A rare Worcester teabowl, circa 1756, and its prototype Chinese saucer, Yongzheng, circa 1723-35Thinly potted and finely painted in famille rose style with an extensive mountainous Chinese river landscape, a bridge linking to a fenced compound containing a kiln-like structure, two figures in the foreground, one on horseback and the other on foot carrying packages slung from a rod across his shoulders, huts on high stilts behind them, a figure in a sampan and pagodas in the distance, the inner rim with a puce diaper border reserved with panels of gilt florets, 8cm high, the saucer delicately enamelled with an identical scene in Yongzheng painterly taste, 11.6cm diam (2)Footnotes:Many Worcester patterns of this period were adapted from Chinese originals. The design of the teabowl in the present lot is exceptional in its use of depth and perspective, closely following that of the Chinese saucer, suggesting that it could have been made as a replacement or matching for an earlier Chinese tea service. Another Worcester teabowl combined with a Chinese saucer in this pattern from the H Rissick Marshall Collection is in the Ashmolean Museum and a Worcester teapot is in the Victoria and Albert Museum (inv. no.C.74-1946).
