George III silver teapot with later embossed decoration, bird's head spout, with ivory handle on round foot, by William Fountain, London, 1816, gross weight 26.2oz, 816g,Provenance; By direct family descent from the family of John Julias Angerstein 1732 or 35-1823 to the present owner. The merchant and philanthropist John Julius Angerstein was born in St Petersburg to a German family who had settled in Russia. He emigrated to England in about 1749 and later helped to develop LloydÉs as a great insurance house, becoming its chairman between 1790 and 1796. His impressive art collection was bought by the nation after his death and became the nucleus of the collection of the new National Gallery. during his life he held a prominent position in Society and numbered amongst his friends King George III, William Pitt the Younger.
