A late 18th century mahogany writing bureau; the cleated angular fall opening to reveal fitted interior with central cupboard door, secret drawer, pigeonholes and further smaller drawers etc., all over four full-width graduated drawers probably retaining original brass swan-neck handles, raised on high bracket feet, 100cm wide
A fine Chippendale period mahogany chest-on-chest; the outset cornice with a Greek key design above an arrangement of two half-width over six full-width graduated drawers flanked by canted blind fret corners; raised on high ogee bracket feet, the chest retaining its original brass swan-neck handles, together with copy invoice from Edward A. Nowell (BADA) for £5,900, 112cm wide x 55cm (deepest) x 183.5cm high CONDITION REPORT: The linings of the drawers are mahogany and the front of the drawers are also mahogany. Condition generally quite good, it's had some re-polishing at some stage. There are some vertical veneer splits to the frieze under the dentil cornice commensurate with age. The handles look original, the right hand side of the top where the top meets the base section has some restoration. Condition generally reasonable but it has had some re-polishing and there is some evidence of fading to some of it. The right hand side has approx. 10/12cm split running from the return moulding into the piece which has been repaired historically. Overall the piece is in quite good saleable order commensurate with age. There is some scuffing and marks to the periphery of the pronounced ogee bracket feet. See images.
A very fine late 19th/early 20th century serpentine-fronted mahogany, boxwood strung and satinwood compactum of large proportions; the broken swan-neck pediment above an arcaded frieze and two satinwood panelled and crossbanded doors opening to reveal original slides above a central green key fret band and three graduated drawers with brass swan-neck handles, further flanked by two panelled concave doors enclosing hanging space; raised on French-style slightly splaying bracket feet; 226cm high x 238cm wide x 67cm (deepest point at front) CONDITION REPORT: The left hand back panel is split considerably vertically. There are scratches and losses generally commensurate with age. Some scratching and veneer loss to the three bow fronted drawers sited centrally. The doors generally appear to be in good original condition although there is minor evidence of “some” bowing and shrinkage through age. Some veneers have discoloured slightly where they may have been prepped by a restorer for restoration. All of the original locks are present and the handles look original. In our view there would be a certain amount of restoration work required to bring the piece up to showroom/gallery saleable condition. The polish looks reasonable and original. The interior depth in the end sections is approx. 41cm deep although as the door is concave on the right hand side of the door this increases to 51cm. Where the polish was originally applied in some areas you can see that this has dried out and you can see the flecks of the grain as is usual in late 19th/early 20th Century mahogany furniture.
A late 18th century mahogany chest-on-chest; the outset cornice above an arrangement of two half-width and three full-width drawers; the upper section with canted fluted corners; raised on bracket feet; 110cm wide x 190cm high CONDITION REPORT: The upper section is darker than the lower section which looks faded. The escutcheons appear to have been replaced although the handles may be original as no evidence of no further holes are to be found. The piece obviously has had a re-polish at some stage and could do with another good re-polish. There is scuffing and scratching and minor veneers away to the bracket feet. There is some minor historic splitting to the sides which could be filled with wax. Some of the internal locks are now missing and the drawer linings are pine running from front to back. There is a split on the left hand side of the second full width drawer on the upper section just to the right of the canted fluted corners which is split approx. 5/6cm high and there are veneers away where the lower drawer on the top section meets the bottom section moulding. Further scuffs, scratches and marks etc., commensurate with age.
A late-18th century mahogany chest-on-chest; the dentil cornice above a high frieze, two half-width and six full-width graduated drawers with pierced brass handles; Anglesey kite-shaped escutcheons and raised on high bracket feet, 111cm wide x 196cm high CONDITION REPORT: This has been re-polished at some stage in our opinion not too well, looking at it from the left hand side there is full vertical splits to the side panels although the top split could be where the two panels are coming away but there are other vertical indentations. Looking at the front elevation there is some scratching and scuffing commensurate with age. The drawers appear to have been pine lined and there is some historic woodworm to the pine and there is a small 2/3cm section to the top of one of the pine drawers on the left hand side which is now away through worm erosion. The locks all appear to be in place and looking at the right hand side there are what look like splits but may be where the two panels are parting where they have shrunk and across the grain through age. The dentil cornice appears to be made of oak rather than mahogany and there are several small pieces of veneer that have been replaced some time ago. The very bottom drawer has a repair to the lower left hand side where the ovolo moulding is present approx. 3cm piece has been replaced at some stage.
