A fine George II bullet teapot by James Mitchell, Edinburgh 1742 - 43, Assay Master Edward Lothian, of slightly compressed spherical bullet form with finely chased border of flower head and fruiting garlands within scrolls, with upper border of flower head, scroll and shell details, the flush hinged cover with similar foliate and scroll borders and compressed bun finial, with semi fluted scroll spout and S scroll handle with acanthus leaf thumb piece and reeded border, with wooden spacers, raised on a simple stepped circular foot 14cm high 23oz Note: There has long been confusion with the attribution of the maker's marks of John Main and James Mitchelson. It is now firmly ascribed to James Mitchell whose marks, along with James Welsh, are the only maker's marks in Scotland to include a figure within the punch. It has long been debated what these figures are holding: a bag of coinage, precious metal, or tool of the craft, There seems little doubt it does signify a connection with the craft and trade. The maker's mark struck to this piece is a particularly clear example of this mark which is often seen badly or mis- struck
