Christopher Dresser - An important and rare prototype electroplated teapot - believed to be one of six prototypes made by James Dixon & Sons in 1879 and considered too eccentric and advanced for production. The unusual Oriental design can be attributed to Dresser's three month visit to Japan in 1876. This accounts for the Japanese aesthetic influence of the teapot's low drum-shaped body, which has a hinged front cover, simple angular spout and elongated ebony handle, with angular mounts raised on six peg feet. The base signed - 'C. Dresser' in cartouche, pattern no. 2275 and James Dixon & Sons electroplated hallmarks (some damage - see condition report), 11.75cm high x 20cm wide (compressed) x 11.8cm diameter CONDITION REPORT Overall body is scratched and has surface nicks and minor dents. Silver plate is worn in places. Body is distorted where spout has been pushed in and hinged cover will not close. Spout has some surface damage. Base has also been pushed in and all feet are distorted. Bottom seam is split above foot to right hand side of spout.
