A near pair of 18th century Anglo-Chinese huanghuali and padouk bureau cabinets, each with a moulded cornice above a pair of panelled doors with leaf carved mouldings, enclosing two adjustable shelves and two drawers, above a hinged fall revealing an arrangement of drawers and pigeonholes with a central cupboard door, above four long graduated drawers, on bracket feet, with paktong escutcheons, hinges and handles, 188.2cm high, 109cm wide, 55.7cm deep and 188.2cm high, 109cm wide, 57.2cm deep. (2) Provenance: Purchased by the current vendor's husband from Sotheby's, December 1980. Catalogued as: 'Property of a Gentleman, A rare pair of Padouk bureau bookcases, probably Macau, early 19th century.' These fine bureau cabinets were constructed in China, probably Canton or Macau for an English client possibly ordered for an East India Company official. They are made of huanghuali and padouk both timbers native to Asia. Huanghuali (Dalbergia odorifera) literally translates as 'yellow flowering pear' wood which is a member of the rosewood family. It was predominately found on the island of Hainan and was the wood of choice for the Emperor and the elite during the Ming and Qing dynasties. These cabinets are based on an English prototype but constructed in an entirely Chinese way, in-particularly with the use of solid timbers.
A George III mahogany bracket clock by James Muckarsie of Holborn, the eight day brass repeating movement with a verge escapement striking on a bell, the backplate engraved with a basket of flowers and scrolling leaves, the arched brass dial with a silvered chapter ring, with Roman and Arabic numerals, with a matted centre with a date aperture and a signature plaque, inscribed 'JAMES MUCKARSIE HOLBORN', the arch with a strike / silent dial and with gilt Rococo spandrels, the bell top case with foliate urn finials and with flower and female mask mounts and fish-scale panel sides, with brass carrying handles, 59cm high. Provenance: Kilmory Castle, Argyle and Bute, Scotland. The estate of the late Sir John Alexander Campbell-Orde, 6th Baronet (1943-2016). James Muckarsie (Mackarsie) is listed as working in London (47 High Holborn), a member of the Clockmakers' Company in 1784. He died in 1801. His son, George James Muckarsie, was a clock and chronometer maker working in Great Queen Street, London.

A William IV ebonised chiming bracket clock by Thomas Hunt of London, the three train brass movement striking on nine bells, the backplate stamped 'THOS HUNT Tottenham Court Road LONDON', the painted arched dial with Roman numerals and a subsidiary date and strike / silent dials, signed 'TH. HUNT LONDON', the case inlaid with brass, with cone finials and Gothic lancet shape side panels, 64cm high.
