Lot 11

Some minor old repairs. Some sun fading overall, particularly to the base. The colour should easily be improved with careful waxing. The handles appear original, the lock is a 20th century replacement. The key is present. The escutcheon is a period replacement as some small nail marks adjacent suggest a larger escutcheon was previously in place.  The gilding to the immediate edge to the mirror is largely lost/worn away. There is also wear to the cat gas so that would have been beneath the gilding. The mirror plate has significant age and is likely original although we cannot guarantee this. There is the expected depletion to the mirror plate in the form of spots of loss, depletion to silvering (see images) The rear panel to the mirror plate is original. It bears some movement due to age. There is a small old iron bracket to the reverse of the mirror hame, to the upper left corner (see image). The feet are possibly associated. Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition Condition Report Disclaimer

The current set are of the period, they are very high quality and retain much of their gilding. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster& London, 1730 - 1840, Antique Collectors Club, 2008, Volume II, pages 11 & 12. John Frederick Sackville, 3rd Duke and 9th Earl of Dorset ordered one of the illustrated commodes from the firm's Oxford Street premises. The illustrated examples do not have lids or covers to the divisions as the current example being offered does, however a drawn plan clearly including covers for all appropriate divisions and 'Boxes' dated 1781 is illustrated on page 10 ( ibid.) The chest almost certainly supplied to John Frederick Sackville by Gillows was sold by Christie's, Important English Furniture & Carpets, 9th June 2005, Lot 279, (£33,600). Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Some old splits and chips. Ratchet adjustable mirror to centre of fitted drawer no longer present. Leather to slide of fitted drawer sympathetically replaced. Lock to the fitted drawer is a replacement. There are section of replacement timber adjacent to it from where it was replaced. All other metalware appears original. Later fabric applied over backboards. It has stains and discolourations. Later supporting blocks to backs of feet. Two small sections of replacement veneer to top. Some small old veneer repairs with sections of replacement veneer and filler used in places. Darker ring mark to one side of the top. Some shallow indents to one side of the front edge of the top. Lot 264

After Clodion (French, 1738-1814), a fine and large French patinated bronze mythological group, the Triumph of Bacchus, late 19th century, with two dancing maidens raising an infant Bacchus on their shoulders, one wielding a thyrsus, the other a tambourine, the circular naturalistically cast socle inscribed Clodion to the maquette, on a further canted square section base, 85cm high overallCondition Report: The bronze bears the usual minor marks, knocks and scuffs overall consistent with age.The patina is a warm chocolate brown overall. The surface is relatively glossy and even, aside from a handful of areas particularly to the upper bodies and arms of the maidens and the infant's back where there are traces of darker and coarser surface coating, probably a lacquer. Aside from this and a small number of tiny casting inconsistencies including an aperture to the base of circa 0.2cm, commensurate with the manufacturing process, and some scratching to the bracket feet, the bronze is in perfectly presentable condition overall. Old chips, splits and some small losses. Metalware replaced except for the the central small hidden drawers to the interior which retain their original gilded handles. A pair of French gilt bronze, patinated bronze and white marble mounted figural four light candelabra, by Emile Colin & Cie, Paris, late 19th century, in Louis XV taste, each modelled with a draped amorino holding aloft four scrolled candle branches terminating in flowerhead sconces, standing on circular plinths with writhen and imbricated laurel rims, above further square bases on foliate bracket feet, the plinths impressed E. COLIN & CIE PARIS, approximately 51cm highÉmile Colin ran his prolific workshop at 29, rue de Sévigné, Paris, from 1882 until his death in 1899. The foundry produced fine decorative works of art such as the present candelabra, but also cast bronzes for sculptors such as Rozet, Messagé, Germain and Marioton. After Colin's death in 1899, the firm obtained the Grand Prix at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1900.Condition Report: Minor marks, knocks and scuffs overall commensurate with age and use, and the gilding is a little rubbed and slightly spotted mainly to the sconces.Two interior sconce liners are missing. One flowerhead has broken off, though it is sold with the lot.One or two branches are a little bent.Each of the marble bases has a small chip, and some further nibbling. A George III mahogany clothes press, circa 1770, in the manner of Thomas Chippendale, the dentil moulded cornice above a pair of panel doors cornered by roundels, opening to five sliding trays, each covered in original marbled paper, the lower section with two short and three long graduated drawers, on bracket feet, 188cm high, 120cm wide, 63cm deepSeveral of the features demonstrated by this press relate closely to those demonstrated by pieces known to have been produced by the workshop of Thomas Chippendale. This includes the red 'wash' applied to the panels to the underside of the press. The paper lining to the interiors of trays is also a feature associated with Chippendale. Please note, there is no red wash to the rear panels and the supports to the feet are not laminated.  Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Some old splits and chips. Exceptional figuring to timber. Excellent colour and patina. Marbled paper lining to slides could well be original but we cannot guarantee this. The locks and handles all appears original with the exception probably of the small handle to an upper corner of each side cupboard door of the base. These look to have been introduced to the centre of the original roundel terminals (see images). A key is present to operate the locks to the astragal glazed doors only. Some locks may require minor adjustment to operate entirely smoothly. One lock to the lower doors is engaged. If the buyer contacts the department prior to collection, it may be possible for a key to the lower doors to be located. Above each lock escutcheon to the doors there is a small single filled hole, likely where a small loop handle has previously been located. The sliding trays to the interiors of the lower cupboards are all likely later in date but have been very well made by a cabinetmaker. The runners that support them in position are also later. The holes to the interior side panels to support pegs for the original shelves remain visible. Much of the glass has possibly been replaced as there is evidence of later putty to the reverse edges (some is untidy). There are no cracks or breaks to the glass. As often seen with library bookcases, there are areas of indentation / scratching where two adjacent doors are opened and the key or engaged lock of one knocks into the frame of the other door (see images)The shelves to the bookcase section throughout (all glazed sections) appear original. An early 19th century figured mahogany box and ebony strung linen press, the upper section with hanging rail and one tray enclosed two doors with inlaid oval paterae over two short and two long graduated drawers, on splay bracket supports, 49" wide x 21" deep x 80" high Condition: Minor losses/lift to veneer, Minor nibbles around sides, Minor splits in the drawers, restoration to right front support, handles not original, all locks present, losses to top left of cornice, minor wear and tewar commensurate with age.
