWA planes and a man on horseback. Patterned red border on a yelow background. Da Meo Patacca, a 19th-century taverna located in the Trastevere area in the centre of Roma, the Italian capital city. In July 1959 Remington Olmsted, American actor and Roman of adoption, conceived and founded the restaurant Da Meo Patacca in Rome. He recreated the atmosphere of a Roman tavern of the nineteenth century within the splendid setting of Trastevere, historical and architectural gem of medieval Rome. The dishes, the location, the furnishings: everything in the restaurant Da Meo Patacca expresses history, the rich and fascinating history of the city, but above all the history of the Roman people and their ancient traditions; the lighting is still entrusted to the gas lights, to the oil pans, to candles and soft lights, the waiters are in costumes of the time, professional musicians go around the tables every evening entertaining the customers with Roman songs, jokes and folk songs. * SHEILA MACMILLAN DA PAI (SCOTTISH 1928 - 2018), WHITE VILLAGE, ANDALUCIA oil on canvas board 50cm x 40cm Framed and under glass Note: Sheila Macnab Macmillan was born in Glasgow in 1928. She attained a degree in Geography at Glasgow University and went on to train as a teacher. However, she had always painted and her talent was strongly encouraged by her uncle the distinguished Iain Macnab (1890 - 1967) who persuaded Sheila to come to London and train under him. Iain Macnab had been Principal at Heatherley's Art School (1925 - 1940) and then went on to be founding Principal of the hugely influential Grosvenor School of Modern Art. Sheila's London influences and Glasgow School foundations evolved into a distinctive and individual style. She usually worked "en plein air" and her work is semi abstract. She focused mainly on landscape where her training as a geographer, allowed her to use her understanding of land formation, the delicate balance of the seasons and the interaction between Man and the environment. Her uncle's concept of "rhythm" is evident in Sheila's work and remained a constant throughout her career. She painted in Scotland, Spain. France and Italy and exhibited widely especially in Glasgow, Edinburgh, London and Newcastle. Her work appeared frequently at the Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Glasgow Institute, Paisley Art Institute annual exhibitions and at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition (London). She won numerous awards and prizes over a long and distinguished career.

A HEAVILY CAST BRONZE CENSER, QING DYNASTY China, late 17th-19th century. The compressed globular body rising from a short spreading foot to an everted rim, set at the shoulder with a pair of loop handles. The underside with a seal mark cast in low relief within a horizontal, rectangular reserve, reading: “da Qing Kangxi nian zhi yan tai shi shi jing zao”. Condition: The black lacquer coating is strongly worn with some areas revealing the naked bronze especially to the edges. There are areas of extensive erosion as well as dents and nicks all over, some soiling, and verdigris to the interior. Minor casting flaws. Provenance: From a British private estate.
