An early Worcester teapot and cover, circa 1754-55Of octagonal form with a fine loop handle and straight spout, moulded with two lobed panels, painted in blue with the 'Captive Bird' pattern (BFS I.A.33), a Chinese figure standing on a riverbank holding a bird tethered to a string, the reverse with a fisherman by a pavilion, floral garlands and flying insects below the diaper and foliate panelled border, the cover similarly moulded and painted with miniaturised versions of the pattern, 12.5cm high, corresponding TF workman's marks (2)Footnotes:This rare pattern is found on creamboats as well as teapots. It is therefore interesting to note that the two dividing 'supports' in the moulding of the lobed panels differs on each side of this teapot, a feature noted on many early creamboats made at Worcester. The blue and white versions of this teapot shape at Worcester are rarer than those painted in overglaze enamels. See Simon Spero, Lund's Bristol and Early Worcester Porcelain (2006), for an example of each type from the A J Smith Collection, p.108, pl.29 (blue and white) and p.177, pl.85 (polychrome). For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
A large Worcester teapot and cover, circa 1754-55The generous globular shape with cruciform panel moulding, the domed cover with an onion-shaped finial, painted in dark blue with the 'Prunus Fence' pattern (I.D.16), with oriental plants growing from gnarled roots and a small, stylised fence, the all-over design repeated on the reverse, the cover with a single trailing prunus branch and an insect, 16.5cm high, TF workman's mark on the base and IH or JH on the cover (2)Footnotes:ProvenanceGeoffrey Godden Collection, Bonhams, 30 June 2010, lot 65Illustrated by Geoffrey Godden, English Blue and White Porcelain (2004), p.162, col. pl.43 and p.170, pl.209. Several different versions of moulded lobed teapots were made at Worcester early in the 1750s, of which this is a particularly rare size raised on a most unusual high footrim. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
