Lot 423

A late-Victorian silver novelty figural cruet set, by E. C. Brown, London 1880, with a central pull-out pepper pot probably modelled as Mr Jorrocks, on a rectangular base, with two flush hinged compartments, on four bracket feet, length 12.5cm, height 13.5cm, approx. weight 14oz. John Jorrocks Esq. was a comic sporting cockney grocer created by Robert Smith Surtees in 1838 who appeared in Jorrocks' Jaunts and Jollities in the New Sporting Magazine. Surtees was a passionate devotee of hunting and shooting, and wrote extensively about the subject. He created many other comic sporting personalities, but John Jorrocks was his most popular. The character Stalky in Rudyard Kipling's Stalky & Co, is considered to have been influenced by Surtees' work. A similar pair were offered in these Salerooms on the 29 April 2015, lot 594. They were inscribed 'John Jorrocks Esq. M.F.H,' 'He lectures on 'unting' , the other inscribed 'Thinks he will shoot doleful'.

The arms are that of Hyde quartering Denton, Stockwith, Eastfield or Lefevre.

A rare and important late 17th / early 18th Century ebonised bracket clock by Francis Robinson of London. The exquisite case having central glazed door with fret pierced spandrels to corners and panels to sides. Stepped top with turned brass swing handles and ormolu acorn finial top. The ormolu brass dial having a silvered Roman numeral chapter ring with faceted hands. Front pendulum over signed makers name with day aperture and separate seconds dial above. The rear having a second glazed door opening to reveal a large gilded vergee movement decorated with scrolls. The clock striking on multiple bells and music cylinder plastering Britain Strike Home and The King. Measures 50cm x 29cm x 20cm.

Jaeger Lecoultre - Atmos - An original vintage Mid 20th Century iconic atmos bracket mantel clock Ser No. 125053. Raised on a gilt brass base with square white enamel dial with open skeleton movement having gilt baton and arabic numerals. Bevelled glass lift off case with outer ebonised wood and glass display case. Great example. Measures: 23cm x 21cm x 16cm excluding outer display case.

An unusual 19th Century Florentine ebonised  and gilt parcel pietra dura inlaid corner cabinet.  The stunning cabinet raised on bracket feet with double door cabinet beneath single door cabinet above.  Gilt parcel embellished details with carved frieze above, the central upper door with stunning inlaid Pietra Dura song bird within scroll work. Flanked by futher Pietra Dura and glass work insets of fruits. Measures 128cms x 85cms x 52cms.  Comes with provenance of the cabinet being from the Capel Cure family of Overdeben, Woodbridge Suffolk where this lot is mentioned in a hand written inventory dated 20th June 1935 on page 2 as '1 Florentine Corner Cabinet with carved and gilt enrichment.127cms high x 85cms wide x 58cms  x 58cms at the back return edges

The central glazed door in front of a stunning cobalt and white enamel cartouche panel Roman numeral chapter ring with cross faceted metal hands. Gilded face with twin musician makers plaque to front. The tortoiseshell marquetry and metal inlay adorning the case with scrolled acanthus leaf mounts and face masks. Glazed panels to sides revealing movement. The pediment decorated with four flame and four unr finials. The brass wheel movement stamped 236 and striking on a bell. With pendulum. A fantastic example. Measures: 46cm.
